This month we will be discussing Walter Mosley's What Next: A Memoir Toward World Peace. http://thumperscorner.com/Reading_List.htm Walter's book discusses the 911, but brings our African-American sensibilities to the table. People often wonder why many African-Americans might not be so gun happy about going to war, and are almost sympatheic to the so called enemy. America has the hubris to behave is if it can not understand how anyone can hate her?! Is is so willing to bring to bear the greatest military might in recorded history onto a country woefully unsuited to do anything about it. I think the danger that we face being so cynical (I believe legitamately so) about America's intentions in the Middle East is that if Bush and the boys are even half right about, who was behind 911 terrorist atttacks, our lack of support, protests, etc could be our own undoing. So when the wealthy rule this is what you get. Our kids risking and losing their lives over something they will never understand, but their's is not to reason why... Also read Paige Turner's review of What Next if you haven't already http://reviews.aalbc.com/whatnext.htm This should be an interesting chat.

Hello Troy, I went to see Walter Mosley speak last night for the Indpls Marion County Library's Meet The Artist program. I had a wonderful time. He read from his latest book What Next. I can't say that I agree with all of his assessments, but I did see where he was coming from with a number of them. He did hit on one point that I'm in complete agreement with, the Middle East situation. Listen, it's all about the benjamins...who stands to get the most money from the US going to war with Iraq. That's all. If Bush and the rest of his croonies was really concerned about America's future and well being, the first thing that he would do, as the other presidents since Jimmy Carter SHOULD have done was decrease America's dependency on oil. I'm sorry but the writing has been on the wall for over 30 years now. There haven't been a single politician that has advocated the usage of alternative energy. No, we are vulnerable. When America can't even raise the majority of its food, we are vulnerable. Because at any moment now, those who supply us with our ESSENTIALS can take it away and then where are we at...fighting over stuff that don't even belong to us, because we have gotten too fat, too lazy, and frankly, too trifling to take care of ourselves. Now, peep this, its the same situation with rich people. For many, I dare say, if the restaurants all closed up, and the cooks, and maids all left...how in the hell would they EAT? How many times do America have to get a lesson before we learn it? There was a reason why white folks fought for us to stay slaves, who in the hell else was going to come and pick the cotton, feed 'em and be raped by 'em for nothing? They couldn't do the basic thing for they're survival, couldn't reinstate slavery, so here come Jim Crow and all of those other sick ass laws, written and unwritten, to keep somebody, anybody, subserviant to them because they couldn't do for themselves. So here we are. While Dum Dum is selling wolf tickets, he need to be finding ol' bin laden and give him and any of his associates a natural, done-stole-sumpin, red headed stepchild beat down. He can't find him to do it? Why not? All of those weapons, missiles and satellites my tax dollars have bought for the last 20 years and you can't find one man!!?! Geez us B A Fence!! For all I know, there's probably money at the bottom of that too! No, I'm not falling for the hype. |

Thumper, Preach on brother! You are especially right on US dependence on foreign oil. We have had more than 30 years to develop alternatives, yet what is the most popular automobile in 2003? The gas guzzling SUV. YOu and I may not be falling for the hype, but unfortunately a large majority is. Our world seems to be headed for more hard times with a lot of unnecessary suffering. Like Marvin says, "Makes me wanna holler!" |
