This photo was taken a BEA in New York William Cox (Editor-in-Chief Black Issues Book Review), Troy Johnson (Founder AALBC.com), Iman (Model, Actress - this Somalian sister is 50 next month) Here are a few more shots http://events.aalbc.com/bea2005photos.htm They were all taken with a cell phone camera so the quality is not great, but I'd rather have this Iman shot than nothing. Videos are coming...

Yeah, I love IMAN...and I asked you on the other board if you had mentioned me to her....and if so, what did she say? That's great about the video and of course we'll do one when I DO finally make it to New York. TROY... I believe this is the first time you've posted on my board. It's about time.

She played "Thelma" on the TV show "Amen" with Clifton Davis and Sherman Hemsley. I couldn't stand that character. |

Ladies, Ditto me as well. That was a HORRIBLE characterization of Black women. I'm not the type that says it should have been preempted from viewing. But i NEVER watch that show LARGELY because of her. Plus. I've never gotten over those '70's rumors that alleged Michael Jackson was going to have a sexchange operation so he could marry Clifton Davis. I've always been pretty 'suspicious' about Rev. Davis since THAT. |

Oh give Anna Mae a break. She's come a long way since "Amen," and, in fact, just did a very credible guest shot on the new hit TV series "Grey's Anatomy." (And how can anybody bad mouth the actress who played Ice Cube's very "together" mother in all of the "Friday" movies??) |

Cynique, that's just it. I always appreciated the *actress*; she had a thankless job. It was the *character* that I had no use for. Good for her, for moving onward and upward. |

You're right Cynique. I really enjoy/love Anna as an actress. I was only commenting on that one t.v. series. But I did love Anna as Janet Jackson's mother in the film "Nutty Professor 2".....and I loved her in the "Friday" films and some other parts she's played.

Anna Mae (Bullock)=Tina Turner (Uh, can TT give a sistah the devil's number? I want him to hook ME up like THAT when I'm 60+. But seriously, in her case, it's just good living.) Then there's ANN-MARIE Johnson. Keenan Ivory Wayan's rail thin woman--on and offscreen--in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" and later "In Living Color" (if memory serves). What other show was she on...? Off to imdb... |

I liked her in the "Friday" films too. It was her "Amen" character I couldn't stand. I just find the whole notion of a Black woman relentlessly chasing after some pretty boy (closeted gay) preacher unseemly. That's the same reason why I loathe Monique's character in "The Parkers". |

Virgil Tibbs' (Harold Rollins) wife on "In the Heat of the Night"! And before that, Rog's wife on "What's Happening Now"! I figured it out before I got to imdb. Oh, the trivia. |

ABM: I just find the whole notion of a Black woman relentlessly chasing after some pretty boy (closeted gay) preacher unseemly. Mah: Not only that, but was I the only one that thought Thelma's relationship with her daddy The Deacon bordered on incestuous? She was a whiny mess with him, and then a overbearing near-Mammy-like figure with the Reverend. |

Actually, the vulnerable, sympathetic, Thelma-role was the anti-thesis of the over-bearing arms-crossed, eye-ball rolling, stereotypical roles reserved for so many black actresses cast as the maid in the family sit-coms back then, and for that reason I had no problem with the Thelma character. |

ABM, While I LOVE Monique----I don't watch the PARKERS for 2 reasons (1) Her character salavating over -chasing that Professor and (2) Her daughter's disgustingly DESPERATE blond hair-do and fake gray/green/blue eyes. Countess Vaughn is a BRILLIANT actress-comedienne, but she's too insecure and self-hating for me to relate to her. I do, however, really love MONIQUE's boldness, her brassiness, her down to earth ribaldness and her PASSION and PRIDE in being a "big woman". I also think she's gorgeous!

I cheer Monique on, too, Kola. The way she reps the big girls and such. But even the best of us have our off days. I saw her in some mag (S2S?) a while back, playing basketall with her son...dressed to the nines in full make-up. She looked like an overdressed bunny rabbit. It wasn't a flattering photo. She did look good in the sistah shot on the cover of Essence a couple of issues back, though. |

Mah, Guys aren’t likely to change. It's that stubborn Cro-Magnon gene. And don't front: You know you LOVE it when strange men do things that keep you up in the wee hours of the evening. Kola: "Thomas SLAPS on the butt." ABM: To clarify: A lovetap on a comely behind: Good. A slap in a comely face: Bad. Kola: "I've known men who did at my "encouraging"." ABM: Girl. You've gottah always be dominant, even when you're pretending to be submissive. Kola: "Some women like it rough SOMETIMES." ABM: Yeah. But there's just no pleasin' "some women". Because "SOMETIMES" they "like it rough". And "SOMETIMES" they call the cops. |

Kola there is a first time for everything. Kola I did not attempt to carry on a conversation with Iman actually she was overwhelmed by people (like me) trying to get a photo with her. She was very gracious. Most of the time I don't post 'cause I can;t read the entire post and I don"t want to contributre unless I can read everything. I peep in from time to time to get a sense of what is going on. My day gig, AALBC.com and other things are taking more and more of my time. I'll probably post more during the Summer months. ABM: Iman is class all the way video. Hoochie mamma, nah. But you know who is foine as hell: Crystal McCrary-Anthony. She collabrated on that book with Tonya Lewis-Lee; The Gotham Diaries. I have know idea why I did not take a photo of her. Cyrstal is absolutely stunning -- and she had two kids and the brains to get a JD. I'm with you regarding Monique. I like my women a little more pliable (physicially that is). Peace |

Troy, Thanks for the hit-up. And tell Iman I meant “hoochie mama” in the best possible light. I’ve seen the former Mrs. Greg Anthony. I agree she appear quite 'snackable'. But I guess Greg would attest to the following: "Show me a beautiful woman and I'll show you a man who's tired of having sex with her." |

ABM, I live in a secluded area. There ARE no men for me to treat mean while on menses. Thomas won't come near me until it's safe, the boys are just kids and would fall into Belly-laughs if I even pretended to get snippy with them. Plus they'd throw me in the river fully clothed. I get no pleasure from this...and I really didn't mean to attack Tonya and Cathy so viciously. Should I erase those posts?

Yes, but the industry gossips will spread it much worse than I said it... ...everyone hates me as it is. And I'll be skewed as an even BIGGER Diana Ross-type Super Bitch. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EMAILING ME ALL DAY ABOUT THE FOLLOWING: You realize I'm quite well known in Australia, right? Well a paper over there today coined a new term---"Boofhead"----a person who can't keep their emotions in check. They proclaimed Russell Crowe the first "Boofhead". Read the story: http://entertainment.news.com.au/story/0,10221,15547616-7485,00.html ABM, they're making fun of me all over the world! 38 people in London and New York emailed me to let me know that I'm not liked.

Kola, I don't see you that way. And "boofhead" is not about you: "Boofhead", a term of affection for particular male stupidity, was never really going to last beyond its resonant association and origin, with the Boofhead cartoon that first appeared in the Daily Mirror in the 1940s." Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/01/09/1073437448039.html?from=storyrhs&onecl ick=true Kola, I know this is your period talking, and you know what I'm about to tell you: You have two choices. Be loved by the world, or be true to yourself and what you do. You can't have both at the same time. Many may mock you, and a handful may truly love you. But what a blessing that handful is. In this life, that's about all you get. Love and hugs and hot tea with honey to you. (I'm sick too...a cold. I never get colds. But this one snuck up on me.) |

Thanks, Kola, and you're welcome. I'm only still up, partly out of habit, partly out of necessity. My dear daughter has been wanting to have a dinner party (a little B. Smith in training), so I told her that Moving Up Day would be a good time to do it. So we had a few family friends over, plus me and the girls and their dad. My big girl requested her favorite meal--linguine with white clam sauce--and--get this--mimosas! At the dinner she and I made for her dad's b-day last month, he and I had mimosas, and so she wanted to know if there were Kid Mimosas. Bring on the o.j. and ginger ale. Anyway, I had every intention of cleaning my kitchen. Ha! Plus in the morning I'm interviewing the author of one of the books I reviewed for the Wash. Post (one of my regular gigs requested a lengthier review and author interview after reading the Post, yea!)...and I haven't written a single question. I just figure if I lay here on the couch long enough the dishes will wash themselves and the questions will write themselves. Sigh...I wish life worked like that. |

The David Bowie thing I still don't get, though. LOL! Well, this particular "thing" has going on much longer than most celeb relationships, so whatever it is it must be alright. I notice she keeps pretty tight lipped about it. (They both seem to.) More than anything that shows how much class Iman's got. |

Kola and Mah: Sorry to hear you're both at less than 100%. I'm up way past my bedtime cause I just woke up from a 4 hour "nap"--I was so tired after returning from a big family reunion vacation. I'll go in the kitchen now, make us all some tea w/just a nip of gin in it... |

Mahogany, I KNOW how you feel. LOL And Yvette, that tea sounds scrumptious. Gee. I believe...that I'm just jealous that everyone calls IMAN "classy" and those other two women "smart/beautiful/foine/writers" and Kola...."a psycho bitch". I'm not talking about you guys. I'm talking about the industry and "book people" who just can't seem to understand me. I'm just TOO MUCH for people to "get". And I feel that I should just disappear and go away. I just don't fit in. Like Cynique used to say, "I'm an OUT OF CONTROL personality"----and I don't have any education. I'm just wild and evil and NAKED and I don't know how to be what people want me to be. Anyway---starting next week, the largest TalkRadio station in L.A. 90.7 FM is giving away my books as PRIZES during their Pledge Drive. It's a really popular WHITE LIBERAL station, so it's a big deal. I try to think of bright spots like that. |

Mah, Funny. I've been nursing a tuff cold myself. And like you, I seldom get'em (probably 1 every 2-3 years). I'll let you, 'Vette and the rest of the ladies concoct some menses remedies for Kola. But that's some very sage advice you gave Kola. She'd be wise to observe it. Hope your kid's Move Up Day dinner is a Blast. 'Vette, You're right. I shouldn't hate on Bowie. Just that I used to have a crush on Iman and the thought of his touching... Hey. If she likes it, I guess it's jake with me. Kola, Life's about the ebbs and the flows, Babe. The ebbs and flows. |

Thanks, ABM. I'm feeling better this morning. Now of course, I've got BOTH girls home all day long...gotta keep my resistance built up! ;-) Interview went well this morning, esp. considering how I was still prepping my questions 3 minutes before our scheduled time. The author was great. I felt like I was still kind of in a cold fog, though. Good thing I recorded the whole thing to revisit when I'm feeling 100%! How are you this morning, Kola? Hope everyone has a great day!

ABM, yeah, don't hate: Ziggy threw a li'l of his stardust on a sister I guess! And no telling what she "threw" his way. And Kola--now you know you'd be T'd OFF if folks started calling you "classy." Isn't that a little boring? Bougie? "Imitation white woman"? You say you may be "out of control"--But isn't there a fine line between "being in control" and "being controlled"? I know what you said was likely hormones talking anyway. (I hope.) ABM, I unfortunately do not have any remedies. Besides herbal tea, warm baths, exercise, orgasms, ibuprofin (spl?), and just the passage of time, I guess, no big secrets to pass along. Mahogany: When and where will your interview be coming out? Which author from the Post review was it with? I am thinking about setting up a web "conversation" about diversity in adoption. There are all sorts of issues that I do not think get enough exposure in adoption research--like Black middle class families and "stranger" (non kinship) adoption generally, divorce after adoption, Black gay parenting and adoption, adoptees becoming adoptive parents, etc. There is a blogger who I read--a Black gay man who adopted an African American boy with his White husband--who has interesting perspectives, and I also recently heard a presentation at a conference by a biracial, transracially adopted woman who is in the process of adopting her neices and nephews. Anyway, would you be interested in participating in a conversation with folks like this? I don't even know what format I'd try to work on. Not to mention where I'm supposed to find the time. (ANYTHING to avoid working on my dissertation this summer, I guess!) But I am in part being selfish--trying to see where my current interests in this topic may lead in terms of future employment, etc. |

'Vette: The interview was with Richard Louv, author of "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder." I am writing a lengthier, more personal review of the book (in addition to the interview) at the request of my editor at Parent's Action for Children (www.parentsaction.org). This summer, PAC is tackling childhood obesity and related issues, so Louv's book was a perfect fit. Thanks to Richard's book, my girls will be spending a lot of time exploring in the backyard this summer, not to mention the neighboring woods. I would be happy to participate in a diversity in adoption forum. With me, you get a two-fer: "stranger" adoption and divorce after adoption. Additionally, I have two friends who might also be interested. One adopted two children, one of whom they have discovered has special needs they were not aware of. The other is a white adoptive mom of a black child. |

Oh, and the author of Weaving a Family (about race, adoption, and family), Barbara Katz Rothman, would be a good resource for your adoption roundtable. My interview with her will run at LitMama later this summer. I'm also reviewing the book now because the original reviewer had to pass on it. She was too busy with her dissertation--HA! ;-) |

Hi Mahogany and all. I feel sick this morning, and in fact, I have to go to the doctor today as we try to find out why my kidneys are bothering me.

Mah(&'Vette): "This ties to the Malcolm thread too, seeing as how Bowie is publicly bi. I guess we know how Iman would answer your question, ABM." ABM: Indeed. And I suspect she's more typical than what many women would care to admit. Though perhaps it's easier to endure public dissemination of such when your sexually-ambivalent love one is a rich/famous rock star. Mah, Glad you're feeling better... Kola, ...and I wish the same for you. |
