Our very own Yvette has been awarded a University of Minnesota dissertation fellowship for next year and now can stop practicing her "Well, it was an honor just to have been nominated" speech. Congratulations. I love you, I'm proud of you. I admire you SO MUCH. You're a helluva woman, girl.

Thanks, all, for the congrats. I've heard of academic fellowships: "Too little money to live on; Too much money to turn down." This isn't quite as relevant for me as I will be continuing to (knocknocknock on wood) live off of my husband! Seriously, though, each department in the university was given the chance to nominate one PhD student for these fellowships. I submitted a buncha stuff--the usual, like letters of recommendation and transcripts but also a summary of my research plan for my dissertation. Receiving one of these means I will get some money over the year. The idea is that fellows will be able to dedicate their whole time to completion of the dissertation. No teaching or other work is involved, and it also is not something that needs to be paid back. (However, it is taxed.) But more than that it's the prestige of having been awarded one...being able to put that down on my resume, bring it up in interviews, etc. Particularly helpful for me in this process has been the clarity I gained in trying to explain my project in such a way that a broad range of profs in many fields could see the importance of it. (A side benefit was seeing which folks in the department are truly supportive of me and which ones...showed their true selves!) |

Cynique: For my dissertation I am analyzing interviews of adoptive parents for references they make to their relationships and connections to their adolescent children and their children's birthparents. I'm particularly interested in ways that they do or do not invoke genetics in their narratives. I'll then try to related these themes to these parents' family structure--such as the presence of biological and/or other adopted children in the family, and whether or not they have an open adoption that includes ongoing contact with their kids' birth families. (If you were just asking to be polite, big mistake! I could talk for another five posts about my research-LOL) |

'Vette, Sounds like you're studying a subject that I'll be especially interested in. My wife and I having been discussing adoption. We haven't gotten to far into the process. We're mostly just talking about how we should maybe change our home/work/social schedules/systems to facilitate adoption, what 'kind' of children we're probably best prepared to adopt, etc. But one of the issues we've had concerns about have been how best to deal with the children unreconciled hereditary issues. We have friends who've adopted who seem to have struggled mightily with such and, thus, they seem ill-equipped to advise us. So I'll look forward to you sharing some of the results of your research on this and related subject.

ABM.... the only way to adopt...without hereditary issues....is to adopt an INFANT. With a newborn baby, you really are starting from scratch. But with children older than 3 or 4, you have to be prepared to WADE THROUGH mountains of psychological damage and emotional insecurity. YEARS of serious "rootedness" issues. I, personally, at your age--would get a child as young as possible.

Kola, To some degree I concur, but not totally. I think there are spirital 'issues' that are passed pre-natal. And no matter how much you do/care for the child, there's going to be 'something'...there...('ghosts') that you may have to reckon with. Also, we are adopting, in part, to help remedy social ills. So we do feel partly compelled to adopt an older child, especially since they're less likely to be adopted. Of course, though, that's risky. Thus our deliberation. |

ABM, I support your ideals 100% I was very old when my parents adopted me----and------I was a basket case. But they still feel that the experience was worthwhile and invaluable. LOVE is really the best tool at your disposal. And it (along with "patience" and "time") really can overcome MOST pathologies. I wish you and DESTINED all the best on this, because it takes brave, giving spirits to endeavor in this way. _____ AND..."all" infants are Born with the spiritual animus you described, whether they're yours or somebody else's. LOOK at the huge number of kids who go around saying they "feel adopted" from about age 12 to 17. Look at how kids rebel against their own natural parents--claiming they don't belong.

Vette: ABM, Mahogany failed to sufficiently toot--She has some excellent essays on her adoptive parenting experience on Literary Mamas... Mah: Oh, golly, Beav! You done went and outted me... But seriously, yeah, that's the crux of my LM column, The Girl is Mine. Sometimes I write broader, though. Like my next column will be about the divorce (in part) and it coming so soon on the heels of the adoption, and the fallout from all of that. |

In response to Cynique's query about the subject of her dissertation, Yvettep respondes: "For my dissertation I am analyzing interviews of adoptive parents for references they make to their relationships and connections to their adolescent children and their children's birthparents..." Cynique responds: That sounds like a compelling subject, a study with the possiblity of being adopted as a guideline for adoption agencies. MAH: I think your adopting a child is really a commendable act of kindness, an example of one person doing one thing to make life better for someone less fortunate. So, Kola, you really should adopt a little black girl. If Brad Pitt can express interest in adopting some orphaned African children, so can you. I'm sure the hunky, blond, blue-eyed Brad Pitt is who ABM secretly wants to emulate when he considers adopting a kid. heh-heh.
