If it has happened once it has happened a thousand times--upon learning that I am an author somebody will say, "You know, I have often thought if I could hook up with a talented writer who can put down my ideas, write up my story in a book, blah blah--we could all become rich. I usually handle it by smiling, nodding and never bringing it up again until the mood passes and they forget about it. How about y'all? |

Oh Chris you know it! I just went through an African woman in Canada writing me these fabulous emails praising my books----never told me she was a writer herself----then she sent a ton of her writings to Door of Kush editors, sent ME an expensive gift (care of DOK), begged me to call her on the phone-----and then when DOK sent her a letter immediately saying they weren't interested in her type of work.... ....she completely disappeared without so much as a Gushing friendly "farewell".

Chris, If I were you, how I responded would depend on whether I was being accosted by some hairy dude or some comely woman. If it was a guy, I'd say "Go away bum, you bother me." If it were a babe, I'd say "I'd absolutely LOVE to discuss your book with you. Meet me at [Chris' home address] at [Chris's best mack day/time] and we'll discuss the WHOLE thing. And, oh, dress light...you don't want to get overheated from all the 'hard' work we will be doing." Don't EVEN front like you haven't at least THOUGHT about trynah work that game. HEHE! |

I encounter this a lot, too, Chris. It's always people who want me to ghost write their memoirs, usually folks who have led very unremarkable lives. Then, there's the "takin a class in" crowd, people who think they are doing me a favor by asking me to write themes and essays for them, making remarks like: "I know you like to write so don't you wanna do this paper for me cuz I don't have time and I hate trying to get things down on paper." I just tell them, "uh-uh." |

Abm: I cannot say that I would not be tempted to do that under certain circumstances--but so far I have passed up the temptation. I think I would be only asking for trouble-- Now, if I were to approach her straight up, saying--"You know I am not much interested in your writing. In fact I think its a piece of crap. In fact, I wish I had a match. "Will you go out with me?" If she would accept under those circumstances (probably only in a Chris Hayden novel) I would do it. Hmm. Maybe this is a plot |

Chris, NAW! I think you should go with what I posted instead. It's quicker. Less ethical...but quicker. |

Kola, Find something embarrassing about your mom and emphasize that as you discuss with her what you're going to write. Of you DON'T intend to publish that. But declaring you will may compel her to back off. Or not... In which case you've got hope like the dickens no publisher wants to deal it. HAHA! |

ABM, you don't know MY MOTHER. She would be like: "Girl, what the hell you talk'n about you're going to tell all my bizness? SHEEET you want me to break them long, skinny fingers?" She'd FORCE ME to write about her activities in the Church, raising 8 kids, baking cakes, teaching us girls how to walk with books on our heads---I came here knowing, because I had to walk with a water bucket on mines in Omdurman. I cannot BOSS my mama around---SHE dominates.

Actually there is a new controversy in my neck of experience related to this. Folks writing their dissertations will hire "editors"--Some do just your basic rah-rah, looks good, circle a typo or two and there seems to be little problem with that. (Although it is still out of the norm for students, who are generally only supposed to do this type of thing with their advisor/committee members and other grad students.) But then some people have gone a bit further and had these "editors" do a whole lot more. I once had someone say to me--jokingly, or at least half-jokingly--that I should help them in such a way with their dissertation. I think the shocked look on my face made them think twice aboiut pursuing the "joke" further. |

'Vette, You haven't delineated what "whole lot more" means. Are you suggesting there's more outside 'writing' occurring than ‘editing’? If so, babe that ain't even new. Dat $#*+'s been going down since Plato and Aristotle were taking man-baths together in between philosophy lectures. The only difference now is the technology makes it easier for some geek at MIT, MA to write and get paid for some slackers paper at Caltech, CA. |

Plato and Aristotle were taking man-baths together in between philosophy lectures LOL-ABM, you're too much, really! Seriously, yeah I know this is nothing new--Of course more recently than Plato's time there's the plagarism charge with MLK's Boston University dissertation, and others less famous. And there are likely folks who got away with it. You are absolutely right about technology making this kind of thing easier. I guess I never expected to be propositioned like that. |

'Vette, Sounds like you're coming up in the world, Babe. I know it probably breaks with your moral code. But you really should be quite flattered. Because this person is basically saying you're SO scholastically capable they'll risk their entire academic record and post-graduate future on what YOU can do. I wouldn't do it (Unless they tendered a $#*+load of dough). But at least you should enjoy the 'compliment'.

Crossing "t's" and dotting "i's" should never lead to spreading thighs, - even if a doctorate candidate inpires sighs. On the down low, was it Plato or Aristotle who made this observation. Or maybe it was Homer. Who knows? It's Greek to me. |

One of the main reasons that I enjoy coming to this site and posts apart from the politics and social commentary is that I really admire the way most of you put your thoughts into words. You write and express yourselves so well. Especially Cynnique, Kola, Mah, Yvettep, Abm and the rest I may have missed mentioning. Each one of you has unique ways of putting words together in amazing ways and always puts a smile on my face. You are all great writers and wonderfull human beings. |

Anunaki, Anunaki: "One of the main reasons that I enjoy coming to this site and posts apart from the politics and social commentary..." ABM: Really? Well. I come here to see Kola tear a new one into anyone who dares to disagree with her and to see Cynique, Mah, 'Vette, Babygirl and the others b*+%#slap her @$$ back in check. Oh. The randomn topless photos are cool too. But hey, dude: "Diff'rent 'strokes' for diff'rent foks." HAHA! Seriously. Thanks for the pops, man. My shout-outs and bouquets to you too. PS: 'Sides. You're the only other guy around who absorbs some of Kola's man-rants. So we've GOTTA look out for each other. |
