My plan is to watch college football all day on Saturday, followed by NFL football on Sunday, followed by Monday Night football, ending with a dose of the NBA opening season games later in the week. Perhaps I can squeeze in "Ray" at a later date. Glad to see J. Fox on the big screen in more serious roles. Move over Wil Smith! |

Well no--I thought I'd get up with Denzel, Danny, Cornel, John Edgar, Ishmael and Amiri and we'd sit around trying to outblack each other-- More realistically, I plan to hit the streets, go to an art opening, a couple of poetry readings, watch some football, commit adultery with this gorgeous woman I met a few hours ago and drink myself into a state of stupefaction- BUT I will probably wind up reading, writing a little, meditating, staring out the window--leaping up in a fit of rage, tormented by apocalyptic visions while I think of further contacts to make while promoting my novel (I just sent an email about it to my whole high school graduating class--am I crazy or what)-- You know, the usual Remember--you AXED for it! |

I'll be out and about, taking advantage of the balmy Chicago autumn, relishing the sight of trees arrayed in the red and gold of their final appearance. Illinois is the worst team in the Big 10, and Da Bears are the worst team in the NFL, but I'll be pulling for them anyway, even as another disappointing season from Da Bulls lies in wait, even as the spectre of a Bush victory mocks my hopes. Ah, the vicissitudes of life! |

Brelei, I want to see Fox's portrayal of Ray Charles this weekend. And I do think if we Blacks want to see many other films that feature Blacks, we must attend them early/often at the theatres. But my wife is ill. And since she wants to see the film as much as I do, think it better I wait until she's well. Cynique, You think now that the Red Sox have FINALLY beat the curse of the Bambino (stupidly trading a young, ascending Babe Ruth to the Yankees), and won the World Series after an 86 year drought, either or both the Cubs (97 year drought) and the White Sox (87 years) might finally win a Series over the next 5 years? |

Bleek: Mr Baraka of course if we was BLACK enough for him. Abm: Tell the missus to get well soon so she can put you in CHECK! Cynique: I feel your pain. All: I hate going to movie theaters. Y'all folks bring they damn babies up in there (if you can't afford a sitter then you just gonna have to stay at home) and talk at the screen and stumble over folks feet walking back and forth--and they act much better now than they did in my youth! I'll see it when it is on tape DVD Chris |

Chrishayden: While I haven't been lately, if you are ever in the area, Baraka opens his home up to all who are willing every last Saturday of the month. His home is nothing if not a library!!! No TV's, just books! Everywhere!!!! His wife cooks, there is a band that plays in the basement, where there is also a small section set up for whomever the featured speaker, poet- may be that night and then there is open mic -spoken word and folks are selling their books. It's really a warm and invigorating setting. He's so old school and so the epitome of what "Cool" must have origionally meant. Very enjoyable folks he and his family. Bleek-

Foks, Thanks for sharing Get Well regards to my wife. She's mostly fine. Just kinda getting tossed around by a nagging cold. But I've been plying her with fluids, soups and zinc lozengers, so she seems better today. But it's looking like I'll have to 'delay' seeing "Ray" until next week. I could go stag. But she get's pissed if I see a movie alone that we both want to see. She STILL haven't forgiven me for seeing the final installment of the "Lord of The Rings" without her. |

I went to a bachelor party last night that was off the hook!!! 'Bout ten or eleven dancers in this little azz Harley Davidson clubhouse and fifty drunken azz men. They waz freakin' hard up in that joint. Anything and everything was allowed up in there! Tonight I'm going out to dinner(seafood), and hopefully the Ray Charles movie, if the theater isn't too packed. If I don't make the movie, who knows? Thumper's Corner and a bag of popcorn, maybe? Tomorrow, football, beer and 'The Wire'! Ahhh, yes! Sunday afternoon during football season! My favorite time of year! Hey woman! Since you got ya hair and nails did, you can go do some seafood and a movie wit me, right? You only about six or eight hours from here. Come on down, my treat. Anything you want on the menu. ABM-- I am NOT going to sleep with Lambd. So get that out of your mind. Because THAT will not happen. I don't like sex anymore now that Thomas is gone.....and I'm ENJOYING this feeling of not thinking about or wanting sex. Maybe it's age. But I love it. I may even get fat and ugly and just stay out of the public eye and write books without being seen now. It's fun being alone with my own space and not having Thomas come up to me from behind while I'm bending over to iron clothes or wash dishes. I'm not READY to sleep with anyone. Period.

Lawchic: I'm trying to finish up an AALBC.com newsletter before the sun goes down, so that I don't feel like my whole day is shot (http://aalbc.com/october2004.htm). Newletters always require a A LOT of web site updates. I've been at it all day. I was going to break for lunch, but I guess it will be an early dinner. Yesterday (Saturday) we went out to dinner to a new local (Harlem, NY) African/Creole food restaurant. Nothing to write home about but the people were friendly. I also went to a vintner's (that would be wine merchant. I only write this 'cause I did not know what a vintner was until last week, which is a shame given how many bottles of wine I consume. We used to call'em liquor stores around this way. Times are a changing in Harlem. But I digress...) grand opening, also here in Harlem. The place was packed with beautiful people and expensive wines. They had a wine and chanpagne "tasting" but it was more like an open bar. I also finished up an article about web sites (http://writers.aalbc.com/maximizingwww2004.htm) yesterday an shuttled my daughters to and from parties. It had not occured to me to go see the Fox Flick. The review I read about it was quite positive. I plan to see it though, like Chris, I'll probably wait for the DVD or cable broadcast. I go to movies if there is nothing else better to do (around here that just means I'm being too lazy to look). The only exception are the Star Trek movies which I will see as soon as they come out. Now I'm not going to wait in line, but I'll tryo to catch it as soon as I can. It is that interesting you pointed out how this post degenerated. This happens on many posts. Do you (or anyone else) thinks this takes away from quality of the baord given how often this happens? ABM I've already given up on movies. If they are waiting on me to detemine what movies to make based upon my attendance they'd probably stop making them or only make Star Trek movies (smile).

Hi Troy: Hope you got the newsletter done. I can imagine what a job that is. Do the sexual discussion bring things down? I can't say it's all bad. And only because of the inability of cooler heads to prevail. Things get very hot in here and tempers flare, so I've been known to crack a joke myself if it seems like things are getting too personal. But some of this stuff is so hot that I wouldn't attempt to touch it. I just stay away. It's not how I handle things. It's just too bad that remaining civil is a problem, but it seems like it has gotten better lately. Hopefully, it will remain so for a while. Out to dinner...that's what I miss about not being in a metropolis. I love fine dining. There are a couple of 5 diamond restaurants in the Charleston area and that's about it. Lol about the "vintner" comment. I consider myself quite the amateur "sommelier" - look it up if you don't know it...you're gonna need one if you want to drink some decent wine. I also read Wine Spectator magazine (www.winespectator.com). I love the tear out wine shopping list they put in there every month. It lets you know what's really good and what you should be prepared to pay for it. It also lists good value wines (cheaper wines that are actually very good). The only African/Creole cuisine I get around here is this fried chicken and collard greens I'm getting ready to fix up in here...lol. Sounds great, though. I'm so jealous. |

Troy, I know that Im probably one of the last people you want to hear from on this subject but You know you're probably right about the board. But when you had this thread that said "aalbc after hours" I was hoping that it would be a place that we could go to flirt, act stupid, have cat(and dog)fights and generally act crazy. Do you think it would be useful to create an "adults only" page on this site and limit access to this area? Im just askin. I don't know if it would cost you more money than usual or not. I was just wondering if it would help.

Oooh Brother! This again? No offense to anyone in particular so take what I say and open ya mind for half a second before you assume this applies to you. The only thing that brings this board down is when some stick-in-the-mud type tries to direct the conversation in a direction that he/she wants it to go in rather than enjoy (or not enjoy) the natural flow. Obviously everyone on the site has proven that they are conversant on a variety of subjects. Those that can contribute to the subject of the day, do. Those that cannot either stay silent or complain about the direction the conversation has gone in. I say, if you don't like the conversation, what in Samuel L. Hill is stopping you from starting another thread and picking up where you want it to begin? I think the moderators have done a wonderful job of making it easy to start a new thread and even encourage it. I taste a variety of wines also. Usually white semi-sweet wines from California chardonnay to pinot grigio imported from Italy. I guess it shows in your conversation when you are well travelled. You see, I've been to all black schools and integrated schools, played football and basketball, travelled the country in the service, shook hands and made alliances with the lowest form of ghetto thug as well as many leaders of the free and 'not-so-free world'. I like cheap beer and expensive wine. I've done hard physical labor in warehouses, and I've taught a block of instruction on nuclear weapon systems. So you see, some of us don't have a problem jumping from talking about books and current events, to sex, religion and politics. People that cannot transition should sit at the little table in the basement on Thanksgiving. We got grown folks talking up in here. |

A_woman: I think that is a damn good idea. It would not be open to the public. You can say anything you want. What is said on that board would stay on that board -- you know what I mean... Give me a few to set it up. I'm going to go catch up on the new season of the wire. Lambd's post got me thinking about that show. Lambd: One of the things I have always noticed about this board (this is the only one I visit, and, honestly, care about) is that conversations go off topic. This was true in 1998 and will probably be true in 2005. I'm trying to determine if people here care about that. If I think they do, I'm oblidged to do someting about it. I'm trying to make this the best experience for the most number of people. Some feedback I've recieved off baord seems to suggest that this might the case. However, I'm actually more concerned about posters than I am about versus lurkers (even though lurkers out number posters by a tremendous margin), so I value your opinion, in this case, more than most.

I'm kinda with Lambd on this one. I like the spontaneity of naughtiness and indignation interspersed between the literate and intellectual. Especially since the detours into lewdness are usually very amusing and cleverly expressed, as are the slam-fest exchanges. All of this is what makes the board unique. It's like art imitating life. But, there is something to be said for civility and the threads do go off on tangents and they are too long. Maybe we should monitor ourselves and start new threads when the need arises and - tone down our insults. I guess. |

Foks, Can we pretend we are grown for a sec? Cuz yawl know anytime you’ve got guys prowling around dolls for any extended period of time, the discussions are going to "degenerate" into bathroom humor. And that’ll happen no matter how hoity-toity we might want to (pretend) we are. Sides. I don’t know ‘bout the rest of you. But For me, sex talk is a welcomed and necessary intellectual ‘chaser’ to all the other high-brow/technical ‘liquor’ I’ve got to ‘drink’ during the average day. So I must concur with Lambd here (and LAWD yawl don’t know how much pain that causes). Like I used to tell my high school girlfriends: "Just relax, Baby...and go with the ‘flow’." Because we all usually reclaim some sense of civility before the FCC is apt to try to shut us down. And Troy. If this remains the only site you visit, then you should trust your own judgement and leave’er be. Because as Cynique says, the raunchiness is usually done is a fairly clever way. But as soon as you start trynah manage how smart people express themselves, you risk inhibiting the very essence of what makes this site work to begin with. And even if Troy creates another site for "adults only" (which will IMMEDIATELY fly to the top of google’s porn sites search results), how can he POSSIBLY ensure that only ‘adults’ will visit/post that site? Before visiting the site, will we all haftah submit to you copies of our birth certificates and driver’s licenses? Lawchic, Isn’t the haute cuisine of Charleston "Road Kill Chili"? Sommelier: uppity euphemism for ‘wino’. Lambd, Looks like Kola is trynah trick her mind out of doing what her body wants/needs to do. So you might haftah call-up you’re A-game, playah. That does assume, of course, you have such. But sorry, slugger. My tastes stop short of the spank-the-monkey gay fantasy bit. But maybe Cynique can call up some of her ol’ porn producer friends who’ll ‘help you out’. And I think you should keep going at that "Blair ‘Boof’ Project". Sure it’ll be a frightening experience. But the ‘climax’ promises to be a MOFO! Kola says: "It's fun being alone...not having Thomas come up to me from behind while I'm bending over to iron clothes..." ABM says: Yeah. Right. We both know chicks like it when a brothah glide up ‘behind’ them at just the right moment to disrupt the drudgery of housework. If my kids knew what their daddy did to their mama just as she was making dinner last Wednesday, they’d NEVER eat her ‘beef stew’ again. |

Oh abm, you and some of the rest of you just don't like the fact that no one but us "regulars" would see the "clever' sexual inyowindow (sorry lambd) Yall are closet exhibitionist and you want the world to see how "sophisticated" and "witty" you are. And OF Course, the solution to anyone hitting this up as a porn site would be NOT to used the words "adults only" I suggested the title that Troy and them threw away "aalbc after hours" and Troy has already said it would not be accessed by the public--maybe he will restrict it to gold members only or platinum members only??? That way, Troy could preserve the integrity of his site after all it AINT called the african american sex club, now is it? Dont' worry abm/lambd there will still be room on the page for yall to get ya cyberrocks off!! ahahahhahaa! |

Troy has previously noted that this site gets as many as a thousand hits a day, the majority of which are lurkers who keep coming back. Kola says she's inundated with e-mail from people who are both entertained and enlightened by all the craziness that goes on on this site. This board is divided into categories; the book discussion one, the poetry one, and the current events one which Troy recently established. It's not as if people don't have choices and they do have the option to bypass threads that don't interest them. |

Cynique, I agree. If you don't like the show, change the channel. But don't deny someone who thinks differently from you the pleasure of enjoying the program. A_womon, What’s the point of being "clever" and "witty" if there’s no one around to notice you? I don’t get the complaint. Because I don’t just do finger-pulling schtick. I pretty much go ANYWHERE yawl want to go and how you want to get there. Whether it be politics, sports, education, music, family/kids, culture, media, etc. I’m pretty much all over that $#*+ on the recent/regular. I do the stiff-@$$-English-Brit thing. I do the clinical lab rat. And I can be ‘down’er than a MOFO. And even when I’m putting my hand up your dress I’m also droppin’ a gold nugget on your dome. So again, I don’t get it! But okay. I’m game! Just do yur thang and I’ll keep my fingers crossed hopin yawl don’t f#$% something up. Will there be any drinks? Nude dancers? Drunken nude dancers? PS: Baby. Daddy can always find time/space to spout the whale. Just make sure you’re clear when I do. Or I might put your eye out. |

That's true Cynique. My publisher did a "ratings" check on this site before giving them free signed copies of my books to sell (which by the way, the Kola Boof page on this site still has autographed copies of all my books available).....anyway.....this board is HUGELY popular with black women especially and does get nearly 2,000 hits per day. At least 1,000 of those come to the boards...looking for advice on new books and MAINLY to get entertained during lunch break or morning coffee or late at night. I know TONS of "industry people" who come here all the time. For instance, after I mentioned that Sisgal and ChrisHayden had books coming out---a scout from Random House wrote to me asking for copies of the manuscripts and then a different scout contacted Sisgal for "foreign rights" first look at the material. Brandon Massey did a blurb for Hayden's book, which was like a MAJOR stroke of good networking! Also, Harper Collins people contacted me about each of my own books, and have offered to buy at least two, but--we couldn't come to editing and marketing agreements and at Door of Kush I enjoy too much POWER and CONTROL to give it up, because of the deep nature of my work. Still, Harper is waiting for me to become "mellower" so that I fit in and I've become chummy, communicating regularly, with at least 4 different editors at Harper Collins and Harper Collins Amistad....all because of these boards. And, I was stunned last night to be told that Kathleen Cross is published by Harper Collins! And ALL the black divas at Atria and Simon and Shuster lurk around here. Even their #1 superstar, ZANE, has posted here many times. And even bigger literary writers lurk in here, too, but wouldn't be CAUGHT posting. I promised to name names, but TROY is aware of at least two, I believe. It's no joke. This board is really popular, and people LOOOOVE the dirty talk, industry name dropping and gossip, the cat and dog fights. They love Cynique, ABM, Yukio, Chris, Lambd. It's like FAMILY to them. But the vast, vast majority DO NOT POST. I don't know why. But I have to end by saying that MANY have written me to say that they would SCARED to interact with "ME". My candor really intimidates people, although...I'm really a pussycat and very, very sweet. If they could hear my voice saying what I say---they would feel very comfortable and not be alarmed. I don't SOUND the way that I write, and that's a major drawback about the internet. People can't tell the "tone" of what you're saying. Many of us are often taken the wrong way.

A_Womon, You haven't been here long enough or made enough of an impact on the "regular lurkers", I don't think. They have not written me about you. That's the only reason that I haven't mentioned you. I love you girl. I haven't posted email for a number of reasons. Both legal and having to do with the fact that I sometimes get more email than what I can handle. Kola

I really don't get a lot of correspondence because my e-mail address has only appeared here a couple of times. What Kola said about the amount she gets suprised me. Many of the letters I have received were of a personal nature. A few of them were from people curious as to whether I was "for real," and some were from people around Chicago who thought they might know who I was. And, of course, I've received a little hate mail. Oh, yes, I also get verbal feed-back from lurkers who do know me. The general consensus is that lurking on this site is like eavesdropping on a dysfunctional, but fascinating family. These are the ones who say they enjoy the fireworks and sexual innuendo, as well as the intellectual discussions. I haven't received any e-mails lately and I saved very little of what I received in the past. |

Exactly Cynique. It's the email address at my own web site that people write to---and then I believe Troy's Kola Boof page has my email address. So I get TONS of email, daily, from people about these boards.

One thing: I "NEVER" used to get mail about Lambd--but now years later--I mention that I met him and he's so sexy and kind and TONS pour in about Lambd all of a sudden. I hate to say it. But overwhelming majority of mail I've gotten over the years about a single person here was about "Cynique". Usually cussing me out or explaining to me why SHE was right. LOL Second up is about ABM....it's like a soap...people are still waiting for our Luke and Laura type wedding. They are CONVINCED that ABM looks like Billy Dee and Denzel, and they Ignore me when I tell them---"I've never met him in person!". One woman called me a liar. She wrote: "Yall been fuck'n. Yall ain't fool'n nobody in Galveston, Texas, I tell you that."

Well I said I would wait for video to see Ray. However the overwhelming response was that this movie was fantastic. I' not read a single negative thing about the movie. People are saying it would be criminal if Jamie does not get a Oscar nomination -- if not the award itself. ABM said a couple of weeks ago: "And I do think if we Blacks want to see many other films that feature Blacks, we must attend them early/often at the theatres.". I will definitely support this movie in the theater. I wanted to go this weekend but got jammed up. I will defintely go soon. I hate to get pumped up about a movie, 'cause I'm usually disappointed. I tell you now, after hearing the word of month hype, I'm looking forward to seeing this one. Check out a Marvin X review of the movie Ray' http://www.aalbc.com/reviews/ray.htm

The movie Ray was the best movie I saw in a long time. The music was a big component of why I enjoyed it. However, the entire cast performed wonderfully. I just hope, as ABM suggests, that my spending $9.50 a ticket at the Halrem Magic Johnson Theater will result in more movies like this being made. My 11 year old got a little antsy at toward the end; aksing once or twice "How long is this movie?" I don't recall the last time I saw so many black senior citzens in a movie theater. I will buy the DVD. Will Jamie follow fellow comedian Jim Carey to the 20 million dollar mark? I doubt it, but my rationale has nothing to do with ability (Fox has been in better movies and is a better actor)...

Troy, I agree it was a wonderful film, and the music was the best! Jamie Fox was outstanding and overall the entire cast did very well. The young boy playing Ray took my breath away, so natural! I'm gonna have to go out and purchase some of Ray's old music, cuz I was lovin that gospel/blues sound. |

Jamie Foxx had the sensitivity to underplay this role, thereby escaping the trap of rendering an impersonation of Ray Charles, something any comedian could do. He did a good job but I don't know if Hollywood is ready to hand out an Oscar to another black actor this soon. We'll see. As for the music, they didn't call Brother Ray a "genius" for nothing. |
