I hope anyone who has the wherewithal to be reading this post, on the Culture, Race & Economy discussion board, already knows that life is not fair. While if each of us, if we looked hard enough, could find something that we could do better than almost anyone else. But the reality is that many of these skills are worthless.
Few of are lucky enough to have an unusual skill that is also very lucrative. A skill like beginning able to knock a small ball into a hole in the ground, or simply being able to knock someone out; are simply skills that many of us can not excel in no matter how much effort we expend.
Often we hear about how Women particularly Black women, in this society, are still at a disadvantage when compared to men. We could all argue about the reason this is so, however there are ways women can easily maximize there potential for success.
Holding effort constant (meaning we will assume everyone exerts the same effort) we know pretty slim people have advantages which fat ugly people do not. Similarly, men have advantages over women, the young over the old, the rich over the poor, the smart over the dumb and the whites over the Blacks.
How many poor, fat, ugly, dumb, black, women do you see rising to success in the country (I know someone right now is thinking Oprah -- besides her, there is always an exception to any rule).
Seriously, if I look at the typical professional in the financial services industry -- (those with 7 figure compensation packages) they are rich, white, handsome (in an Arian sort of way), smart, white, men.
Even if you have just three of the above attributes you have a significant advantage over the majority of the population -- period, full stop, end of story.
Conversely, if you have three of the following, opposite, attributes (poor, fat, ugly, dumb, black, female), in this country, you are at a serious disadvantage. Therefore, if you are Black and a woman; you already start off with 2 strikes. As a result, you can not afford to have more that two of the remaining attributes (poor, fat, ugly and dumb). If you really want to maximize your chances for success on this planet try to limit yourself to only one, or better yet, none of the above additional attributes.
Black men start off with only one strike. White men start off with zilch. People always wonder how a dumb man can become president. Simple, do the math:
White Man starts off with zero strikes (by definition) therefore he can choose three of the following attributes (poor, ugly, dumb, fat) and maintain an ability to be come successful. Our current president has less than three of the remaining.
We see that a Good looking, smart, fit, wealthy, Black Woman (2 strikes) has a better opportunity for success than a fat, ugly, poor, dumb, white male (4 strikes). But get the guy on Atkins and an education and homegirl is gonna have to work harder just to stay even.
Am I wrong?

I think you're right, darling.
Although...to my eyes....OPRAH is a beautiful woman, was never DUMB and is now well toned and has been for some time.
And I would also submitt that a black woman who looks like Oprah, Queen Latifah and Star Jones.....has far less strikes against her than a black woman who looks like Naomi Campbell or Lauryn Hill.
White people adore and comforted by FAT black woman. They only really like "goddessa" black women when they're....lightskinned enough not to threaten the GENE POOL.
Just some more STRIKES to think about.

I totally disagree with both of you. Personally I feel that how you feel is how the 'white' man wanted you to feel. There is nothing wrong with being fat (as long as it's not an UNHEALTHY fat), it's a privilege and an honor to be a black woman (old time society made you think it wasn't but who's trying to look like who? yes you get a few little kims trying to be barbie but you have more 'beckys' and 'susies' trying to look like 'kisha' and get with 'raheem'}. And dumb is such an ugly word, it's not dumb, it's uneducated and yes it is a strike against ANYONE to be uneducated. As a beautiful (very, very beautiful i might say and i say it with confidence), educated, middle class black BIG woman my only strike is people with thoughts like the above mentioned. People with thoughts like that teach thoughts like that to their children who in turn treat people with disresepct and then teach it to their children and on and on. Now if you really want to know why the 'white' man has an advantage on us, it's because we are stagnant!!! we do not (as a people) progress like we should. when bill cosby ripped us about how we teach our children and how we portray ourselves to our children what did we do? we attacked him, hated him but never took in the value of what he was saying. we play the blame game, oh it's the white man, oh it's the fat dumb ugly poor people, it's her fault, it's his fault, their fault...NO IT'S OUR FAULT. we have sooooo many opportunities that we do not take, pass on, give up on, overlook. our ancestors and fore fathers/mothers fought so hard to get us to where we are, or rather where we could/should be. and do you really want to know why 'white people' have money and we don't (with the exception of people born with a 'silver spoon' in their mouth) when their children are born they open them a trust account then when they are old enough (usually about 3 or 4, sometimes 5 or 6) they teach them the value of money, they teach them how to save, what to buy, how to bargain and the show them that all their life so when they get older they have those monetary values to live by and then they teach them to their children. what do we do when we have a child, we buy them jordans, and g units and chains, and sean john and roca-wear and avirex and air force ones. they teach their children how to succeed in life where as we just teach our children how to survive. they teach their children that 'IN LIFE YOU HAVE MANY OPTIONS BUT FAILURE IS NOT ONE OF THEM' we teach our children to 'JUST TRY YOUR BEST AND YOUR BEST WILL DO'. can see and feel the difference, yes try your best but FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.
And for the record I see more black men going to light skinned women and the white men going for darker....{WE HAVE SUCH A BAD HABIT OF MAKING STUFF UP!!!} |

AND FOR THE RECORD AGAIN...I TOO BOUGHT MY CHILD AVIREX AND RALPH LAUREN AND GUESS THIS AND NIKE THAT...SO I AM NOT SAYING I AM BETTER THAN ANYONE...WE AS A PEOPLE NEED TO GET IT TOGETHER. |
