...I'M GOING TO BE IN THIS!!! I'm one of those "20 Women Writers" in the miscarriage anthology. Pray I don't end up on the cutting room floor, y'all. (I already cashed the check, so at the very least I got paid, right?) http://www.rebeccawalker.com/article_2005_the-anthology-orgy.htm

Congrats, Mahoganyanais! If they do cut it you'll have to post/publish it somewhere else. |

Mah, CONGRATS! I hope it’s published either here or elsewhere. But even if isn’t, at least you got PAID. I agree Rebecca seemed a tad condemnatory of a literary genre that she and many other female authors have benefited from. Perhaps the dismissive Ms. Walker should consider that most other writers are not able to ride the coattails of a famous parent that way that SHE has. |

ABM, Rebecca didn't write that article. She was quoted in it and posted it on her site. fyi... She's a Yalie, too. A year ahead of me. I'll never forget seeing her literally, physically, being shut out of a circle of black folks brainstorming about what to do about the makeshift shanties set up on Beineke Plaza to protest the Yale Corporation's continuing investment in South Africa. (The administration was making noise about them, but they weren't having the desired effect.) Seems Rebecca wasn't "down" enough to be a part of the "inner circle". I remember thinking to my po' bama-ass self, "If SHE'S not down enough, I don't stand a chance with these people!" |

Mah, Sorry to you and Rebecca for my error. I looked at the photo of her adjacent to the article an mistakenly assumed she authored it. But we know what 3 words "assumed" start with. Haha! |

Mah, Maybe Yale’s Black aristocracy feared a "po' bama-ass" gal like yourself would attempt to ‘impregnate’ your way into one of their wealthy, fine, elite (stick-jammed-clear-up-their-@$$es) Northeastern Black families. |

They had nothing to fear. I wasn't attracted to those "types", nor were they attracted to me. I found myself a good, po' black boy from "outsida Pittsburgh", and stuck with him for the entire four years. And eleven more after that. |

Seems Rebecca wasn't "down" enough to be a part of the "inner circle". I remember thinking to my po' bama-ass self, "If SHE'S not down enough, I don't stand a chance with these people!" Sounds so familiar, Mahogany! Example: I remember when I was an undergrad in Boston going to a reading at a (now) famed writers' collective in Cambridge. Man, those folks were doing everything they could to be Black thru and thru--By their reactions to me youda thought my geeky butt had showed up with a plate of turds or something! LOL |

Yvette: Man, those folks were doing everything they could to be Black thru and thru--By their reactions to me youda thought my geeky butt had showed up with a plate of turds or something! LOL Mah: Yeah. Back then when I gave a shit about such things, I always wanted to explain myself: "No, really, it's not that I'm not 'down', it's just that behind this sexy exterior [ha!], I'm just a struggling nerd girl!" |

Mahogany, I hope it works out for you. I certainly know how agonizing this can be, waiting to see if you're included... ...which is WHY, I don't write anything for an anthology unless I'm promised a spot up front.

Mah/'Vette, Glad you ladies are proud of whatchu are. 'Cause "Guys make passes at cute chicks who wear glasses" (if they put-out). You've inspired me to put "Black Gnerd Girls of the World Unite!" on pocket protectors, eyewear cases and backpacks and sell them outside of libraries. |

ABM--- When I write...I cry, I pee on myself, I have orgasms....I get Nose-Bleeds from writing certain scenes.... ...if I'm writing about something I witnessed in Africa, I often can't get out of bed for two days, because the pain of RE-living it to write it is too exacting. So I'm not about to go through all of that just to be told that my piece was "too powerful" or "too disturbing"-----"Kola, it's good but it overshadows the other women's voices"----- I have to be HIRED to write a piece, as I was in "Politically Inspired". Because they must know that they're getting Kola Boof coming from the gate.

Kola: “When I write...I cry, I pee on myself, I have orgasms....I get Nose-Bleeds…” ABM: Really? I do some of the same kinda stuff when I’m trying to beg sex from my wife. And I thought I was unique. |

ABM: "Glad you ladies are proud of whatchu are." As Mah said on another thread: Black Gnerd Girl power in full effect, y'all! BTW, at the hair salon yesterday I read an article somewhere (Savoy?) about the "types" of "new" Black people. It was the typical, a la Nelson George type breakdown: Bohemians, American Prince/Princess, etc. Guess who was missing. I think we oughta protest this travesty! |

This "typing" as "new" cracks me up! As for protesting, let's propose a new "type": The People Who Sign Your Checks. ;-p That said, I consider myself part Gnerd Girl, part Bohemian.

Mah, Haha! Or how about the "I Can Fire Your @$$!" clique? THAT'll stir-up the kinda respect you want. LiLi: "Abm..?? Your wife should cut you off for playing like that LMAO" ABM: Babe. If you knew what SHE knows, you'd bite your tongue for even THINKING such a thing. ; ) |
