Hi all. Someone sent me an email regarding this NATIONAL ENQUIRER article that was posted in another thread---because they noticed that it says that HALLE BERRY is going to play me in a film about my life (I've circled the area where it says this in the article). I wanted to give you the real 411 on that. What's REALLY going on: First of all...a Producer and an Executive at FOX SEARCHLIGHT films read an early draft of my upcoming autobiography and they wanted to make a movie about my life. They pitched the idea to Halle Berry's agent and they claimed that Halle's agent was very excited about it...because the kind of drama in my life is the kind that could win her another Oscar. I was outraged. Not because I don't love Halle Berry----in fact, I'm a HUGE Halle Berry fan and I've met her. She's a sweet, beautiful, wonderful person in my opinion. But I just couldn't believe that they didn't immediately think of Angela Bassett, N'Bushe Wright---or my personal choice, Lauryn Hill--to play the role. When I mentioned all this, they informed me that Halle is the only "bankable" black actress we have in Hollywood today, and that the only way to get a GREEN LIGHT (financing) for the film....is to cast the actress that the studios most believe can make it a success. This is why Diana Ross was cast in 1978's "THE WIZ"...instead of Stephanie Mills, who created the role on broadway and would have been PERFECT--but Diana Ross was "bankable", so they cast her.....AND......it was a monumental flop, mainly because nobody really believed in a 33 year old ROSS being the protagonist of what is a well known American folktale. The Producers fucked up. This is why I just can't see casting Halle Berry, no matter what a box office draw she is. It's TRUE---Angela Bassett looks nothing like TINA TURNER and yet she took that role to the bank and got an Oscar Nomination----so maybe I'm wrong. In any event...despite what the tabloids reported, the film is just "an idea", not even in PRE-Production...there is no script....and I have not cooperated with the Producers and Executives one iota---so that almost insured that they would not make a film out of it. But then again..if Osama is captured or killed, then they could very well throw some bullshit together and put it out as a movie---"Osama and the Slave Girl"---you know how Hollywood is, and that is the reason that I have been dead set against a movie being made about (1)my life or (2)my run-in with Osama. For those who actually read my autobiography, "Diary of a Lost Girl"--they will see clearly that I am not about EXPLOITATION, but rather...I care about leaving a record of my own experiences in my own words. Sally Hemmings, who had a baby by President Thomas Jefferson when she was 12 years old, was not able to do that. And because she didn't leave anything written----they now portray her in "LOVE STORIES" with the President and Slave Owner who OWNED her and her children. It's sick and it's degrading. 100 years from now--people who seem unimportant NOW will become major figures of folklore. Osama Bin Laden is most definitely going to become one--and because of that--there will be lots of people Re-writing history and making up stories about his life. Because I am a public figure, too--I don't want my image lied on and distorted. I don't want to be portrayed as some "LOVE STORY"--the sex slave who LOVED her master. I want to leave my own record of what happened. And this is why I have not supported the film...and am hoping that they don't make one. Once they start filming--you have no control. They make up shit. **FOR those who've heard all the outrageous stories about my life---and don't know what to believe----I truly hope that you will read my autobiography, "Diary of a Lost Girl", to get a better understanding of the facts and events IN ORDER.

Hi Anonymous, I don't know the exact date, because someone at CBS emailed me the story, but it's more than a year ago.

I really hope they listen to you and your opinion on Angela Bassett. I get tired of Hollywood setting the standard for African Beauty for us. Sure Hallie is a beautyful girl, but there are plenty of beautyful black women in Hollywood, in all are many shapes and colors. Angela is a much better Actress and would deliver a smash hit. |
