I'm an insomniac, too, because I'm a stay at home mom and I write my best stuff at night, it seems.
Plus, my children's father just left us. He lives in the L.A. now and we stay on the ranch.
I was raised in Washington, D.C.

Oceanside is beautiful. I have a friend who lives out there, but her husband made a pass at me and I haven't been able to tell her or face her. That was a year ago.
Finding an agent is really tough if you haven't already been published. But I will keep an eye out for you.
What's your novel about? I might be able to get my publisher to read it.
But I warn you--I'm on a small indie label. Still, they're the best publishers I've ever had. They put out THREE...3 titles by me this year, sent me on a 5 city book tour and are publishing 2 titles by me in 2005.
They will be looking for new novels for FALL 2005.

You'll find that a LOT of famous black authors come here regularly, and also---agents, editors and publishing people.
That's why I'm so hated in the industry. They learned what a vitriolic bitch I am from visiting this site.

OH CLARIFICATION:
The 3 titles they put out by me this year were not all written in one year. They were originally published in Arabic and are pretty much my "greatest hits"--finally making it to the U.S.. And next year I have my autobiography and a collection of Erotica coming out.

Just because you are surrounded by whites, have favorite white actors/actresses, and have slept with white men does not mean you are void of racist feelings. I knew there would be "reasons" why you'd rationalize what your father did. I find it comical that you talk about my children's "blackness" still not being "good enough" yet, will buddy up to Kathleen who is as white as me, if not whiter in tone and tell her you love her. MOON....
1) One thing GOD has to work on me about...is that I have major FEAR, prejudices and animosities against people that I perceive as being like my Grandmother Najet Kolbookek (the Egyptian woman who put me, her own granddaughter, up for adoption). I was put up for adoption just WEEKS after witnessing the murder of my birth parents. And I truly hate her...and people I perceive to be like her.
Again, I'm not proud of the lasceratingly hateful, evil things I've said about YOUR KIDS (calling them brown 'n serve Dalmations) or about your husband or YOU. But you seem to bring it out in me.
2) MY FATHER, Harith Bin Farouk, "instilled" my ideology in me about race--I didn't "teach him".
Much of his Rage/Anger came from the fact that he was considered "white" in Sudan and after having been educated in the South of France, wanted to reconnect with his Falasha and Black African blood ties. He was adamantly oppossed to white supremacy and fought against the building of Lake Nuba and was one of the very first people (An ARAB white man) to publicly complain about seeing "slave raids" in Sudan and was friends with SPLA President John Garang (whose house I used to go to when I was a little girl). My "white" father took me on excavations with him to Meroe and Napata and taught me how to shoot guns, how to build boats....and he broke Islamic law by sharing meals with me (fathers and daughters cannot eat together in Sudan).
It was my BLACK AMERICAN adoptive father, Marvin Johnson, who was far less "race conscious" (because he is a military man)...but after fighting to attain my citizenship (which took about 13 years!!!) and after raising me and paying for all my psychiatric help as a child....he BECAME extraordinarily sensitive to race issues.
3) I am in agreement with legendary Egyptian woman writer and scholar Nawal-El-Sadaawi who said: "The only thing that Diversity does...is divides us from our own people."
Multiculturalism in America is a JOKE. There is not such thing. This nation is a White Eurocentric nation in which all its inhabitants must ASSIMILATE to Eurocentric standards, thus becoming white supremacists.
Just as SEXISM rules by making most women into "sexists" themselves who in turn believe that "boys will be boys" and continue to breed sexist sons.....thus White Supremacy can only work if MOST of the citizens are "white supremacist" themselves.....and MOST of the black people I have met in this country "are definitely" cloaked in the belief that the white man's ice is colder.
Therefore, I don't waste my life with bullshit white supremacy.
4) Lastly MOON....you tell a GREAT LIE when you claim that I said "fuck GOD".

ALL "MEN'S" religions....should be abolished!
And we need to go back to the Women's Religions that existed before Christianity and Islam were FORCED upon the people through war.
I cannot wait for the day when my book "Stay Out of Men's Churches: Essays, Speeches and Politics" is finally released in the United States.

No disrespect. But yawl Black @$$es (Well. I guess that would be ‘purple’ for you, Kathleen...hehe!) know that Moonsigns ain’t going to get most of the substance of what you are trying to say, especially with respect to Kola, who’s life experiences and perspective are polar opposite those of her’s.
Because to live the life she lived from her birth - thru her privileged White upbringings, up to marrying/raising Black people - she’s probably had to adopt a more Pollyanna perspective, if for no other reason but to avoid losing her mind.
So the questions I have for you all is the following: Are we getting anywhere here? And if she’s not going to "get it", what good is this?

My mother is a 77-year-old white woman who GETS the CONCEPT of unearned privilege. One of the privileges of being white in America is the "privilege" of remaining ignorant and arrogant at the expense of others.
My mother never adopted a "pollyanna" mindset to protect herself -- , as you wrote, "if for no other reason but to avoid losing her mind."
She WELCOMED black women into our home who were not "assimilated to whiteness"; she WELCOMED Black women into her heart who DID NOT THINK LIKE HER. She did not escape to the suburbs and surround us with white and "mixed" people who would "save" us from "blackness." She did not send us the message that we were fortunate for having a white mother. (Though MANY MANY others have tried to convince us of that over the years)
Honestly, my momma's heart is tender and huge and I dont know... she might be hurt by some of what Kola has said here, but she would NEVER be so ARROGANT as to question Kola's right to say it.
My mom was VERY naive about race when she was younger. There were LAYERS and LAYERS of ignorance (and denial) for her to unravel.
HOWEVER, she opened herself up to learn about whiteness and blackness from the POWERFUL Black women she's known, and she would know to listen to Kola's VOICE and A_Woman's voice and hear the voice of the CREATOR weeping for humanity's BLINDNESS.
The ORIGINAL post that started this very long thread was one in which Kola was speaking about the MANY lurkers there are out there who read these exchanges.
I suspect that the energy expended here is not and never was for Moonsigns' benefit. She is simply a tool for others to learn from.

And perhaps I paint too broad a stroke.

That suggests to me that your mother may have at some point thought/behaved similarly to what we describe here.
Is that at least a possibility?
Because, if that is true, I must presume that your mother had to (perhaps even be forced to) willfully/actively WORK to evolve to the state of conscienceness and understanding that bother she and you now enjoys and benefited from.
So, perhaps the important question here is is Moonsigns and those who think like her willing/capable of doing the same. |

Kola is nothing but a black separtist. You say I should't tell her what she "can say" and what she can't. I'm sure though, that you'd tell a white separtist that their ideology is wrong and they have no right to say the stuff they do. Kola wrote that interracial relationships exsist because "black women don't/didn't love themselves enough". That comment alone does three things. First, it devalues the power of love, which is the foundation of everything. Second, it discredits the very nature of human sexuality as the DIVINE created. And lastly, it dishonors the couple and reduces their partnership to nothing. It IS wrong for people to assume things about people/couples they don't know based on their own insecurities and prejudices. Love is not about possession or the owning of anyone or anything. I don't expect you to understand this though considering this is what you wrote regarding your own parent's relationship:

While this may be true for your experience, there are many interracial couples who don't love for these reasons. I can't expect you to relate because much of what you think now was molded by this very unfortunate experience.
Times are very different now. Interracial couples don't have to endure the shame that they once did for expressing and sharing love. Their children are more liberated. Your mother had her own reasons for keeping you where she did. However, I keep my kids where I do for my own reasons. I'm not saying one is better than the other. However, I will say, the children of interracial couples can live in communities where there are plenty of families who are just like their own. "Moving them out to the suburbs" is a great way for them to understand first hand just how normal LOVE is and how normal their family is. Don't portray the suburbs as if they "keep" kids from their blackness. My children have such an immense appreciation and love not only for themselves, but for the various cultures/people and faiths they have been exposed to by living in the suburbs.
Understanding "UNEARNED priviledge" is something I understand. However, understanding "UNEARNED prividlege" and fighting on the behalf for the better of humanity does not mean I lose my integrity in the process. Kola shared with everyone how her aunt told her that (paraphrasing) "everything white women have, even her sense of self, is at the expense of someone else." What a blanket generalization that has unfortunately coverd Kola's entire mentality--to the point where she freaks out on a faceless, nameless chick on the internet who would never harm her, ever! Whether it is the prejudice that is taught from the lips of white, black, asian, hispanic or indian people, it is ALL destructive. If you have the logic to call the words of white racists wrong, then you surely have the logic to call a black racists wrong. Ultimately, it either restores, or destroys. We make that choice. If we say one is wrong, but make the other conditional, we continue to suffer--and always will.
Kola's poetic when she writes, her language is sugar coated but you must remember, you too, aren't black enough for her. You champion the cause of a woman who has ignorantly called my Biracial/Black children a "litter of Dalmations"--children just like YOU. She prides herself off of "fooling" people into "thinking she is a nice African lady" (and has nerve to call me a "two-faced bytch"). She has also mentioned several times how prejudiced she is regarding Biracials calling themselves "black". That seems to have fallen on deaf ears--not all though. She has called me every derogatory name anyone could imagine, yet, you think I should somehow just "let it all go"--because you know, afterall, everything I have is at the expense of other women. Please. That's bullshyt!!!! I want restoration, but I can't do it alone. If people keep telling me how shytty I am, I feel as if it's not healing they want, only someone to blame--especially if people know my sincere heart, or will never give me the benefit of the doubt. It's a double-edged sword.
I've listened to Kola's voice. It has been loud, cruel, bold and vile! You seem to hear it a different way. So be it.
In regards to the "curse"--I don't curse anyone. Spiritual law takes care of that--so yes, people must be careful what they say for we will all be held accountable. No matter what anyone says or thinks here, my heart, mindset and life is nothing like Kola makes it to be. Indeed, "THE UNIVERSE IS LISTENING"--tell your sister as well. MAYBE she'll listen to you.
I will always remain positive. Kola is not the first woman I've met like this, and won't be the last. Love rules.
I was 110% sincere when I told you your work is valuable. I think you are very intelligent, kind and have a beautiful spirit! I don't think there is anything else to say though. I have to agree to disagree.

I consider Kathleen to be African, because she clearly shows that MY ancestors are a big part of who she is.
Do I see her as "black"? NO.
But the fact that she sees herself that way is more because she's American....not raised in Africa, so therefore, she is following through with her ancestor's wishes for her....to be black. She is basically saying that she is "THEM" by using the word Black.

But they are equally comfortable in a mansion in brentwood, a house in East L.A., the Valley, Chinatown... etc. THERE IS NO COMMUNITY OR PEOPLE THEY HAVE LEARNED TO IRRATIONALLY DISRESPECT OR FEAR.
They did not learn THAT in the suburbs.

Yes, Kathleen. We should get together as soon as I can get clearance for it.
Many people noticed that when I did my book tour...I didn't do a signing/appearance in Los Angeles, which is the nation's 3rd largest market. The reason is....that is the region I live in and I'm not allowed to function publicly in or around the city----it's too close to home. So I had to tour the east coast and midwest. I will get a special clearance to socialize with you.
I don't know if you know it....but I'm a professional cook.
I could make us a big dinner and we could have a wonderful time. Do you like seafood? How about Mexican? My boys are only 5 and 7, so the girls would find them adorable!

Of course you can come, JUST WRITE!
I would really like to do this when my sister and brother come to visit right after christmas right before New Year's Day. I am so busy right now getting my short story done for Paris Review, overseeing the books by Chris and Sisgal and arguing with my publishers over the final version of my autobiography (they want to cut out the chapter called "The Authentic Black Man"). I'm really busy.
But I would definitely love us all to get together.
And I ESPECIALLY want Kathleen to help me out with my brother.
My brother is also ADOPTED (we are not biological), he's a brain surgeon and RICH...his biological father was black and his mother was white and he LOOKS white. People think he's an Iranian or something, but he's "black". He and his wife just had their 3rd baby....but I want him to meet Kathleen, because I think he really needs to talk to her.
He is very bitter about people accusing his wife of "marrying a white man". And I could not get him to read Kathleen's book "Skin Deep"---he's a doctor and he's always busy.
Of all my 5 brothers that I was RAISED WITH---I am ONLY close with him.
He is the only brother I have who checks on me twice a week, talks to me for hours and watched over me when we were growing up. He adored me from the day I came to America.
I'll get my sister Katrina to fix her famous "Black Man's Burritos". You talk about something good! But I can't fix those--Katrina's one of those heffa's that won't share her recipes. She'll also make us some Mexican side dishes and finger foods (that's all she knows how to cook is Mexican food)....and then after I get feedback from Kathleen I'll make the rest of the menu myself.
My boys, however, will insist that I make Greek Pizza or Bar-B-Q on the grill for them.
They also like to eat "spiders" when company comes over (what they call Crabs, girl). LOL
Me myself, I'm a seafood lover. I eat a LOT Of lobster, shrimp, fish dishes and big salads, almost daily, and Thomas has a running joke about that being where my "monetary allowance" from him goes--on lobster.
I can't help it.
ALSO....just in case you like "chitlins"....I would love to cook you some Egyptian Chitlins. They're delicious!.....(and) black people in this country are always so shocked when they find out that "chitlins" are one of the most popular dinner foods among the BLACKS in Upper Egypt (South Egypt is Upper Egypt)...North Egypt is LOWER EGYPT. You have to ask THEM why! LOL
Anyway, the Egyptians fry their chitlins in honey with tomatoes, palm wine and hot peppers and pour it over Porridge (Cream of Wheat). It's DELICIOUS.
Back home we would have deep fried salted locusts with it, but I'll leave those out.

My mouth is watering over here just thinking about "spiders" and lobster. I have tried chitlin's many times and only liked them once. They were really delicious I don't know what the sista did... But every other time I've tried to eat them... well you know that screwed up face folks like to flash at you when you mention chitlins (picture me making that face now)
I fry some pretty mean red snapper and my candied yams, jambalaya and baked salmon are always a hit at my house. However, DISCLAIMER here... I am by NO MEANS a professional.

You shouldn't have to bring anything that I can think of.
Except if there's certain board games your daughters like or music you like.
I myself love to sit out in the shade with someone like you and just eat and have deep, long discussions about "whatever". I'll make us some home made wine, you'll love it! And I want so much for my brother to get to meet you, because you're so HEALTHY and so RIGHT and if myself and Spring (my other sister) listens to somebody---he always will, too.
And I consider you to be more "wise" than I am. I want you to know that. I'm more "passionate".

I look forward to meeting your family, and am intrigued by what you've shared about your brother -- I suspect there will be many life experiences and insights he and I can share and compare.

Kathleen, that's wonderful about your daughters.
I didn't realize they are grown. Yes, we'll have a great time soul searching and sharing.
And you will see how SOFT, open and funny I am in person. All notions of me acting ugly will evaporate.
When you hear how I speak, you will see that much of what I say here....is really not in the TONE or with the "absolute seriousness" that people hear it in.
Even MOON would have fun at my house.

I love Chitlins, too. American is my favorite way, because when I was a kid in Sudan, I only got to eat the Egyptian ones when we went to visit Arab family in Egypt---but I ate the American ones at least 4 times a year in Wash. D.C.
I love hot sauce on almost anything!! LOL
In Sudan, we had to make our hot sauce. It's called "shata".
We fry our coffee instead of boil it. You fry the coffee beans over charcoal with spices like cinnamon and clove. Then you pour water over it and then you strain it through a grass sieve. It's very delicious.
My mother was a "Gisi-Waaq" Oromo...they worship the Crow and Coffee Beans as being "holy"...so we had to make coffee MANY different ways--every day.
My mother Jiddi and Auntie Ramah were topless every day and they were like elegant swans. Always quietly cooking and cleaning. I remember them.
