I listen to a lot of different artist: Erykah, Me'shell, Jill Scott, Zap Mama, Chico Debarge, Parliment, OutKast,Sinead O'Conner, Dead Prez, Fela Kuti, Goapele, Bilal,The Cure, old U2,Jay-Z, Marvin Gaye, The Phat Cat Players,Sade, Isley Brothers,Cameo, Alexande O'Neal, Alicia,.... I could go on and on. Fantasia does have a poweful voice, but she is not a GREAT artist, period. Maybe it's the production and poor lyrics on her album that detract from her. The Baby Mama song was\is awful! I live in Florida and she gets play here, but every time she comes on the radio i turn the station. "Truth Is" is the only song by her that i like. Me not liking her as an artist has nothing to do with how she looks. I love me some dark skinned women, pleas believe it!! But Fantasia sucks. I'm sorry but its true. She is not as talanted as Erykah Badu, not even close. Why does Alicia get bashed by some sistas? Fantasia sings that's it. Alicia writes, plays the piano, and sings. I'm not a major Alicia fan but dagg give her a break. Stop hatin. Should Fantasia be bigger than she is? Maybe.Does she deserve to be supported because she's a dark skinned, hell no. |

My person opinion ---and opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one--- is that Alicia Key's music is CONTRIVED, not fully emanating from her---but rather a copy of 1960's Bossa Nova, Marvin Gaye, Power Soul and Warwick chic. She hasn't done a single piece of work yet that defines HER---it's all somebody else's sound from the old days so far. And when she gets 5 Grammys and an artist like India Arie, who also writes, produces, plays and sings and is far more distinctive and talented gets ZILCH....it's clear to people WHY....and the reason it's clear is because they live in this world and have eyes and ears. I completely disagree with you about FANTASIA. I think she's the very best female singer we have right now. And like an old school singer---she can get up and perform ANYWHERE and is on key, hits notes BETTER Than she does on the CD and is a very lively, purist type of performer. She doesn't have the sex appeal and beauty of Erykah Badu or Lauryn Hill or even Brandy (all dark skinned women)...but she has a LOT of comical personality and I love her CD. I listen to it non-stop. |

Ratiationx, I agree Fantasia, though talented, has a LONG way to go to be included amongst many of those you listed (though the Chico DeBarge inclusion causes me to chuckle...Hehe!). And, yes, there are some problems with the writing/production/arrangement/engineering on her inaugural album. Though, frankly, she's HARDLY unique in THAT regard. I'm rooting for her to smartly/earnestly produce a better 2nd album. But with so many OTHER factors involved in making/marketing popular music, Fantasia, alas, might be amongst the LEAST influential factors of what released in her name. The Alicia Keyes comparison is intriguing. Because while Keys' appears to be more diversely talented, I think I enjoy Fantasia's VOICE more. Honestly, there seems a 'roughness' within her singing that gives me the impression that Alicia is still LEARNING to sing. While I think Fantasia is further along in that regard. I hope that both Alicia and Fantasia are judged and marketed on the basis of their TALENT and SKILL, not upon how they look. Of course that's a pipedream. But that's truly what I HOPE. |

And one more thing....I am a Baby's Mama and I love that song!!!! I think it's great. And it ANNOYS me that with all the Hip Hop SONGS that degrade and put down black women on a constant.... ....people have the nerve to jump up and complain about one measley woman's song. Totally ignoring all the DOZENS and DOZENS of "black bitches aint shit" comments contained in Rap and Hip Hop CUTZ that we've been innundated with from Point Zero.

Kola, I concur with EVERYTHING you say about Alicia. STILL, I think she does have enough REAL talent that if she could get away from all the fakery that surrounds her and produce music that's true to HER heart/spirit, she might actually evolve into a splendid artist. Funny. I'm actually more 'turn-on' by Fantasia than I am by (the VASTLY overrated/exposed) Brandy. JEEZ! If you're talking about "contrived", you're talking about BRANDY! But, yeah, Hill and Badu will...DO!!! RUFF!!RUFF!!RUFF!! |

RAD, that's good that you "loves you some dark skin womens"---because in order to truly love Black People, you must first love the womb from which the African diaspora comes--the dark skinned woman.

RadiationX be advised that any opinion you express on this board will immediately be pounced upon by the Kolabm unit. Bennifer and Brangelina have nothing on this ubiquitous twosome. LOL. Fortunately you sound like you have a good sense of perspective. Alexander O'Neil! Wow! Hearing that name takes me back to the 1980s Prince era and the Minnneapolis sound. Now that I think about it, I did use to like him. Me, I'm of the opinion that if Alicia Keyes looked like Fantasia and Fantasia looked like Alicia Keyes, what was said about them in this thread would - shall we say - take on a different "complexion." heh-heh |

Observe that pattern, Kolabm. Maybe you should investigate the benefits of a colonic because your mentality alternates between constipation and diarrhea. |

Cynique, The ONLY thing about you that makes me "mad" is that someone who don't know any better might actually believe some of the bullshit you post. I admit, THAT bothers the $#*+ outtah me. Other than that, I mostly laugh at your posts. Because you're just a conveniently pathetic source of mirth to me. |

Cynique, Oh. So is this the part where you've FINALLY determined you can't defend yourself and now must solicit the aid of others. Including even...KOLA? HAHAHA!!! Cynique. I am FAR too skilled and arrogant to require ANYONE to come to my defense. Frankly, I'd consider such an affront. I say what I mean and mean what I say...SPLENDIDLY. If I am proven right, Great. If I am proven wrong, GREATER. But I'd NEVER lower myself to pleading the intellectual "defense" of anyone. I leave such self-deprecation to people who need it. I leave THAT to people like YOU. |

I agree that India.Arie was ripped off at the grammys. Her music deserved a grammy. I also agree that Alicia does not have an aura about her that Jill Scott or Badu has, but the latter two artist to me are in a different genre than Alicia. Alicia is Pop-RnB, Scott and Badu among others are more cerebral. |

Alicia Keys and Fantasia are both good in my opinion. It's hard comparing the two of them. I mean I like one or two songs from Alicia and the same thing goes for Fantasia. Although, I think Fantasia has a stronger voice compared to Alicia and it maybe because Alicia has to play the piano and handle voice at the same time. There was no need to mention color.. voice has nothing to do with wether the girl is light or dark. Fantasia is a strong and dedicated young lady just like Simon mentioned on Oprah;) I've also thought about comparing Kelly Clerkson with Fantasia, but that's hard to do since Kelly has turned into a rock star while Fantasia remains r&b. But I think they're both talented for today's music.. they're both good role models for children too I think. |

I need some help. I watched a movie last night but i didn't catch the title. The movie was about an Nigerian man living in France i believe. He was an illegal alien, also there was a white woman who was also an illegal. To gain a visa to the States she was going to sell one of her organs on the black market. But in the end the Nigerian man and the white women tricked the organ dealer by operating on him an selling his kidney or whatever it was. The actor who played the Nigerian man has a scar on his forehead in real life and also in this movie. Anyone know the title of this movie? |

Generally, I think the music business is fueled by physical appearance, sex, and money--not TALENT. Look at Brittany Spears--she SUCKS, but her 'look' appeals to the masses. I could mention 10 to 20 mainstream "entertainers" that fit that mold. When it comes to Fantasia, I don't particularly think she is a good singer--she whines. I think her skin tone is amazing, but I don't find her face particularly pretty. Now, I look at artists like Lauryn Hill, who I think is amazingly beautiful--skin tone, facial tones and build, but she, now that her music is on a much deeper level, isn't getting air time. I think Jill Scott is also incredible--music to looks. I think she is more poplular than Fantasia, but nevertheless, she doesn't get as much acknowledgement for her talent as I think she deserves. I really, really like India's music. I happen to think she is very pretty, however, not only does her 'look' not appeal to the masses, but her music is also much too deep for that average, shallow American. Alicia Keyes, while I think she is very pretty as well and also extremely talented, her sound is really pushed by "the industry". However, I have to give it to her, her voice IS nice and the girl is a true musician--she can actually play an instrument and WRITE lyrics (I have her poetry book). Erykah Badu--she is just baaaadddddd! I really like her music and her fearlessness. She doesn't give a shyt what anyone thinks. Too bad she and Common split. I like his sound, and he is very attractive to me--oh well. She eats well and takes care of herself--something I really respect. All in all, I think Fantasia will stick around for awhile. She'll proably be able to have an alright career. I do wish her well. She seems geniune.

The thing I find most admirable about Fantasia and Alicia is what comes through in their interviews. They both are very grounded. Alicia seems perfectly aware that her instant success can be contributed to a marketing frenzy and she wears her humbleness well. Fantasia is self-deprecating and very down to earth. I get the feeling that winning isn't everything to her. |
