Last night I was at a concert billed as Smooth Jazz--I despise the term but it was free and it was an opportunity to flog my book, which I did. The band played well and the audience enjoyed it and the people who put on the affair were satisfied--but I was stunned, after listening to "Breezin'", "Mr. Magic", "Is it A Crime"--that 25 years ago this band I used to hang out with was doing the same numbers. Most of the members of the band must have been in diapers when these numbers were new-- I flashed on the memories of 25-30 years ago of listening to young musicians playing swing and Dixieland music and wondering why they were resurrecting that mouldy old stuff instead of playing their own music or making something new. What do you think? Do young musicians harm themselves by playing and singing old music? |

No. Good music is never out of vogue. That's what the "old school" vibe is all about. The classics of any genre of music will always be re-cycled by the next generation. |

Chris, If foks can play music composed by Europeans who have been dead for over 200 years then they play stuff that was made when they were in diapers. |

I wished more musicians did this, given the popular crap that is out now. Man am I getting old or what? I will say this as I get older I find myslef looking backward in time for good music versus staying up on what is current. I'm young dude rock a good old funck jam or when I heard a young sister belt out a tune from the Vaughn, Simone or Etta James song book. b.t.w. Chris I hope you don't become one of those obscene authors always trying sell a book like an agressive pan handler.
