This is certainly not scientific, but I wanted to share some poll results with ya'll from two of my yahoo groups. Let me preface this by saying that the first group is comprised of women who had babies during the fall of 2002. I'm the oldest member of that group and the only black (I'm 40). There is one Latino in the group also. The members are located in a variety of states, including the East and West Coast, Mid-West, South and Southwest. The other group is a group of African-American Marine wives (I'm guessing I'm the oldest in that group too). Obviously, all the members of that group are black. The are located on both coasts (predominantly) and Japan, but are originally from a variety of southern states and urban areas. Now, we did polls on each group asking them who they voted for. Both groups came out exactly the same. 60% voted for Bush and 40% for Kerry. Additionally, I am posting a letter here from one of the black Marine wives who must be in her mid-late 30's. Her letter echoes much of what I am talking about when we say that blacks are becoming a lot more conservative than they are letting on. "Wow, what a fitting day to end our voting to honor all the veterans who fight for our freedoms each day. I have to tell you, the voting thing was a real thought processor for me because I really didn't see where either candidate would satisfy, however, when I looked at some of the issues that were important to me, I had to go with the person who exhibited the most morals. I am sorry, the bible says that men loving men, and women loving women was an abomination and I could not just sit back and see my children not being able to have prayer in school, but a book about Randy having 2 moms was okay. I just wanted to sound off, because my husband had his opinion purely based on his feelings about the war. But if any of you know a little about bible prophecy, this war was going to take place with or without Bush. There you go, that's my spill, and please feel free to rebuttal. I am sure everyone has an opinion and at this point, it is only a conversation piece. Be Blessed!" Just thought this was intersting and a real slice of "black" Americana and wanted to share it with you all.

Lawchic, it is no secret Blacks, as most American's, are social conservatives. Even in a big, cosmopolitian city like New York you can see this.

Bush sent out a well-calculated message, luring people into the trap of accepting simplistic solutions for complext problems; a flawed line of reasoning, by the way. And both black and white voters opted for the instant gratification of being told that a vote for me will dispel all of your worries. |

I agree that Americans, White/Black/other, are generally more conservative than the people of other Western nations. However, I that only partly explains why people voted for Bush. Because the American people are still so traumatized by 911 (aided/abetted by Bush) and Kerry failed to articulate a clear alternative plan to address their fears, it was easy for Bush to steer the political discourse away from the REALLY important issues (e.g., war/terrorism, economy, healthcare, SS, outsourcing, environment, etc.) and towards faux issues of morality (e.g., Janet's tit, sexual preference, partial-birth abortion, gay marriage, etc.). Because, frankly, it has proven much easier for must of us to bash gay couples than it has been for us to nab Osama bin Laden. |

Lawchic: Like you said. Your poll is not scientific and it can only be used with your yahoo groups. A poll taken here could not be used as evidence of what Black America is here, because it does not contain a sampling of enough kinds of people. Y'all ain't the world. |

Damn, Chris. As I recall the first sentence said "this isn't scientific." I even made it clear that there were only women represented in these polls. Give me a little credit brotha. The thing that interested me about it was that there were ONLY black women in the one poll and MOSTLY white women in the other and they came out the same. Not scientific, just interesting. :::pouting in corna by mahsef::: |
