Advise and/or suggestions needed re: A short story copyright 7yrs. ago. In responsse to some submissions have received encouraging feedback, with suggestions for improving the story, but never a request for resubmission. The offerd suggestions resulted in numerous rewrites, revisions and word count reduction to 5712 from approx. 7200. In researching places to submit short stories, noted that all limit submissions to 2-4000 words. Do you think it would b e wise to ignore submission guidelines and send 5712 mms? At the bottom of each page is the copyright symbol, name and year. Given that the copyright is 7yrs. old, do you think this is viewed negatively and should be removed from the bottom of each page? Do you know if the word count includes name, address, phone, etc., title, pg.# & copyright info, or just the body of the document? Thanks for your help!!

Good God! DEFINITELY remove the copyright at once!! Break the rules. Total your word count from BODY TEXT ONLY. Send it in even if it's a little longer than they request. ALSO when submitting----get the name of one of the EDITORS and take a sticker and write REQUESTED MANUSCRIPT and paste that on the front alongside the ADDRESS and ON THE BACK as though that editor asked you to send in your manuscript. The secretary always makes sure they read the ones they requested RIGHT AWAY.

And screw what Writer's Digest says, putting that little copyright symbol on your submission screams that you are a rank amateur. Some places have been known to toss such submissions unread, on the basis of that alone. |
