The following "revelations" are part of a post I wrote to MOONSIGNS.....letting a few cats out of the bag about my so called "relationship" on this board with ABM and why I'm actually on this board creating so much HAVOC. While many think it's TROY who is a Kola Nut for having me here....the real truth is, Troy isn't ALL THAT "thrilled" with me....there's ALWAYS been..."something else"....going on. I've even added some stuff about CYNIQUE to open you all's eyes and a lot of additional notes about my interaction with very famous people, because of this board. Here's what I shared with MOON-Cluck *********** It's no secret that ABM and KOLA is one of the longest running soaps on this board, and just 18 months ago, was SO POPULAR--that editors at Random House, JET and Atria built their coffee breaks and lunches around it. Then I got kicked off by Thumper's evil jealousy. Then by overwhelming demand...I was brought back...as Snake Girl, then Passion, then Kola, then Miss Wysteria and now Kola Boof. And if I'm not with ABM....people write me emails complaining profusely. For instance...when I had the HOTZ for Lambd after meeting him D.C.---I got tons of fan mail admonishing me that my place is with ABM. And when the old lion, ABM, started "being nice" to you---even more mail poured in, hilarious notes saying: "You're not going to let her take your man, are you Kola!?" Many of these people writing me,MOOON....are top GROWN ASS editors and executives at Publishing Houses and Magazines like Random House, Black Scholar and HONEY. These boards are CRAWLING with "lurkers" who never post, but have come to think of people like CYNIQUE as "family friends", in fact--they love her! Her being the person they LOOOOOVE me to fight with--although, I've always secretly admired and adored Cynique and shied away from the blood gorges we get into. I've had EMAIL from some of the biggest most famous BLACK AUTHORS in America.....not because of my career achievements....but because they wanted to question or advise me on something I said on THIS BOARD. And related that they come here...just to see me "talk shit". Others...like Tee Royal and Zane...have openly told me that they think it's "SAD" and "not classy" or not the proper role for a rising "literary star"....to be making a fool of herself on a public board, acting like a petulant child and a sex kitten for some black hunk (ABM--who everyone is CONVINCED looks like Billy Dee and Denzel rolled into one!). Of course TEE and ZANE were only "concerned" for my public image and my reputation, as sisters would be. On the other hand, bestselling author Tracy Price Thompson wrote in her chat room interview----"Kola, I fell in love with you at aalbc.com!!" I once got an email from an actor from "Hill Street Blues" asking me to marry him....then another from a black news anchor in Baltimore wanting to take me "shopping" at Fort Knox, Tennessee. And still another email from a book editor telling me----"You'll never write for _______ you prejudiced witch!" And right now...all I get is email asking "When is Yukio coming back, where is he?" They thought him turning out to be "a man" after YEARS of us thinking he was a woman...was a FANTASTIC plot twist! For weeks they were loving that development!! This is the INTERNET, folks...and people count on their daily doses of "Matt Grudge Report"..."Africana.Com"..."N.Y. Times"....and once upon a time, "ABM and KOLA act'n squirrely on aalbc.com". Because I have a very popular web site of my own....with an EMAIL address for fans to write me, and because I'm so...OPEN, my every Vulnerability laid BARE...people write to "ME"--complaining that Carey isn't posting enough or that I'm not being bitchy enough lately! And yes, Moon, I've been likened to Sylvia Plath and Virginia Wolf for my "emotional ambiguities". And compared to "Zora Neal Hurston" for my eccentricities. And have had a hard road being a confused young woman...and now am coming into my own. I'm just me. A very UNORTHODOX author in a traditionally "conservative" black market. And it still doesn't stop me from writing for The Paris Review or having books published and praised. Who knows, Moon? Maybe that gutt-wrenching naked honesty just rings a bell in people...no matter how many layers of MATURITY they cloak themselves in? And by the way...I've been able to accomplish some very positive things here as well. For instance, security publishing deals for board regulars Chris Hayden and Sisgal. All because...it's WHO you know, not WHAT you know. There is more to my being here...than meets the eye. And let the record so state that as well. | ||

Unfortunately, because of the outrageous costs of my book tour....DOOR OF KUSH BOOKS AND MUSIC had to push back their release dates, as well as the release dates for my next two books. And.........I just signed to release a very wicked, very naughty EROTIC short story collection, sans any politics, called "BLACK CAT", which features a very intriguing little story called....."ABM". The MEN want you JustWrite. They've been passing around your photos from your site and asking me if I've met you in person. Most people want you and I to fight, but after being paired up as Cynique's arch enemy..I don't think I could take another rivalry with another sister. Well, since modesty doesn't seem to be a priority around here, and since we're tootin our own horns, let ol Cynique advise anyone who just might be curious that she ain't exactly a dog, herself. In my day I was a fox and, although I am past my prime, when I put myself together, I can still turn heads because I've mellowed with age, and nobody EVER guesses me to be as old as I am. Young men find me fascinating, - but that's because they're so easy to charm. My daughters' boyfriends alway adore me. And, when I worked at the Post Office, I had a a fine young stud at my beck and call. (blush) As for the viagra crowd, all I have to do is smile coyly and playfully grab a hand and they're ready to pop a pill. And about my husband. Yes, he does exist. Although all of the discussion boards fall under the Thumper's Corner banner, I moderate only one of the boards and that's the Original Thumper's Corner. So if you act a fool on that discussion board, I will ban you. It also explains why Cujo can only post on this board and not the other one. The Poetree board is moderated by Rondall Brasher. Folks who visit and post on his board has to deal with Rondall. The Culture and Race board is moderated by Troy. Again, it's up to Troy to deal with what happens on this board. I don't tell Troy how to moderate this board. He does not tell me how to moderate mine, or Rondall's or Liberti's. Each of the discussion boards are to have their own flavor and personalities. PS: I know I don't have to acknowledge the lies Abercombie the Zombie has been spouting in this thread. I hope you all don't believe it. ABM, I don't know what words to use to apologize for cutting you off so cruelly. And the only reason that I don't know what words to use....is because if it were me....I probably would not accept the apology. I definitely meant everything that I said. Before this discussion goes any futher a distinction between reality (what/how I LIVE) and perception (what some women here THINK) must be made. Perception: That I think black women are "ghetto". REALITY: I don't. Never have, never will. Perception: That I am trying to show how "ghetto" black women are by writing certain things. REALITY: If I don't think black women are ghetto, this isn't even relevant. However, let me elaborate as to why. First of all, I believe it is both a physcial, as well as spiritual skill to be able to master oneself (as much as humanly possible). I also believe in people taking responsiblity for their actions. It is one thing to be angry, yet another thing to lose composure caused by unwarranted emotion and lose all sense of reality because of it. What we have seen here is an unwillinglness (on some people's part) to admit, as well as be responsible for their certain attitudes, perceptions and behavior. In turn, my race and situation have made me a scapegoat for some folks unreconciled anger. Ultimately, while I understand how some people can hurt, however, I personally, am not to blame. I am blamed for things, ideas and feelings I don't (in REALITY) own. To impose Kola's issues on me is negating her responsibility to control herself. It's not my problem when other people can't control themselves (regardless of who it is). That is why I remain silent for the most part. When you (Justwrite, A_womon, Kola) encounter a woman who REALLY thinks as you only accuse me of, resolve it with them. My whole point is I don't have to waste energy on fighting what some people THINK of me when I live the truth. Also, to see the truth for yourselves would liberate all of you. It's kind of like a person in jail holding the keys to open the cell, but they won't. There is a pay off for the pain. Most of the time it is attention--even if it's negative. Sad. Cynique, If you don't mind my saying, it always bothers me when us more 'mature' foks naysay the present and the future. There something about that sentiment that is unfairly arrogant to me. Because it falsely suggests that we good ol' foks are so much better prepared to inhabit this world than our kids and grandkids. And my problem with that is 2 fold. Number 1, in most cases that "things were so much better then now" fantasy is just a total bunch a bull$#*+. It is easy to wax rhapsodically about how things were so much better 30 years ago than now because the troubles of those times are a distant memory. But as we clearly reflect upon those times, we are painfully made to recall Black people wholly being denied opportunities - to vote, get home loans and jobs - that are no longer denied them. And Number 2, I think it is wholly unfair of us to speak ill of what lies ahead because it potentially becomes a form of self-fulfilling prophecy that, in effect, poisons our children's future. | ||

Kola (and all), The whole point you are trying to make is based on a generalization. Saying that "EVERYTHING" white women have is at the expense of someone else is too, too broad. You don't know every white woman in the world. There are white women (and white men) who don't own the feelings you accuse them of. As a matter of fact, I watched a program the other night about some white Americans (both male and female) who are over in the Sudan helping the victims of the genocide there. This is just one example that proves there are no absolutes in this life. I know that white women are not "morally superior" than other women, or "goodness and light". As I've said before, I think that every race/color of people are made up of both good and bad individuals. Stating that white women want everything black women have minus the color is another very broad generalization. I don't want to be black, but it's not because I don't find some black women to be beautiful people,or that I think myself to be better. I just like being who I am. Every woman should love who she is just because she "is", not because another woman isn't. What your aunt told you doesn't apply to me....the way I think about myself or other women. That is why I think of all women as part of a greater sisterhood. I can't be punished for crimes that I didn't commit. I can't be punished for crimes that I don't even have the mindset to premeditate. The way you've painted my heart is so far from the truth. The way that black women are portrayed on the norm is unjust, however, it is not just whites who will exploit. Ultimately, the remedy to these issues (in my opinion) will only change when the blacks demand that the standard be changed....a rebellion so to speak, but a productive rebellion. I have always agreed with Abm's sentiment that things will change when blacks are in positions of ownership/leadership....positions to call the shots and to make positive impacts on the community in general. I also feel that interracial relationships are overrated. The generalizations that black men are marrying a white woman to only "marry up" is also a great misconception. Considering that interracial dating/marriage isn't the norm within the black community (or any other community) I think these people need to be given the benefit of the doubt. There are many social obstacles that an interracial couple endures to maintain their relationship with dignity. People who are together long term, especially married couples, obviously aren't together out of curiousity or jungle fever. Again, generalizations about these unions that I find way too broad. I will also add that I find it bizarre how black men are held to a double standard when dating/marrying "out". Kola, you only mentioned black men, where are all the black women included in this? There are definitely more pressing issues regarding the overall well-being of the black community. Lastly, I don't think I'm being "generous" by lending my genes. I totally don't think that way. However, considering that you don't give me the common respect to honor my word as it is, your comment is understandable--though not reality. | ||

Lambd, This is where you, Kola and A_womon are wrong. I don't come here thinking that my whiteness makes me better, or that my words should hold more weight because I'm white. I'm sharing my opinion like everyone else. You also make very broad generalizations. I understand what you are talking about when you say I'm a "beneficiary", however, how do you propose that white people play their part in ending white supremacy? If I you have no answer that means the situation is hopeless. I, on the other hand, don't believe the situation is hopeless. For example, the people in that news segment that went to Africa to help with the genocide in the Sudan, they are showing by physical action that they believe the "system" is wrong--and will do their part to fight it. Just because other white people doing this kind of stuff aren't on the news, it doesn't mean that things like this aren't happening. The progress that our country has made racially is also proof of my point. There is a lot that has changed in the last 40-50 years. My life is also proof of that. I have never claimed to be an expert or say my way is better, but you seem to negate the fact that I live daily life with other human beings that happen to be black. By marriage alone, I am involved with black people and black women. I have children whose hair and skin is totally different than my own. I take beautiful care of my families skin and hair, not because I'm white, but because I love them--it's birthed from the natural appreciation and desire to care for those that I love. My girlfriends and I talk about beauty products all the time and I have learned many things not just from them, but on my own as well--all because I care. Hi Moon- I have to say, sometimes your posts sound veeery naive. And, I do not think that they sound so because you are any less intelligent than anyone else on this board, I think they sound so because many times you speak of what you do not know (where black issues are concerned)and you do not listen enough to be enlightened. When most of the folks on this board speak about issue's such as this one where race and priviledge are concerned, we/they are speaking WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY BEYOND THE INDIVIDUAL experience. WAY BEYOND-- and your arguments always seem to be out of relation to you. You immediately retreat to protecting yourself or giving reasons why you are "different". I am not saying that you are or aren't "different", I'm just saying that you have the most unsurprising and predictable views sometimes. Many times, your post's reek of the old modern day white jingle "I wasn't there! I didn't own any slaves, I have black friends!" . And that, is a method of trying not to accept your responsibility in the situation. The issues of black folks go beyond what you see on a day to day basis with your black children, your black husband and your black friends. While I can understand that they may be your prime area of reference, I cannot accept that being enough for you if you are truly interested in what is discussed on this board. You have to let go of some of the things that you think you know and grab a pen, a pad and start inquiring. I think that your time here would be a great waste of time if you didn't. And Moon, it is okay to say that you would not want to have your life to do all over as a black woman. Sh!t! Moonsigns, I too have observed the double-standard you cite. I suppose a response might be that Black women are less inclined to mate with White men than are Black men with White women. Thus, the effect of Bleek's admiration of Damon/Clooney (both of whom, interestingly enough, my wife really 'dig' as well) is more benign than that of her Black mate's for comparable White women. I think, though, over time, that will become a less valid argument as Black women and White men are marrying at increasing numbers/percentages. But to answer you concluding question: The very FIRST thing that Whites must do to "break this current system of oppression against non-whites" is to BELIEVE and ACCEPT that the "system" EXISTS. And the SECOND thing Whites must do is WANT to "break this current system". Until those two criteria are fulfilled, all other actions, sincere though they may be, will likely be for not. | ||

Moonsigns, Bleek makes several valid points that you would be wise to consider, assuming, of course, you seek to break this circle of rancor/hostility. 1) You should ask more questions and offer fewer proclamations. Because you simply can't know and have experienced enough to so coolly tender your opinions related to Black life. So you not only come off as being ignorant but arrogant. I don't care how long you've been married and mother to Blacks, BEING BLACK is VERY different from being associated with Blacks. And asking questions might demonstrate that you have a genuine regard/respect for those who probably know more about what they speak than do you. 2) There is A LOT of things that have occurred that have gotten to this point in time/history. BLEEK... You finally hit the nail on the head. And also, what MOON doesn't realize--is that my personal frustration with her comes largely from two factors. 1) The fact that I genuinely LIKED HER, enjoyed chatting with her and originally felt that people were being TOO HARSH in their "discrimination" against her. And don't forget. I have lived with a WHITE man for 5 years, dated Arabs, Latinos, one Korean, one American Indian. WHEN I MET THOMAS (father of my 2 sons)...he was fresh off the boat from BELIZE and dating a white woman...and was on the brink of moving in with her. I met him on Crenshaw Blvd. in L.A. and spent a SINGLE day with him--then I flew off to London. He followed me to London!! (and impregnated me) and a year later...we became a couple. 8 YEARS LATER....she tried to sue me for my book "Flesh and teh Devil"--claiming a character in the book is based on her, which is rubbish! Thomas, after 8 Years with me, has changed his views considerably concerning race.....and now "CLAIMS" that he would never ever be involved with a WHITE woman or any other Non-Black woman---other than for SEX. My POINT is....I know quite a bit about interracial laisons, especially being from an Egypto-Nilotic culture where the entire North Egypt and North Sudan have been destroyed by FORCED intermarriage--over thousands of years. BUT MOON...wanted to entertain or hear NONE of that. 2) Whether it's right or it's wrong.....I have a thing with ABM. Just as I am now family with ARABS, whether I like it or not. But MOON dismisses these intricate nuances of "race" as they pertain to black people. Is it possible, Moon, that there IS something critical in this debate that YOU DON'T GET? Whether your people owned slaves or not is BESIDE THE POINT. You receive UNEARNED BENEFITS EVERY DAY of your life because of your whiteness. And its not just that, Moon... As far as intermarrying is concerned, I have had too many conversations with white women who are married to black men who say things to me like: "Of all my (biracial) children Chris is the blackest... (why?) because he's the rowdiest." A white woman (who dated ONLY black men) told me she broke up with her ex because he was "too black" (I asked what does that mean?) "he's lazy and has no ambition." It is beyond naive to assume that intermarriage equals an assumed absence of racism. Also, you speak from obvious (white female) bias when you say: "The progress that our country has made racially is also proof of my point. There is a lot that has changed in the last 40-50 years. My life is also proof of that." How nice that YOUR life is proof that progress has been made, Moon. Now try looking at that from the perspective of a Black women who struggles to feed her children without the help of their father--and then has to hear you (not necessarily you, Moon, but the collective "you" that is a supremacist society) tell her her aloneness can only be her own fault... My point is that there are DEEP DEEP underlying social realities that you have to WANT to investigate, and this board is PACKED with people who KNOW THOSE REALITIES FIRST HAND. Bleek, I used that quote for two reasons. One being, interracial unions are held to different standards (generally) than monoracial couples. Women will moreso pick a relationship apart, however, ususally monoracial couples just don't encounter all the obstacles that interracial couples do. I have found that in my experience, as well as other white women I encounter, it is almost like there is an expectancy to answer to a black women (in some cases black men) as to why you are with who you are with. Black men are held to this unjust standard that if they date/marry "out" it has to be to a woman who is "better" than a black woman (appearance and intellect). However, black men still marry/date black women in far greater numbers and not every black woman a black man marries is an all around "10"--yet, some of those very same women demand they be answered to. They think their race alone entitles them this man's loyalty (a man they sometimes don't even know). Futhermore, they may not even be his choice if he was single and only into dating black females. I have also found that women like this can check out white men and even date and have sex with white men yet, don't think the standards apply to them. I was touching on this because I found this hypocrisy in your posts--like you have this issue with white women and black men, but in the next breath your words insist that somehow you are justified to share your attraction to white men and not be questioned. It's hypocritical because you can't do one thing and then scold somebody for doing the very same thing. The whole thing is rather senseless. Secondly, I pointed this out to you because it alters how you view me. What you think about me, how you approach me (even on a discussion board) is with the foundation that you are allowed to live by this double-standard yet, black men are accountable in a different way, as are their white girlfriends/spouses. Your "constructive critism" implies that regardless of how I do live, I'm still held to certain standards just because I'm white. While I may not be a racist and my actions prove that, you will still view me as someone to mistrust based soley on race/color--I will always be to blame. Kathleen, Great post! I know you are definitely not a "hater". While you say "love" is not enough, than what do you personally feel it takes? Better yet, in what way did your white mother and black father teach you about white priviledge and how to treat others? If you'd care to share, when people ask what race you are, what is your reply? When you are treated with "UNEARNED defernece" everywhere you go, what are you (personally) doing to "dismantle" this white supremacist "paradigm"? I wouldn't think that you are jealous of me just because I'm white. I don't think like that about black women and have even mentioned that somewhere on this forum. However, I will say, that if someone comes at me freakin' out and they don't really know me, they do have some kind of problem. You're right that intermarriage and certain actions aren't proof that an individual does not have racist thoughts and ways. However, I have to disagree with you about the Sudan thing. Because the average person "caters" to their own, I don't think the average white person would go all the way to Africa to aid the people of a genocide when they could be killed themselves, IF they didn't care tremendously about the lives of the people who are being brutalized. You may feel that is naive, but it really is the overflow of my optimistic nature. I believe that there are more compassionate people in this world than we allow ourselves to believe. Regarding my life as being a witness to the "progress" being made in the world compared to black women who can't feed their fatherless children--Kathleen, with all do respect, that is a totally different conversation. When there is a 70% rate of illegitmacy within any community, there is a serious, serious problem that much of the resolution/responsibility lies in the actions of those creating such numbers. It's a hard truth, but nevertheless, truth. About white women who say foolish things, there are many. You seem to have met a lot, too. But for as many as I've met, I've met just as many who aren't clueless and ingnorant. There are no absolutes. Love rules Kathleen. Though many people don't honor it, I believe it is the foundation of everything we see, hear, feel and touch. Just being human allows us to know that the anger that can be felt in life can have the potential to destroy. Teaching these life lessons is an even balance--we always approach these very real issues by teaching our children that their glass is always "half-full", not half-empty. That way, they won't hate both the blacks and whites who have (equally) treated them with contempt. Lastly, another question. When you "humbly SHUT" your "MOUTH AND LISTEN" to "LEARN" more about what it means to be a black woman in America, what do you do if you listen and still aren't respected? What have you (personally) done when you've been made to be the 'light-skin, think-she-cute, blue-eyed bytch'? That was both unnecessary and unfortunate because it supports the view that you are not truly interested in communicating. Now, I happen to agree with some of what you say about racial double-standards amongst Black men/women. But perhaps it would have been better had you accepted what is being expressed to you in goodwill and table the double-standard issue for another time. Also, you should consider these ongoing efforts to converse with you to be indicative of others geniuinely wanting to get along. That doesn't mean that everyone will see/feel you on/about EVERYTHING. Moonsigns, Of course there are many sides to a story. And, yes, everyone's voice matter. But, frankly, not every voice is as equally valid all the time. And I slightly disagree with you: We don't always know our true motives. And as Kola says, you are indeed a victim of White Supremacy. And the result of that may not be as clearly evident to you as it is to those of us who are made to more acutely bear the brunt of your victimhood. Sometimes we do things subconsciously because we are so rehearsed in what we are doing that we can hardly do otherwise. You seem to think that you are fully aware/control of what you do and why you do it. But I must believe that that is not always the case with you. Otherwise you likely would have avoided saying/doing certain things in certain ways. But we all struggle there. I know that my being male causes me to see/think/behave in ways that offends women. For instance, Kola recently said my "blind spot" is that I am a "sexist". Now I have a problem with that because I can hardly think of anything that support that opinion OTHER than I often dabble in double entendre. Still, I concede that the ladies who frequent this site could cite chapter/verse myriad evidence of my sexism. When I lived in Fairfax Virginia with a white man.... ....I was ridiculed on a DAILY BASIS by black men....referred to as a "sell out nigger bitch", "white man's whore" and "Bed Wench".....DAILY for 5 years. I had my car "egged"....a rock thrown at me twice at the gas station.... .....BLACK WOMEN stopped speaking to me and openly cursed me and disrespected me. There was even one Black Woman who had her little boys trained to call me, "Sellout!"...so that she didn't have to. YOU AND MOON KEEP "over-emphasizing" this so called double standard....but you forget the time actress Rae Dawn Chung and her white date were KICKED OUT of a black restaurant by its black MALE owner, just for admitting they were a couple....... ....you conveniently ignore the fact that BLACK MEN have often fired Black Women from their employ once discovering those women were "dating white boys". A Florida Teenaged girl (black) was SHOT and KILLED with her WHITE BOYFRIEND....by black boys who were going to teach her a lesson. A Bi-racial San Diego woman was stabbed 17 times by Black Men...for choosing a White Marine as her boyfriend over one of the black guys who stabbed her. ZAKIA GUNN, was shot and killed by a BLACK MALE just for not speaking when he said hello. She was LESBIAN. And knowing West Indian men as I do.....there's no doubt in my mind that MOON's husband, while being married to a White woman.....would not enjoy watching a Black Woman enter the dance hall on the arm of a White Marine. AND MOST BLACK MEN who are in interracial relationships....express EXTREME anger when they see Black women paired with white boys. I live in California, which has become a UTOPIA for Black men and their Non-Black wives. They live here as stress free as they're going to get......and yet......I was walking down the street with my former agent, A WHITE MAN, and a car load of black boys drove by calling to me-----"You fucking white man's WHORE!!" My car ran out of gas a few years ago....NOT a single black man zooming by even looked in my direction....but when two Mexican men stopped to help me (and my black sons out)....all hell broke loose...as one of the Mexican men left to get gas and left me standing with the other guy and my kids.....two different BLACK MEN pulled up on two separate occasions to inform me that it was a "Goddamned Shame" that "nigga bitches" had gotten so low as to allow WETBACKS to raise "black boys". I'll never forget one of them hissing at me, "You mean to tell me a big titty, fat ass BITCH like you couldn't find a brotha to raise them boys?" SO....the "double standard" is not necessarily a reality. MOON might note what happened to Halle Berry for starring in "Monster's Ball"..and she's not even FULL black. OVER IN EUROPE...because Black Women are in great demand there by White Men...you will notice that those women are less upset with black men dating white, because there are plenty of available dates for everyone. Even the West African woman with her wide nose and short natural hair is considered...."desirable"...in Europe and can easily find marriage. But in America....Black women are considered a "threat" to the white man producing his WHITE SON...not by color, but by Racial Identification....for instance, if Tiger Woods's mother had been BLACK, there's no doubt that he would identify as "black"...ditto if Vin Diesel or Mariah Carey's mothers had been "black". They would identify MORE with blackness.....but black American men do not generally care about producing a SEED and allow their offspring to be more like Tiger Woods. Also the Black American Woman is only allowed to be MAMMY or Domineering or Exotic One Night Stand.......only if they're Bi-racial or mulatto, can they be better accepted as marriage material. MOON has also not addresed that the majority of black men who MARRY BLACK....are still proned to marry the lightest skinned black woman they can find. She totally ignores Colorism in our community and pretends that it has no bearing on how black people mate--and God forbid she could analyze the great probable reality...that any black man from THE WEST INDIES...is almost surely married to her, because of her WHITE STATUS. I would be more inclined to believe that a Black American Man or a Haitian could marry white...ONLY for "love". But not a West Indian, not a South African, not a Sudanese, not a Brazilian, not a British Black---they come from the most colorstruck upbringings on earth. | ||

A SHORT STORY for MOONSIGNS Many years ago I went to a nightclub in Los Angeles with one of my best friends. We had just settled down at our table in the crowded club, when a brotha came over to ask me to dance. When I returned from the dance floor, my friend said, "Girl, you missed some DRAMA!" While I was gone, a sista at the next table (who was now in the restroom) loudly cursed me and the black man who had asked me to dance. She said, "I hate these white bitches always coming up in here like they're all that. I swear these black men act like they don't see black women when these white bitches are around." My friend (who is black) got in the sista's face and "defended" me in my absence. She told the woman she had no right to call me a bitch when she didn't know me. Then she informed her that I was half black, which didn't make a bit of difference to the sista: "I don't care if she's mixed. She looks white and that's all these motherfuckers care about. They will break their necks trying to get past us to get to her." When the sista came back from the bathroom she flashed me and my friend a dirty look and scooted her chair around so her back was to me. What happened next is what this whole conversation is about, Moon. I had two choices in that moment. 1. Hold my head high and wave my flag of silent indignation knowing that by ignoring that sista's "hateful behavior" I would prove my "moral superiority" OR 2. learn something about that sista's experience that might explain her desire to curse "me" (i knew it wasn't personal -- she didn't even know me). So, I shocked the sh*t out of everyone who witnessed the drama by scooting my chair around to face the sista and saying solemnly to her "I heard about what happened while I was gone." Thus began a three hour conversation that forever changed both of our hearts. You can believe that in those hours I listened a whole lot more than I spoke. And I learned so much from that beautiful ebony-skinned sista about what her experience is EVERYDAY being a dark-skinned woman in America. Though I shared with her some of my own hurts and struggles and moments of trauma from my childhood, I clearly understood that I will NEVER fully KNOW her experience, NOR could I attempt to compare my bouts with discrimation to her LIFE of being made to feel DAILY that she cannot ever measure up to the supremacist standard. And where does that sista go for support when the black man she turns to (who is likely the only man who knows her struggle) has turned to white, asian and latin women? YET with all the justified anger and hurt that sista was walking around with, she did not punch me in the face when I sat next to her -- she looked me over, measured me for sincerity and humility, and then opened her heart to me. Kola's statement: "...when I'm alone, topless in the mountain streams praying. I feel LOVE for those people---only I keep it a secret, because I fear they are against me and my sons." is SO PROFOUND to me because it speaks to the experiences I've had in my life with black women, and more specifically with dark-skinned black women, who feel the FULL BRUNT of white supremacy and yet, right under the surface (a surface which can sometimes seem angry or harsh) is A DEEP WELL OF LOVE and COMPASSION and GENEROSITY of SPIRIT and SENSE of JUSTICE and WISDOM and TENDERNESS and INTUITION and HUMOR and ... the list is endless. IF what you've gotten from all of these exchanges is that Kola hates you, I don't think you have been paying attention, Moon. The truth is not in her words...it is in her voice. Can you hear it? If not, you aren't listening with the right organ. He was (he passed in '85) a living breathing black man whose love,life experiences and ancestors impacted the woman I am today. You call me a voluntary negro... You would not call my brother that, nor my sister, both of whom have strong phenotypic evidence of their blackness, and are therefore, I suppose, considered "involuntary blacks" by your example. What would you call me if I called myself white and pretended not to have an ancestry that is as tied to Africa as any other black american's is? A sellout? A passer? A racist? For lack of a better way to illustrate my point to you I will offer my family's story: My g-g-grandfather Pleasant Breeden was born into slavery in 1824. His father (James Breeden) was also his owner – a wealthy white man who impregnated a woman he OWNED. He left Pleasant nothing when he died. Oh, no, I'm sorry. He left him his FREEDOM when he died. And that made James a GENEROUS white man back in that day. After he was “free” Pleasant worked his entire life to buy 40 acres of farmland in Illinois, which was subsequently stolen from him by crooked white neighbors. Pleasant’s daughter Charlotte (my gr-grandmother) died at 36 years old from working (along side her husband) too hard in the cotton fields of Oklahoma. Charlotte’s daughter Alice (my grandmother) married a dining car porter (my grandfather Nathan) who was called BOY and NIGGER by white train passengers every day of his life. Nathan died in 1937 at age 41 of liver failure after trying to drink his rage and depression away. My grandmother raised my father alone... Nathan’s son James (my father) having come from a husbandless black mother, managed to go to college, serve in two wars and work for the post office for twenty plus years. He encouraged me to get an education. Which I did. But how is that after all this struggle the black folks in my family endured, Pleasant Breeden’s gr-gr-gr-granddaughter (my daughter Melody) was BARRED from an algebra class in the eighth grade because her white counselor didn’t think my BROWN child was college material? (this was NOT 1950 -- this was 1997) I argued for two and a half hours with a white woman who insisted my daughter had to be recognized by the state of California as “talented and gifted” in order to get in an algebra class (I kid you not) I threatened a lawsuit. They put her in algebra. Every other child in that algebra class with Melody was white or asian. (At a school with a 60% non-white population. Melody is now a senior at UC Santa Barbara. Perhaps her middle school counselor would rather she dropped out, had a baby and went on welfare, or at best, graduated and went to work at Macys? My point is, how can you remove white supremacist racism from the equation and place the blame purely on the victims of that supremacist system? In 2004, my father’s three black grandsons can’t walk down the street without being harassed by the police—who are sure they are thugs (though none of them are). My nephews are three tenderhearted young black men who have never been in trouble, but they are growing angrier and more frustrated the older they get. My point is, Black American history is a history of incredible oppression, deprivation and terrorism at the hands of whites, and you DISCOUNT that history when you make sweeping assumptions about who is to blame for current conditions in the black community. I'm not saying there should be no personal responsibility, I'M NOT SAYING THAT, but how do you explain your willingness to paint black single mothers with such a broad brush of blame when you have NO IDEA what their experiences are? And Kathleen... ...when discussing the REALITY of 70% of Black women and girls in America raising children....ALONE. One "elephant-sized" reality that is almost never mentioned....is that many BLACK MEN harbor INTRA-racist feelings towards Black Women. In other words, as one BLACK BOY said on t.v. recently---"my father told me to have sex with black girls, but marry a white one". He said that it wasn't HIS fault that two black girls got pregnant by him, and that he was joining the army to find a White Wife in GERMANY--as his father had told him to do. Another BLACK MAN made similar comments on the OPRAH WINFREY show, to the effect, "Black women are for sex and White women are for love." AND...does no one notice that the biggest numbers of these single mothers are always...the darkest women in the community. It's like visiting a Women's Prison...you suddenly see where they're hiding the TYPE of black women who could give birth to Don Cheadle, Sidney Poitier, Wesley Snipes and Yaphet Kotto. Yes--women THAT black. This is no different than 1920's Black Men saying openly---"I don't HAUL no coal." *** SO when are WHITE and HALF-WHITE WOMEN going to open their eyes and admitt the REALITY of all these millions of single, black, fat, uneducated women WITH KIDS who find themselves abandoned and completely MIFFED at what makes them ineligble for wife material. And for the record, because of ABM being a good dad and because of my own refusal to marry my children's father (who is an outstanding black man)....I am not suggesting that ALL single black mothers face this predicament. But as an African from a culture where black men will stone a fellow black man for abandoning his children and will force him to marry ALL THE MOTHERS and will take up a collection to help him get started financially....I definitely notice it. MY POINT: is that Moon decrees black women questioning her Interracial Marriage....but totally ignores the reality that MANY (a great deal) of Black Men are "prejudiced" against black women, and that those women cutting their eyes at her....are aware of it and are not angry about the color difference, as much as they angry that ALL MEN in this society are collectively....against the black woman...but FOR the white woman. In the course of our short conversation, he mentioned to me that he doesn't EVER date black women. I was stunned that he would say something so ugly out loud, until I realized he thought I was white, and perhaps expected me to take the comment as some kind of compliment. I immediately began to wonder if white women he'd approached in the past were somehow turned on by his insulting black women, and if that's why he used it in his "mack routine". I should have asked him that, but I didn't. He got angry at me when I told him his statement was not just ignorant -- it was sick. He walked away in a huff. | ||

In the black corporate world--the successful black men don't even "speak" to black women on elevators...for fear that the White women they're pursuing will mistakenly think they date black women, as well. And the truth is....these Non-Black women get great feelings of "victory" and "personal affirmation" and HEIGHTENED "Self-Esteem" from Black men....and as well...... many of them FEAR being LEFT by a black man..for a black woman. The "humiliation" of it in front of their friends. ***** A_WOMON: The reason that I cannot completely CONDEMN "Moon", regardless of where she's coming from.....is because I aborted my first son.....because I was terrified that he might be born with what you call "good hair". I also feared that I would love him, "inadequately"---and yet, I couldn't bear the thought of trusting anyone else to raise him. So, at 19, I aborted him. Do you see that this is clearly "COLORISM" on my part? So this is why I cannot condemn MOON all out like you can. Because part of me...has been her. Kola, I don't expect anyone to feel towards moonsigns as I do. My feelings about her and her situations and her presentation here are my own. I own them, and I don't apologize for them. Just as moonsigns and those like her make no apologies for their feelings. I am NOT ashamed of how I feel, nor do I have to justify it. IT is what IT is. I don't weigh my feelings against what a white woman thinks is proper and humble. I own my blackness without feeling that anyone else who owns theirs is by virtue of that ownership condescending to anything. NO station in life, no economical status, no racial classification by anyone will ever make me feel that I am second to anyone on this planet! My mother taught me that things that you possess, positions that you ascend to, the way a person looks, or what anyone else THINKS does not make you less than another regardless of who you are and regardless of who they are. The only one who can make you less than who you are is YOURSELF. As a man thinks in his heart....right? That's MY mother's teaching. And I will always honor that. Believe that. Kola, How recent are the events you recount within your "October 23, 2004 - 05:54 pm" post? Because today I see many Black women coupled with White men (1 such couple live 3 houses west of me) yet have noticed none of the hate you recount. But I do not live their lives, so perhaps what you have expressed is more pervasive than I know. And, of course, people behave differently in different parts of the country. I was, however, specifically referring to an apparent double-standard amongst Black women who on one hand openly admire White males yet decry brothahs who express similar sentiment for White women. Still, I will concede that perhaps I appear to be "over-emphasizing" the existence of a double-standard. And I'm not sure whether one's mother is Black is the primary criteria for determining Blackness. Because Halle Berry's and Shemar Moore's mothers are White yet they and the rest of the world consider them to be Black. Rather, I think how that person views/presents him-herself and perhaps how closely one looks Black are likely the more salient determinants. ABM, the fact that Black women cheer WHITE MEN wanting them...is like saying a person wandering in the desert cheered because they were suddenly handed a tall glass of cold water. You speak of a double standard. But isn't the Black Man almost exclusively the one desire and most beautiful thing on earth to the Vast Majority of BLACK WOMEN? (Yes) And isn't the Black woman the most shunned, unprotected, unwatered woman on earth, because of a good deal of the black men's harboring a Historical prejudice against black women's inability to look more like the ACCEPTED standards of Western woman-ness? (Yes) If you go back and pull up the photos of all the most successful black men in American history, all the black leaders, all the Professors and rich men---85% of them were married to Octoroon/Mulatto women or white women. And Marcus Garvey even wrote an essay about the "goal" of the average black educated man in 1925 was to marry as close to white as possible. In black literature of those times, you can even read books (like THE WIFE OF MY YOUTH) by Black Male authors..inwhich they describe "black women" as MULES and describe Mulattos as "delicate flowers". The continent of Africa...is literally covered with charcoal and chocolate DELICATE FLOWERS, so I know damned well any Mule that existed....was created from not being watered. Black women, on the other hand, and I'm talking about BLACK black women, not high yellow women. How can you not see the clear difference in a Black woman acknowledging that Nicolas Cage is a cutie....and a Black man stopping in his tracks at the sight of Angelie Jolie? And how can we not brag that Robert DeNiro likes black women (and I mean, BLACK women!), when so very few successful men (OF ANY RACE) would choose a black woman? ABM...I cannot hide my growing disrespect for Black men as a "group" on this issue, because the difference to me is that Black men have a COLOR CASTE SYSTEM in place which judges black women, literally, on skin tone and hair texture. Would you expect me to love White Men who are openly prejudiced against me? Why would I love Black men for harboring an even WORSE brand of racism against me? And more and more--because of the music videos, the movies.....the t.v. shows where every father and son is clearly BLACK but the mothers and daughters are cast as "biracial", the overwhelming number of black successful men's wives being NON-Black (or black men allow the media to portray it this way)......it all DESTROYS the black man's recourse for denial and proves that MOST of our brethren are either colorstruck or support the system simply because it's familiar to them after all these years. Notice how men like Don Cheadle, Sidney Poitier and "SHAFT"---when they did date or marry black women----were never seen with the color/features of a black woman who resembled their own mother. In other words, Sidney Poitier could be paired with Dorothy Dandridge (for sex only, knowing him), but not Cicely Tyson--who is equally beautiful, but is considered too dark in our COLOR SYSTEM to be paired with Poitier---after all, those two together might make another Sidney Poitier!!! Finally...as Grace Jones said--she only dated White men because no black men would take her seriously. Like Josephine Baker, she has written that she left America and went to France, because BLACK MEN in NEW YORK were prejudiced against her color and didn't see how a woman looking like her could make it in show biz. WE FORGET...that it wasn't "white racism", but the BLACK MALE PRODUCER of "Shuffle Along" that decreed Josephine Baker "too dark and too ethnic" to play the female lead--so she left for Paris. ABM. You make me sick. OF COURSE...you are WANTED in the world I envision. But the world I envision is simply a "natural" one--instead of the deformed one that black people inhabit now; the one that is killing off our children and distorting us to the point that we can never get it back....our true face. And I was ADOPTED and RAISED by a BLACK MAN in the U.S. who loooooves black women, ABM,and had a house full of them! My dad, of course, Marvin Johnson, feels intensely EMBARRASSED when I raise these "color" issues re: black men---because he told me that he frankly never much noticed it until I started complaining profusely about it (which was around 14 and 15 when I pointed out to him the "coincidental" coloring of all his friends wives---and the other coincidence of the very, very dark skinned women in our community being mostly unmarried and gathering in packs to laugh and fellowship among themselves, SEPARATE from the "accepted" groups of black people. Even in Chocolate City, Wash. D.C., this was very OBVIOUS to me...visually...and to my Sudanese eyes,I saw those dark grape colored women as the REAL black women, the authentic black women. And where I come from, MOST men are married to one. SO it was very bizarre that they were so stereotyped ("dark women have evil attitudes and they're--you know the LIST).... I told my dad at 14---"The black people here must not love black children." Because it was so obvious to me that they fawned over the light babies, celebrated their births more, catered to and chased after corn bread colored women who in a REAL black society, would not be shunned, but would also not be considered "BETTER" than the rest of us. And now these White Supremacist values are spreading to Africa. Slowly but surely. Just look at the POSTER for the new film "HOTEL RWANDA". The woman playing the "wife" looks NOTHING like the Rwandan women....she doesn't go with the landscape. But we are once again having her whiteness shoved down our throats. Like many African women in the U.S., I am boycotting the film. Simply because I don't want to be disrespected and I don't want to take part in my ancestors being disrespected. My greatest achievement is that I am raising black sons who will NOT be niggers. And the fact that their father praises black women and is also very conscious and concerned about this issue (because in our Valley, ABM, we were the ONLY black couple--the other 18 black men here are married to Whites)....so we became OVER-sensitized to it and embarrassed by it and have surrounded our sons in a world where their actual black skin is the most highly prized and nurtured thing in the house. With all her INTENSITY our sister KOLA BOOF speaks with LOVE in her voice... even when her love is coated with rage. My spiritual beliefs dictate/influence how I CHOOSE to interact with people. I believe our (individual human beings) presence on this planet is not accidental -- we have appeared here because our soul is seeking growth and this tumultuous sphere with all its challenges and traumas is a great "soul school" I do not believe the SOUL has gender or race. These "garments" are temporary and experiential -- in other words we either chose or were given these garments because our souls would benefit from the experience. I believe the measure of growth for us in the next life will be how much LOVE we CREATED here. How much HEALING we initiated. EVERYTHING else is meaningless. How many books we wrote. How many folks we did or didn't screw (and whether there was monetary gain involved or not)--MEANINGLESS. LOVE is the treasure THERE--and THERE is ETERNAL not temporary. I'm not speaking of PUPPY LOVE (the kind we give dogs and whales) Real LOVE is based in DIVINITY and it is dependent upon CONSCIOUS KNOWLEDGE. LOVE has a measure of SACRIFICE built into it that requires an investment of vulnerability and humility. I believe that love is born in the love of the CREATOR first. And, if that is true, why wouldn't I sacrifice my ego for love of you? If I love God how can I NOT love his daughter KOLA or his son ABM in whom the reality of GOD is reflected? I'm so tight on time today and there is so much I'd like to write, but I want to share this one thing quickly. I think we all know that our own life experiences are all that we really have to go by--it molds our thoughts, ideas and actions. Kola, I know you speak of black women not being valued. I will agree with you to a certain point, but at the same time, I have not been around that many self-hating black people. I think it is largely because of my location. I won't ever disclose my location, but the black women around my area not only appear to be intelligent, driven and empowered, but are dark AND LOVELY--truly! I was out and about yesterday and everywhich way I turned, I saw countless, beautiful, "dark" black women on the arm of some very 'fione' black men--many of which, wore natural, short hairstyles. I also saw a handful of very attractive black women with 'fione' white men--it's becoming much more commonplace here, too. I know that we have very, very different experiences. While I believe what you say happens, I've been fortunate to be around blacks that love other blacks (for the most part)--and show it. I have met one black men in the last ten years that made a crooked comment to me regarding black women. I quickly reprimanded him, not only for saying what he did, but thinking that just because I was white and married to a black man, I'd somehow "side" with him. Needless to say, he was humiliated. Most of my black girlfriends are married to black men (with the exception of one) and most of these women aren't "light" either. The black women I see around this area (and surrounding areas) are usually with black men, though I am seeing black women and white men together much more frequently than ever. Lastly, interracial unions in the black community are just not the norm (as in any other community). I don't feel white women, or any other race of non-black women are sought out like that by black men, especially for marriage. I don't think black men have sex with black women and save their love for white women (as you suggested). I think it is very much the opposite. Again, I'm not saying that these men aren't out there, or that your experience is "not right", but my experience has been quite, if not completely, different. | ||

Kathleen, I am so OVERWHELMED by you. I am going to have to write a poem about you, because I feel so much gratitude for your "generosity". I feel that by caring about me and my position....you are in effect PROVING, although not trying to, that you genuinely care about and love your Black and African ancestors...and that you recognize the dehumanization that has occurred over centuries...even to the point of OBLITERATING their God-given faces and "phenotypes". It takes TREMENDOUS COURAGE to be you...in your body...with your twin hungers and your twin rebukes. That will be a line in my poem about you: (your twin hungers and your twin rebukes.) I feel enormous sorrow for the BURDEN that is on you...one that you so bravely refuse to mention. My sister Spring (who is extremely light and also the closest sibbling in my family to me)--she and I read a book by you two years ago, I believe it's called "Skin Deep". And I was so AMAZED how much I genuinely felt drawn to your spirit and how much I liked you (and like you). I see you as an exquisitely beautiful woman, Kathleen. You really DO JUSTICE to white skin and blue eyes. And the WORST thing about the "crusade" I am on--is that it often separates me from women like you, because there is no way to fight for my own human survival without "seeming to be" opposed to yours. Abm, why is everbody having such a hard time with the word "condescend?" Below is the definition and the context in which I used this term. 1 a : to descend to a less formal or dignified level : UNBEND b : to waive the privileges of rank 2 : to assume an air of superiority. I meant that when someone who could pass for white volunteers to be black, they waive the privileges of rank that being white commands in this society and, such a person can sometimes subconsciously do this revelling in their martyr role and the power to be derived from it. (This term probably originated with Walter White who was one of the first presidents of the NAACP. He was of mixed heritage and could have passed for white, be he "volunteered" to be "negro", some say because by choosing to be "colored", he could be a big fish in a little pond rather than a little fish in a big pond which was what he would be if he'd chosen to pass for white. Kathleen, In SUDAN when Black African women and Mixed Race African sisters embrace one another they say these words: Ganudu ma goo ("we are much of the same muchness, you and I") That's how I feel about you. We are much of the same muchness. I recognize you...from a long time ago. If you ever read my novel "Flesh and the Devil", you will find that out the complexity of what I mean. When you are an African woman...your children are all that you have to prove that you were ever here. One of my closest friends is the Arab Egyptian writer Carol Chehade--a white blonde who appears to be PURE WHITE. But she is Arab like my father....and she is extremely aware of what has been done/and is being done to our people. She is the GODMOTHER of my baby son and she cried real tears when she found out that my Egyptian grandmother put me up for adoption for being black. It seemed to hurt Carol worse than me! I wish that these colorist pathologies didn't exist, because I believe that ALL WOMEN could have enormous loving experiences as sisters---if we were not divided into WORTH BY COLOR. A_Woman I was on the Phil Donohue show many years ago on a panel of various shades of black americans who were perceived as white by white people. At one point in the show, Phil is talking to Rock Newman (the boxing promotor) who is explaining to Phil how often he had been a guest at some swanky cocktail party and had some white racist try to tell him a "nigger joke" (not realizing that Rock is black). Phil scratches his head dramatically and turns to us on the panel and says "What must that be like? To be the canary in the mine? What do you do when you're faced with that kind of bold racism? How must that feel?" Rock answered Phil's question by saying, "Sometimes I punch them in the face. Sometimes I walk away." NOT ONE OF US ON THAT PANEL... asked Phil to ask himself that question and answer it on behalf of all of white america. WHAT DO YOU DO, PHIL? How do YOU feel when someone tries to tell YOU a "nigger joke"? Why should the response of a black person differ so greatly from yours Phil? and why would you not YEARN to correct your own wayward white bretheren? That question stands as a symbol of white america's great denial when it comes to racism--and who is really responsible for the dismantling of the supremacist foundation upon which all of this rests. Until THAT question is addressed, A_Woman -- You should never have to apologize for your anger. As far as LOVE is concerned, the only thing I can offer is that though white-skinned people ALL benefit from this supremacist construct (myself included) NOT all white-skinned people are ignorant of that fact, nor are all white-skinned people content with it. There are actually white people who are spiritually committed to the destruction of supremacy, though admittedly they are currently outnumbered by ignorant whites who "don't think racism is a problem anymore." I guess at some point we have to discuss TACTICS. Love is a tactic as is war. Malcolm said "by any means necessary" Martin said "Non violence only." If MOTIVE truly does determine outcome, then I suppose the tactic is irrelevant... Just let the motive be LOVE. We just have to get in the battle on some frontline somewhere. And that is the BIGGEST thing that MUST change. You can't have a tree if there's no soil for it to grow from. The SECRET for all black people IS this: If we really love black men...then we have to begin to really love black women. Your experience proves that there are some really ignorant black men out there who are married interracially. My experience proves there are some really intelligent black men out there who are married interracially. Our different experiences are proof that there are again, no absolutes. I remember months ago reading your site and there was some sort of statement regarding how you aren't into "multiculturalism" (AT ALL). The more posts that I read that are authored by you, the more I believe you are a "separatist" (racially speaking). This is where I believe our fundamental differences lie. While we have the opportunity to learn from history, no one can change what has already happened. America, unlike Africa, is a place that is full of mixed-raced people. My family included, there are numerous families within the US, as well as around the world, that have varying degrees of skin tones and features, however, share the same blood--are FAMILY. I find it insulting that you continuously insinuate that when families don't "look" alike by sharing the same skin tone (exactly or close) that they are less family....less beautiful....less loving....less "NORMAL". Your bold comments devalue the lives, as well as the love that is shared between many families and many people (all based on skin tone which is absurd). While you have every right to share your experiences, you have absolutely no right to say that "much" of what we see regarding interracial couples is the "result of black women not liking themselves and wishing away their children." That discredits the very HUMAN and very NATURAL element of procreation--one you didn't create, but the DIVINE did. That discredits the DIVINE principle that love can be shared between any and all people. I know you will dislike this, but I must say it. How colorstruck you are and how HELL bent you are that family isn't "normal" unless everyone looks alike as far as skin tone is concerned, is as detrimental to the HUMAN RACE as the thinking of white racist's regarding skin tone. Lawchic--- When I am in America...I feel very AFRICAN. And when I was in Africa as a model/actress in the 1990's....I felt VERY AMERICAN. And when I lived in SPAIN, I felt very "Black American". And when I lived in LONDON, I felt VERY AFRICAN again. Because I was raised by Black Americans, I feel that I am truly HALF Black American and Half Nilotic Sudani girl. We all are human and will (I presume) be judged on the balance of what we do. For example, I think more weight will be given to Pres. Lincoln’s freeing slaves and keeping the nation together than to alleged racist statements he made or even the +1M men who died during the Civil War. And more weight will be given to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights efforts/sacrifices, not his alleged infidelities. What you say about Momma T may be true. I couldn't resist debunking a myth, Abm. The same things were said of Dr. Albert Schweitzer who took on the role of great white father and treated his African patients and staff like children, ruling them with a iron fist, regarding them as underlings obligated to do his bidding. People like him and Mother Teresa thrived on other people's ills and basked in the praise they received from being "humanitarians." And, yes, I might be called an iconoclast and I have to remind myself that people hate to have their illusions dissipated. They want a steady diet of pap, want someone to reinforce their opinions and beliefs.
