Here's an email from Tavis Smiley (whom I do not know) that went out to THOUSANDS of people---you may have already received it.

21 THINGS AFRICAN AMERICANS NEED TO DO ACCORDING TO TAVIS SMILEY..

.

1) Register to vote, or shut up!

2) Take all that money out of those stocking caps, in cans, mattresses, and floorboards and invest money in something. For starters, invest in the food you eat and clothes you wear.

3) Learn another language. Ebonics does not count.

4) Stop using the "N" word in the year 2005, especially since Merriam-Webster has announced it isn't changing the definition.

5) Buy something each week from a black vendor.

6) Stop blaming white folks for 98% of your problems, while giving them 100% of your money.

7) Subscribe to Ebony, JET, Black Enterprise, Essence. Then subscribe to one of the three weeklies: Time, Newsweek, or US News and World Report. After we read about what's going on in our world, how about knowing what's going on in theirs? It is, after all, your world.

8) Stop walking past each other and not speaking.

9) Be on time for something, anything!

10) Get an annual check up; herbs do not cure everything!

11) In all thy ways acknowledge Him (GOD) and He shall direct thy path." prioritize this as # 1.

12) Stop being jealous of one another, learn to look past the material things and see the person for who they are.

13) Get involved in at least one charitable or voluntary community service.

14) Say a prayer for someone besides yourself.

15) Hug your child/spouse/parent today.

16) LOVE ONE ANOTHER!

17) Learn to Let Go and Let God.

18) Stop talking about it, and be about it.

19) Let GOD order your steps instead of the world.

20) P.U.S.H.!! Pray Until Something Happens!

21) In all that you do, get understanding, (turn off the TV, and open a book).

Don't just read this, DO IT and encourage others Take nothing for granted..... Tell people what they mean to you - TODAY!!!!!!

PLEASE PASS THIS TO EVERY AFRICAN AMERICAN YOU KNOW.

HAVE A HAPPY DAY!

You are receiving this because you do mean a lot to me.

LOL

I believe he's a PLAYBOY.

But at least the 3 times I've seen him, he had a "sweet" very pretty church type BLACK girl on his arm----a different girl each time, mind you.

And one time....it was quite shocking, because one of the girls was (gasp!) a Chocolate-Skinned beauty with chipmunk cheeks and huge sparkling eyes. Now Out here...that's TABOO for a black man to date a Black woman who LOOKS all black.

So we kinda like Tavis out here.

He sounds like a Cosby mouth-piece. 21 ways to assimilate. Only things missing is "Don't wear your pants up to the crack" and "Don't shake your booty until it breaks"

Kola,

Then I can assume the answer to my question is “NO”.

I like Tavis okay. The reasons for his fame/wealth elude me. He don’t appear to be hurting anybody (wish he’d stop talking with marbles in his mouth, but hey, nobody’s perfect).

I’m just suspicious of foks like him, Oprah, Michael Baiden, etc. who are chockfull of what everyone else need to do but ain’t taking care a spouse/kids. Because all these problems we cry about start at home.

If he ain’t personally contributing to the betterment of that core institution, then what is he REALLY all about?

PS: Perhaps those 3 times you saw him, you caught him on his sistah days.

Anunaki,

I disagree. I don’t see any listen-to-duh-massa spiel in the above. Just mostly good ol’ Black Southern speak.

And I think Tavis has been much more inclined to call to task the (mostly White) dominant status quo than is Cosby.

Cosby seems a part of the dominant status quo.

It still sounds like preaching to folks and especially poor black people middle class values. Give me a break, "Be on time for something", as if poor people don't know that since day one. Even though I like the black empowerment (buy black) statement, I still have to throw in my two and a half sense.

To be an African based in Nairobe, Anunaki3600, you certainly seem well-informed about the black diaspora as it exists in the U.S., particularly in regard to its attitudes and its pop culture. Why is my radar picking up blips in your authenticity? Hummmmm.

Tavis Smiley can eat my shorts. He ought to add for number 22) show some actual talent or competence at something--like being a talk show host--other than the ability to gush and giggle on cue like a brown male Katie Couric!

So, Anunaki, we DON'T need a lecture about running on CPT???

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002278751_naacp18m.html

"A multimillion-dollar lawsuit filed on behalf of 16 black students who
claimed they were unjustly roughed up by Kent School District security
officers was dismissed yesterday in U.S. District Court.

When attorneys representing the students' families showed up late for a
pretrial hearing, U.S. District Judge John Coughenour dismissed the
case."

...

"Garrett and his law partner, James Egan, had been warned by Coughenour
that they needed to be better prepared for court, Harrington said. A
few
weeks ago, the judge fined their law firm $250 for missing a hearing.

While Garrett claims he was only five minutes late to court, Harrington
said it was more like 20 minutes. "What you learn in law school is you
can be late to your own wedding but don't be late to federal court,"
Harrington said."

Well, Chris, apparently Travis practiced what he preaches, and by doing so has achieved something in life. Once again you are dismissing the message because you don't like the messenger. I am not a particular fan of his but I give the brotha his props for gettin over on The Man. And a whole lot of black folks from all walks of life respect him.

Mah,

I agree attorneys, short of their being near the misfire of a nuclear warhead, should ALWAYS have @$$ at court on time. I hope, though, the allege victims are able to refile their case. Their dumb@$$ attorneys tardiness shouldn't permanently thwart them from having their rightful day in court.

Hope they get another legal team, though.

Mah,

Such is almost always the case. Bandwagoning SOB's will probably hurt the case of the kids who were REALLY aggrieved.

Agree with Kola your post makes a most salient point.

And Black foks: If you can get there at 9:05, your @$$e$ can also get there at 8:55.

Cynnique: I lived in Los Angeles most of my life and am in Nairobi for a break. Have been knee deep in Black politics, etc, ever since my radical under-graduate days in college. I am more of an Africanist rather than promote Negritude (blackness, i.e. Leopald Sengor of Senegal).
Mah: It' not that we have to be "lectured" about keeping time, I too sometimes have been late because of a traffic jam, but Tavis Smiley's twenty-one commandments remind me of the Assimilados during the Portugese colonial period in Angols, Mozambique, Cape Verde, etc. where the assimilados, who enjoyed perks, jobs, etc from the colonial system, told the African things like:
IN order to become a assimilado, you have to:
1. You cannot sleep on the floor
2. Have to eat using a spoon, fork, knife..
3. Wear shoes
4. Etc.
They would go un-announced into people houses to see where people slept, if they had shoes or spoons. Check these stories (google "assimilados". Luckly, the poor majority won and the assimilados left mostly for the US. Most now live in the state of MA.

Anunaki,

So what do the Assimilados do in MA? Sleep on their floors, eat with their hands and walk around barefooted?

If so, I can't imagine the non-Assimilados MA'er are any more appreciative of such than were the Portugese. Especially if they're all dining a restaurant together.

ABM,

The Assimilados of MA are "Pogo-niggers". They marry WHITE when possible, they keep the book "How To Make Love To A Negro Without Getting Tired" on their coffee tables as a Bible and they spend most of their time putting down Black Americans, knit-picking and regurgitating the HARVARD grapevine, discussing ways to keep Kola Boof's "foolishness" from catching on and thinking of ways to beguile those Africans who live in the Great Promisedland (England) with stories and pictures of their shining new MULATTO grandbabies.

"Isn't the little one's hair like Proctor Pretoria's, all and sundry!?"

Ha,ha,ha...Ha,ha, ha.

"Papa DunBushka--when you be stopping in London?"

Their diarrhea looks like Pina Collada and rabbit ruffage.

Picture that CHURNING in their ape-like mouths.

Fucking Black, scabby-ass Pogo-Niggers.

So then, the answer to my questions is "No"?

Kola: "Their diarrhea looks like Pina Collada and rabbit ruffage."
ABM: Well. I guess I'm going to haftah postpone my lunch another 1/2 hour. 'Thanks' Kola!

Btw: I wonder whether you kick'd a perspective about the Assimilados that's amendable to Anunaki.
