Wow. Jimi Israel at "Black Voices" wrote an article that is very critical of Tavis Smiley today. Would love to hear your opinions. Here's a Link: http://bv.channel.aol.com/newsmain/voices/jimiizrael/tavis

I saw this earlier today. Jimi Izrael's a pet roach. He's just jealous of Smiley. There was no need whatsoever to even write a piece like this.

Never thought I would posting down here but I agree with most of the commentary. I knew that line that Smiley didn't like that NRP wouldn't promote his show more (especially in the hood), was the full story, as to why he left NPR. And, then he went and signed a deal with PRI. Does he really think they are going to offer more promotion? I listened to his show, and now listen to Ed Gordon's News & Notes. But, then I've listened to NPR for years. The writer maybe jealous but he's more right than wrong on this one. |

Tavis is very glib and he is able to hold his own when he's arguing about the subject of race. But he's not a very good interviewer because he asks insipid, long, drawn-out questions, the subject of which gets lost in his maze of words. He's from the style-over-substance school of journalism. |

I'm in agreement with My2Cents. The commentary is right on the money. Tavis Smiley let his ego blow an important spot IMO.

I only listened to Tavis Smiley's NPR show online, but in the time he was on the air he created an archive which is a valuable resource. I'll miss the show for that reason. However, I have to disagree with jiri izrael (must keep the nom de plume in lower-case, a la bell hooks/asha bandele to create that certain cache of humble, non-judgmental brother -- yeah, right), specifically his objection to Smiley's request to tape the NPR show a day early, which he says "I'd imagine to be a sticking point when you [sic] purporting to broker in something as timely as, you know, news." This kind of -- call it jealousy, sour grapes, whatever -- is the equivalent of what Norman Kelly is guilty of in his recent book on black political leadership, The HNIC Syndrome, when he takes the side of Lawrence Summers in his dispute at the time with Cornel West. Again, now that Summers has managed to offend everyone it's possible to offend at Harvard, all you can say is "yeah, right" (although I never knew Kelley was such a bright cat -- probably cauze I have just about as much interest in his mystery novels as I do in Nelson George's pulp romance oeuvre: One Woman Short, Night Work, etc.) But as Quincy Troupe rightly points out in his April interview in the American Poetry Review, the Tavis Smiley show, although aimed mostly at white folks, carried a lot of interviews with musicians, writers, entertainers, historians, etc. That's what I'll miss, not the stupid news. He's doing what he has to do right now, more power to him. http://www.aprweb.org/issues/current/troupe.html |

Of course, *for personal reasons, I really like Tavis Smiley. But I do agree that Tavis should have stayed with NPR. I admire jimi izrael's bravery in writing what was on his mind without sugar coating it. That's what I try to do. Quincy Toupe, I adore. ____________ Really Great Replies on this Thread!! Thanks

Anonymous, would you want your 'news' a day late? C'mon now. Seems you're doing exactly what you're accusing izrael of. In this world now, of 24 hours a day, a gazillion TV channels, CNN, and the like, and the 'net, many wouldn't even tune in for news that's 12 hour late, and certainly not for news that is 24 hours old. Yep, his features, on his show, were great, but if you see yourself as a 'journalist' rather than a pundit, then you need to be a bit more timely in your news reporting. Have you given Ed Gordon a listen? I agree with Cynique. I also watch his show on PBS and think why don't someone write his questions on a que card and let him just read them. lol His questions can be twice as long as the response, as he has a tendency to repeat himself or start to ramble, as if his guest didn't hear the question or didn't understand him or is trying too hard to be humorous. No one makes a profound point with every statement that they make. |

I’m firmly in the ‘What’s ‘the big deal about Tavis?’ camp. Everytime I see/hear him, I can’t help wondering who’s he’s related to get the gigs he’s gotten. I agree WITH Cynique that he takes forever to get his point. And you’re not very impressed with it after he’s done. Calling Tavis “Arsenio” is an insult to the original. Because Hall never presumed to be especially serious about what he did. He was essentially an entertainer. So, at least Hall at the height of his popularity was humorous and fun-loving, if not often insufferably obsequious. And, for better/worse, you could largely credit Arsenio with the rise in prominence of hip-hop. Because he was the first daily talk-show host to regularly feature the genre’s music/styling. So, frankly, were Smiley genuinely more like Arsenio, I’d consider that a marked improvement. PS: Is it true that Arsenio was nailing Paula Abdul during his run? (“Whoop! Whoop! Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!”) |

One things for sure. Tavis Smiley has a lot more talent in his baby finger than you and Kola Goof put together in both your whole bodies, ABM. Talk about pea brains. LMAO
