This is so sad and disgusting.
A student at Howard University sent me this article about the fact that the cheerleading and other squads and groups on campus are not accepting PARTICIPATION by black women who wear their hair "natural".

This sick niggerstock thinking is exactly what is destroying an entire race of human beings.
How can black people exist if the genetic womb material of our very being....is excluded in so many ways from our own communities and treated like something to be kept in the closet?
How can blacks possibly claim a moral superiority to WHITES and claim that they're any different than the Racists With Power....when blacks themselves are such ardent White Supremacists?
And why is there no MOVEMENT, no "Bill Cosby Speech" on this---the most prevalent and reliable threat against black existense that has existed since the end of slavery?
Why does NO ONE want to pierce and lance this BOIL on our worldwide face called "Institutionalized Self Hatred"? Doesn't that silence alone speak volumnes...about US?
And how pitiful the black woman in this country is!! To be complicit and silent in her own destruction. Not remembering AUDRE LORD'S goddessa words: "Our silence will not save us."
This is WHY I insist on being topless on the back of my book covers as my mother's "Gisi Waaq Oromo" people....and would NEVER don blonde weave hair and green eyes, which is MORE ACCEPTABLE and "comforting" to Black American publishing editors.

White also said that her statements to the "flashy flags" contender about hair were misinterpreted.
She said she told tryouts that the band requires uniformity in all aspects,
so that for performances everyone is required to have straight hair.
If the tryout were chosen, she would have to put in an instant weave or a wig piece. It was not said in a downgrading way, White said, maintaining that the school was not trying to influence personal hair choices.

You're right Kola - this is sad.
Here's the part that got me: "It has nothing to do with changing your identity, but just being uniform in appearance."
A woman's hair has always been a big part of who she is so of course changing it is going to change her identity. And what is with this "uniform in appearance" crap? We are not a "uniform" people. What's next - uniformity in skin color?
If uniformity is preferred why wasn't the natural style chosen as the norm? You'd think with so many of our young women wearing natural styles now this would no longer be an issue.
Sigh.

Was this rule voted on? If the majority wanted straight hair, then the majority rules. If the rule was that everyone had to wear their hair natural would there be an uproar if those who chose to wear their hair straight had to go "au naturelle" in order to be a cheerleader? Sometimes ya just gotta be a team player. And wearing a wig is a simple way to solve this particular problem. BTW, I would suspect that anyone who is naturally "fat" would not make the squad either. But, the activity of cheerleading has alway held a special place in the inane and innoculous annals of educational institutions. People also seem to forget that hair straightening the hair is a part of the African American culture. It was an art perfected by black women and is a practice that has gotten more and more creative over th years. |

And if I had daughters attending Howard, I would compell the administration there to be more socially responsible than to allow Black women to belittle other Black women about how they look in their more natural state.

the key here is choice!NO ONE should be forced to get fake hair glued in if they don't want damaging thier hair for the sake of uniformity! |

You definitely have a way of balancing out my extremes. You are right. I would not have been angry at all had the issue been women with natural's "discriminating" against those with straight perms or weaves.
But, as for the hair straightening, I don't know. Wasn't hair straightening initially a way for black folks to move away from their "nappy roots" to be closer to white-"right kinda hair?"
Madame Walker capitalized on that and gave us the straightening comb --and Go Head Madame CJ, but does that fact or the fact that we perfected it and get more and more creative with it as the years pass make the history of it-the origination of it-- any less brutal or not to be considered in instances like what happened at Howard? |

Now really, what does one thing have to really do with the other. That seems more like a justification, brothers running to white women because some black women have image issues. You say that as if white women don't have image issues. Come on now, how many black balimics(sp), anorexics, black women who've had breast implants, lip implants or crazy plastic surgery do you really know? Sisters with perms or blond bomb-shelled out okay--but... Come on Abm, really, weren't you reaching with that statement juuuuuust a little?
I know many women of different races and I ain't neva met a race of women more confident than my sistahs. We have our issues but we keep it together annnd, further more, brothah's hall-azzin' it to white women--That's a brothah issue, not a sistah issue.

Yes, Bleek, but all aspects of a culture do not have a positive origin. Look at chitlins and greens! They certainly don't have a palatable history but today they are considered delicacies in the soul food cuisine of black culture. All ethnic groups have been corrupted by American's false standards. Jews changed their names and altered their noses. So did Polish people. The Irish were held in such low regard that were ashamed of their red hair. And, today, very few white women are natural blondes. But bleach and blue contact lenses do bang-up business, not to mention cosmetic surgery. Wanting to embrace what's popular is something which makes blacks no different from people of any other group. They are all the personification of a superficial society |

Ah it didn't take long for things to go full circle, did they? I remember almost 40 years ago now the battles in high schools, in colleges, on jobs, all over that were fought to wear naturals and fros. I remember the people who opposed the practice, mostly all white, saying the same thing this lady is saying to justify the exclusion of natural hair wearing folks.
And here at a BLACK school!
I have known nothing but fine and upstanding people from Howard. They had their heads on straight.
But I remember when I was at U of I, a fellow student left there and went to Howard because it was not "black" enough at U of I. He came back a semester later, shaking his head.
How low will we go? |

I don't think black women at any college should have to straighten their hair in order to be on a cheerleading squad. I find it rather bizarre (and sad) that a HBC would do this.

When is an aspect of culture that does not have a positive origin not worthy of embrace though?
I've heard folks who use the word "nigger"-- site the same reason for using it today that you give for why the straightening of hair became something that was okay for black folks to embrace.
They say, well, historically, it was something negative, used against us. Now, it is something we've embraced and turned into a positive that we use amongst ourselves as a term of endearment.
From time to time, I guess I just have issues with the whole embracing of that which arrived via dangerously devastating routes. Alas, you are right! And, there isn't much in our society that has arrived by way of flower ladden-yellow "book" roads now is there. Why except for A-Woman of course. -Wink. Wink.
A-Woman, I re-read that Yellow Book Road post of yours again today. It's fantastic still!!

I truly believe that black women in America would not be so OBSESSED with these Eurocentric looks....if "BLACK MEN" weren't constantly abandoning them, because of their blackness, and constantly choosing and affirming White Looks over their natural African beauty.
Might I remind you, ABM, that a very popular saying amongst BLACK MEN in 1920's America was: "I don't haul no coal".
This was at a time when 60% of America's Blacks could be classified as "Blue Black"---a group of people who are now nearly extinct.
In those days....the redbones and High Yallers....were the STAND INs for the White Women that "negroes" weren't allowed to touch. Black men professed and carried on that it was just COINCIDENCE, just "real love" that they had no control over.
And around this same time, Wallace Thurman broke the silence and wrote "The Blacker The Berry"....a brutal exploration of that insidious intra-racist construct.
Another popular saying PRE-1920's was: "If you're LIGHT you're right, if you're brown you're down, if you're black...get back!"
Black colleges like HOWARD were attended....almost exclusively.....by HIGH YELLOW, "blue vein" children. In many churches, colleges and orphanages...a brown paper bag was used to DISALLOW (*Toni Morrison's word for it)--the true black people.
And as an African woman...I must say "the TRUE black people" on purpose, because whether Black Americans like it or not--the time has come for some CLARITY on "Black Identity".
Any historian can tell you, ABM, that Black Men's "choices" in wives and standards of beauty...since before Marcus Garvey's "Black Pride" sojourn in the late teens/20's all the way up to Malcolm X's and Huey Newton's BLACK POWER REVOLUTION (in which many of those men, like Newton himself, flaunted and dated white women and placed them above the black woman)......were totally and OPENLY contemptuous of the Black Woman...as a PURE black woman.
She had to be "mixed" (or in your terms, "yellow black") to even be considered "pretty".....as ANGELA DAVIS so bravely noted in her writings about the "revolution".
Even in reading the life story of Madame C. J. Walker, it is evident that Black women in those days were DESPERATE for the "affirmation" and "validation" of their...BLACK FATHER'S EYES.
And that much of black women's self loathing came from the black male's AGREEMENT with the white man that...."The African race has never produced a beautiful black woman." (taken from the book "Message to the Black Man")
And this hatred of blackness by their own fathers (and protected by the black man's accomplice, the "Light Skinned" black woman who fears her own castigation if true blackness were to ever become the STATUS SYMBOL of blacks)....has become a disease in BLACK DAUGHTERS...now spreading all the way to Africa...
as Black women try DESPERATELY to become the IMAGE that Black Men "flatter, praise and lavish love upon".
And ABM....as Black Men in media constantly choose and affirm "Whiteness" as being LOVEABLE and "superior" to blackness.....our BLACK CHILDREN are being fed this example..daily.
In music videos, in pics of Tiger Woods marrying a Swede...and COUNTLESS other black men, from Taye Diggs to Derek Luke to Dr. Dre...marrying and adoring WHITE WOMEN.
THIS IS WHY...I have been so unfalteringly BLUNT and FIRM with black women as I tell them: "Give birth to a NEW son".
For if the Black American woman doesn't give birth to a new son....we ALL....worldwide, are going to perish from this earth.
Because it's the BLACK MAN and his traditional selling out (starting with selling our very own children in Africa)....and now his refusal to even see those children born....
that is destroying us.
Cynique can say whatever she wants. But NIGGERISH, niggerstock behavior is not something you encourage.....anymore than Tribal Vaginal Circumcision and other EVILS of African Culture should be encouraged.
Imposing WHITENESS on our daughter's African hair...is no different than cutting our pussies into perfect little pin-holes.
Through all of it...we destroy the WOMB of our very humanity.
Black women...have GOT to consciously give birth to a new son and STOP supporting and making excuses for White Supremacy like mindless plantation slaves.

It's not like African men don't like white women, too. I don't know how many of them I've seen in this country who have white wives. And there are a lot of instances where African princes have married European women. Why are African-Americans always portrayed and the brain-washed victims when it comes to color? The color caste system exists all over the world, particularly in India and Egypt. Furthermore, there are plenty of black mothers around who instill racial pride in their sons only to see them become color-struck. All problems don't have solutions, and it's becoming increasingly clear that the color standard is a variable that will not repond to simplistic solutions and dire warnings and a lot of fiery dramatic rhetoric. People have preferences because thats what makes them individuals. You cannot dictate to any man who he should want. He will do as he pleases, for whatever reason, and wishing that the situation was different will not make it different. |

CYNIQUE...nobody said that African Men "don't like White Women"...or that COLORISM isn't beginning to take root in Africa.
In fact...that very statement was made by ME.
And as for "interracial love"...let's get it straight....that "black people loving white people"....is a NATURAL human love that has ALWAYS existed in the world....

And as for Egypt...I suppose you FORGOT Caesar forcing Cleopatra to enact the "Intermarriage Law"....a law that made it illegal for Egyptians to marry other Egyptians...thus forcing them to marry and mate with ROMANS, so that ROME could further conquer and whiten and destroy EGYPT.

And the fact is...the Black Americans are the only Black people on earth who have any Substantial access to MEDIA. Whatever images THEY CREATE...become either the Nurturing or the Poisoning of US ALL.
Hence the "Michael Jackson Pill" that now sells ONLY in Africa...a skin-whitening pill that is used with Nadinola. And as of 2004...8% of African women IN AFRICA now relax and straighten their hair...compared to less than HALF of 1% in 1994.
Individuals do not have ANY preferences, dear sister, that aren't TAUGHT and LEARNED from the dominant culture...whatever that culture is.
Preferences...are not "intuition" or "inate" forms of NEED.
And although you can't dictate to a man......you can sure as hell STOP RAISING AND BREEDING SELF-HATING POGO-NIGGERS (Pogos being the ones in Africa) who hate their own faces and bodies so "desperately" that they would not even bring their own seed, their own kind... back into the earth.
WHO can respect a man who REFUSES to give birth to his own son, his own image?

ABM...you always read me with your own chauvinist NOTIONS.
Because no where did I state that black women would get pregnant by themselves.
I have two black sons by a Wonderful Black man--a man that I lavish praise on constantly. And publicly (check my poems "I CAN DIE", "Garifuna, My Love", "I love My Man" and "Better Angel" in the book "NILE RIVER WOMAN").
But the fact remains--whether you're a good father or not---that 70% of black children live in single parent homes. And that your kids and my kids will have to live and function in a society FULL of those children.
And that "colorist behavior" has been a staple and hallmark in the Black American community for more than a CENTURY now--and has mostly went unchecked and DENIED, mainly because "MEN" are not supposed to be questioned about their choices in life...even when those choices destroy the rest of us.
And that at some point.....the person who gives children their sense of self and HERITAGE--the female--is going to have to make conscious Political strategies, just as we've ALWAYS done, to change and shape the way our SONS view us and value us.
Much of their de-valueing of us comes directly from our self-loathing and our quickness to devalue other black women and our COMPLICITY in the blatant sexism and colorism of BLACK MEN...while ignoring that MEDIA is the new immediate power of the planet and that it continues to be used against OUR RACE.
So my argument is a total WIN-WIN situation for all black people...because I am not advocating the end of interracial pairings, which as I stated is a natural occurrence, but somehow happened only OCCASIONALLY when the playing field was leveled.
What I am ADVOCATING is a new "black aesthetic" in which black children are allowed....at last....the freedom to love and cherish the skin, bodies, hair that GOD gave them and to insist on the inate and HUMAN worth and goodness of those states.
And to do so, automatically...without even THINKING about it....
Something that Slavery and Colonialism have taken away from us.
And again...your own Black American historians and greatest minds, from Frederick Douglass (who was biracial like me) to James Baldwin seem to agree with me, wholeheartedly.
The vast majority of BLACK WOMEN, such as myself, LOVE and NEED black men.
That, however, doesn't preclude us from noticing that our men, in general, have become WEAK, SELFISH and make poor decisions....that affect and destroy all of us...and in great part because sexism silences so many weak women's objections.
What other race of people calls its womenfolk "Bitches and Ho's" 7 days a week, 24 hours a day on national television...thanks to Hip Hop and black men thinking it's COOL and makes them look like Real Men.
Notice how Hip Hop's biggest CUSTOMER is 100 million WHITES and even more in Europe?
And WE who know better, through consciousness, must change that.
Our people's TRUE face is not being honored, ABM.

When I say "give birth"...I'm talking about the raising of the children, ABM. The teaching and "acculturation" of the children.
By a new conscious mother.
As the Ethiopian children chant every morning:
"Fathers matter not, mothers matter a lot!"
It's the hand that rocks the cradle....that rules the world.
And Black women need to wake up from slavery and give birth to a new son.

Which is the easiest thing to do.

If Black women are capable of being as spiritually developed as you suggest, would they be fighting over whether their hair should be straighten or natural.
I think Black women are every bit as lost as brothahs are and are no more capable of salvation than are we.

And yes black women are every bit as lost....but because they, as females, are allowed a far greater emotional range than black men and because they read 60% MORE than black men and have a higher population in colleges/universitys than black men......then it follows that THEY will be the ones to start this new revolution of BLACK SELF that I'm proposing.
And it was Harriett Tubman and Sojourner Truth and women like that who've done all this before and brought about MEN, by consciousness, to make the changes that they wanted made.
Women are ALWAYS the catalysts for racial change. Look at any revolution of black men...the black men come from Riled up mothers who pressured their sons to "do something."
It just so happens that now....the black woman must fight for her own WORTH and her own POSITION for the first time.
But it's only through our sons that we can get justice and force this "hatred of the black female" to be addressed, dealt with....and ARRESTED.
And believe me, the majority of African women are not going to stand for this shit.
Africa's level of complicity is about the same as Japan or China's.
Westernization is accepted at first...but after a while...the women won't tolerate it and will sick their sons against it.
I am just your own private African daughter.
And I am abeed (niggerstock), too.
And I love you, because you are my people, and I am responsible for what happens to you.
It doesn't matter if my viewpoint fails...what matters is that I made it public and that I died fighting for you to exist.

It would be great were those who are now discriminated against on the basis of their color would ascend to power and set a higher standard by showing compassion and tolerance for those of another color. But they wouldn't. The situation would just be reversed. Color will always be a basis for strife, and those who hold the upper hand will always degrade those who have different-hued skin. In the end, human nature prevails and the nature of humans is flawed. |

That's why I made the lead female character in "Flesh" a green eyed butterscotch yellow mental patient who has the power to become every shade of black woman and showed her being beaten and disparaged by her own self-hating yellow mother---for being "yellow like her mother".
