This won't be the first time but apparently there is a new phenomenon or music category that has come about called Smooth Jazz. There is even a whole station here in town dedicated to it and a tv program on the weekends--ok so I'm out of it. So the last jazz I listened to was "Dippermouth Blues" (Oh Play that thing!) and "Black Bottom Stomp". So sue me. Anyway, who will step forward and expound upon the phenomenon? |

YUCK! I can't STAND the stuff! It is like a cross between BAD Jazz and BAD R&B. I can't change a radio station quick enuff the moment I hear any of it. |

Yeah Chris, I'm with ABM. For some reason, all "Smooth Jazz" Sounds like watered down 80's music to me! It's terrible. Bleek- |

Come on, Chris, are you trying to give me enough rope to hang myself?? LOL. You can't be that unfamiliar with smooth jazz which is also referred to as "quiet fire" or "easy-listening" and, in its more edgy version, as "jazz-fusion." Actually, it's been around about 15 years. Jazz afficionados pretty much dismiss it as "pedestrian" and commerical. A early interpreter of this genre is soprano saxophonist, Kenny G., but the field is crowded now with some really good instrumentalists who are stretching out with it, e.g. guitarist Norman Brown. This is also a genre particularly popular with the after work "buppie" crowd. I, myself, like it because it's melodic and good music to relax by. BTW, the vocalist in the this category are referred to as retro-jazz singers, e.g. Dianne Reeve and Jill Scott and sometimes Erica Badu. |

Bleekindigo, Anytime you’re talking about "watered down 80’s music", which was mostly terrible via by definition, you KNOW the stuff is awful Cynique, The vocalists I can tolerate okay. But I have never embraced the Kenny G fad. That stuff just sounds like music that someone that is seeking some (of Bleekindigo’s "watered down 80’s") lyrics. |

I don't know Bob James. Najee, to me is a part of that phenomenon. The Marsalis Brothers, No!! No!! No!! The Marsalis brothers have more of a classic jazz feel. Nothing watered down about them!!! |

Najee is a black version of Kenny G. Yes, Bob James is definitely smooth jazz, as are Four Play and Pat Matheny. Saxophoist Dave Coz and guitarist Stanley Jordan are more jazz-fusion. |

Well Cynique--it looks like you are our resident Smooth Jazz expert and shall be called upon in the future to teach and expound upon the subject--I shall resort to you when I am in need of recommendations or opinions--usually when I want to ease up the pace, slow down and reflect or get romantic I listen to Jimi Hendrix, Howlin Wolf, Funkadelic, Frank Zappa, or James Brown and nothing else, but lately I have had the urge to feel (shudder) mellow sometimes and have sampled it.

You know "Howlin Wolf" is a Chicago denizen, Chris. 'Used to check him out way back when I was going through my blues phase. Ironically, there were always more white people at the clubs where he'd appear than blacks. And today's young blacks have pretty much abandoned their blues roots. tsk-tsk. And, yes, "mellow" pretty much describes what emanates from the smooth jazz vernacular. That's what it has going for it.

Cynique, No. Though he is a contemporary of Jones. It interesting. You can rattle off some fairly benign musical talents. Yet the finest, most influential producer/arranger of modern American music was just outside your own backyard, and you don't even know who he is. Linda, No. Though he did work with Dixon as well. He was worked with Waters, Wolf and Dixon, but he was not strickly or even primarily a Blues producer/musician. He's talents were much broader than that. |

A_womon, I'm not "draggin it out". I guess part of me hopes that one of you would ‘discover’ who he is on his own. Frankly, I’m a bit peeved that NO ONE has divined who he was. And I am especially disappointed in the otherwise musically initiated Cynique. Because I can’t imagine any +40 year old Black Chicagoan (and that includes suburbanites!) who really knows Black music would NOT know who he was. |

I kind of had to turn my head......kind of *smile*. I felt funny because my natural senses said to look but when I noticed one had locked onto my eyes I really didn't know what to do. So like I said my natural senses kick in and I did was was natural......got that number *lol*. Nooooo, I'm kidding. Not about all the action but about the number thang. Wow, talkin' about free expression. So Linda, if you feel like ahhhh.....slo' motioning for someone you have my address *lol*. But of course it will have to be our little secret. Secrets are cool, and in a strange way a must. One can't let the hubby know you got a little freak in ya. |

**cough cough** Excuse me y'all but it's getting a little tight up in here. Boy oh boy, all a brotha has to do is just crack the door and y'all spill the beans, droppin' your panties as you go. But hey, gotta do what cha' gotta do. A_women, what you talking about . I don't go window shopping. I have a hard time looking at something and not being able to "have" it. So I ain't into that "show me" thang. I'd prefer to take them at their word and say, "let's get it on". So no, I didn't peek at it. Besides, I've never been the kind of fella that couldn't catch. I'm not being vain but if the truth be told I at times wished that I wasn't the one guy one women sort of fellow. But then again I'm proud to say I am. So all the winks and blinks were nice to recieve, I didn't party like that.......you know this. I guess to look ain't doing wrong or is it? Anyway you fine young thang, let it be known that I'm now single and the other side of my bed is still vacant. Ain't no shame in my game so I'm not on some ego trip thinking less of myself if I didn't spread the sheet just to get a ........you know. In fact, I've come to enjoy my solitude. I do miss all the fringe benefits that comes along with having someone close but time will take care of that or it will not. I'm stepping up to the table with my thang on right. I am okay to look at and have a nice paying gig. I have a house that is paid for and two cars to drive and a hoopty too. I've been around the world so I can kick it with the best of them. I'm coming to the plate carrying something, I'm coming correct, know what I mean. I love to kiss and can make a women smile so, tell them to bring it, cause I'm open and honest and all they have to be is real. Game thang is dead, I ain't got time nor the desire for all that. At the present I ain't lonely just alone. I am however about to put this thing in drive and intend to pick from that tree. Yes sir buddy, it's sunny out today and I'm feeling fine. There was a time I didn't ever think this day would arrive but there obviously is a god and he's working on me, that's for sure because you know what, I'M STILL HERE! So stop throwing salt on my game and get you some....ahhh.....ahhhh . |

See, I've been talking to a women that lives some distance from me and.......well I don't want to say to much but let just say or pretend that she visits this site...okay...play like. Anyway, I've never been involved in a thing like that but can something like this work out. I've been "saving" myself for the maybe. Hey, I gotta go so I'll just let you think about it. I have to go make some money so I can spoil this women with me and all the fine things in life. But........I don't know. |

Cyrstal: ? A_women: You something else, you crack me up.......sometimes. Just picture Thump, Linda, ABM and Zola doing the slide. CAn you get with that, huh *smile*. I can see ol'thump moving that trunk of his right into Zola and them two getting in a fight, right out on the dance floor. And for some reason I can picture ol'ABM out on the floor counting his steps and looking at his feet. And of course since you are the youngin in the bunch, you would be over in the corner or better yet, up on a stage bumpin' it off the floor. See, I KNOW YOU can get there. Oh yeah, I can see you pushin' and pullin' and just gettin' it on. Ol'cyn-cyn would of course be there. She's be the lady at the door messin' with folks *lol*. Chris would be that old lounge lizard that tries to pull the yooung thang with the promise of money and far away places. That S**t works too. But anyway, I don't even know how I got on this or where I'm going so bye now.

Hey Linda, sounds like you know a little somethin'. Let me look at the back of your book one more time.....hold on....*pause while I go get the book *.........okay, now lets see, uuummmmm, don't look like you'd have that in you but you know what they say about judging a book by it's cover. That reminds me, I was talking to a friend of mine and he said you can't look at a women and tell what she might....ahh...be like in the bedroom because some will surprise you and be a real "nasty girl". I said, look partner here's where your thinking is all out of wack. First, all.....ALL women are "nasty girls" when the door is closed and it's you and them, man it's time to get on your job and the only rules are no kissing and telling. He said, "really" . I said don't you for one minute think that all women LOVE to be nasty. He looked at me like I'd just given him the keys to the city. I informed him that once the feeling of is it okay to do this or say that is out of the way, it's on. Maybe I need to say this, from my experences that's what I have come to believe. Now y'all will have to pull my coat if I'm not on target. |

A_womon, Okay, Lucy Liu. I'm right behind you. So work that thang...and I'll enjoy the view. Carey, You got it, Chief. Once dat 'love come down', all a brothah's gottah do is let what be...be. It looks like you're holding it down on your end it good-n-proper like. All you need is to stock up on Viagra/Trojans, you're ready to roll, Iowa. Yeah. I do like a lil' show-n-tell. I'm jus kinda freaky dat way. And I dig a chick that's got a summah dat in her too. To me, that bespeaks a certain kind of confidence...almost a delicious arrogance...that one has about oneself. Seriously, though. Relationships are tuff, regardless of the point of entry. In the end, it's all about acceptance, appreciation and love. If you and your intended earnestly pursue those, you should be okay, be it via Thumper's Corner or no. Happy Hunting (but wear a rubber!)! Linda, I'm a entrepreneur, Baby. So brothaman prepped to figure whether he's gettin' good value for his money. 'Sides. I may wanna know what kinda trade-in value you're workin' with, hooty mack. |

A_Womon you should send me a note...detailing more about that novel "BLOOD" Or something that you're writing. The premise is one close to my heart, but.....CAN YOU REALLY WRITE? I'm interested to know. Because I'll soon be scouting new books for Door of Kush Fall 2005 lineup. This time I get to pick 3 titles and I always try to choose at least ONE by someone who needs a break. Get my email from ABM and send me a structural outline. CAREY.... I sent your book by media mail, so it will take a few weeks to arrive. I simply can't afford to send that big ass hardback 3 day mail for any and everyone who wants a FREE copy. Foks, Sorry yawl. But deeze young foks talk so crazy, I feel you gottah sometimes breakdown what dey say piece-by-piece to have any shot at understanding what dey trynah say. Maybe yawl can help me to figure dis out. A_womon says: "If I gave a F*CK WHAT either one of yall white lesbian chick lovers thought..." ABM says: Okay. I’m confuse. Am I a "white lesbian chick"? A_womon says: "I might get mad" ABM says: You mean "angry". Right. Cuz I think you’ve been struggling with the "mad" thing for sometime now. A_womon says: "As it is I can barely stifle a BIG YAAAAAAAAAAAAWN!" ABM says: And yet though bored, you simpy HAAAAAAAAD to respond. A_womon says: "BUT here's an idea ..." ABM says: Really? You’ve got one of them? Who gave you dat? Yukio? A_womon says: "for you why don't you two stop alla ya fantasizin about all things white in general" ABM says: But I can’t help myself. "They’re so well spoken." A_womon says: "that lame azz white broad moonsigns in partcular" ABM says: It’s funny how when lesbians fight they call each other nasty names like everybody else? A_womon says: "two of you can call her up, get her over to YOUR crib" ABM says: Will do as soon as you give us that info you keep in your hopechest. A_womon says: "and make yaselves into one BIG OREO COOKIE" ABM says: Oooooo! Can we tossin another White chick and make the double-stuff kind? And maybe even add Miss_wysteria...for the milk? YUMMY! A_womon says: "NOW HOW BOUT THAT?" ABM says: How about what? Ops! Sorry, I got distracted thinking about dunking Moonsigns and the other White chick’s double-stuff in Miss_wysteria's milk. A_womon says: "Carey Im gone gi YOU the benefit of the doubt" ABM says: Uh Oh, Chief. Sounds like a set-up to me. A_womon says: "that you weren't saying what ABM and Cynique made the ish out to be" ABM says: See. I knowdit. The ol' Divide-n-conquer trick. A_womon says: "Please let me know if I'm wrong." Somebody else "outed" me about my skin-color, a-womon. (And I have accepted my "house nigga" status on Thumper's Corner.) But, your statement that I am "jealous" of you because you have light skin, too, reveals something. It sounds like you subconsciously put a premium on light skin, regarding it as something to be jealous of. |

Actually.....CYNIQUE.. You outed YOURSELF in your tepid review of "The Blacker the Berry" by Wallace Thurman....and you spoke about your COLOR, quite braggingly, when you and the former poster "LOOK-E-LOO" both talked about the fact that you're "poor lightskinned redbones" who were treated MEANLY for it.......by the real black girls. I could give a shit what color you are. The ISSUES relating to "lightskinned women and White Supremacy" are actual and factual...and I WOULD HOPE that if I were lightskinned like Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones and Bell Hooks....that I would be able to write about that reality as honestly and with as much LOVE and RESPECT for black people as those yellow skinned TRUE BLACK WOMEN have done, God bless them. Otherwise, why be "lite-brite" and call yourself "Black" when you're really just a superior Blue Vein who appreciates, supports and protects the STATUS that White Supremacy fuels such a tedious reality with? It's not your color that makes anything wrong with you, Cynique. It's the fact that you're a NIGGER plain and simple. And that's exactly what you are.

But then again...... I don't understand y'all always jumping down on A_womon. She's trying to hold down this block before it turns into one of those mixed bars that all the no mustache wearing negros hang at so they can pick up white girls. Y'all something else frontin' that women. That ain't the way the game goes. Now if one of y'all dropped into a white spot, do you think one of those would step up to one of theres in support of YOU. Please, somebody needs to take a check and look at what they doin'. This is mad.. ...totally disrespectful. I know about all that dumb shit like "what do we want to be seen as" . That's well and fine but I think in this instance a seat in the back would have been just fine. I ain't saying you have to support what she's saying but you don't front the sister in her own hoouse. Ain't nobody holding a-womon down, Carey. When I said by the time I could break up the "fight" that YOU introduced into the scenario, and mentioned that a-womon and Moonsigns would be exchanging phone numbers, I was visualizing in my wildest imagination that they'd see past their differences. Personally, I like the idea of diversity on the board. I wish some Asians and some Hispanics and even some gay people would add to the mix. That's what makes things provocative. But you and others apparently think we should all be huddled here together, laughing and scratching, nodding our heads, reinforcing each others ideas about "them." I endure the slings and arrows about who I am and who I like, and ain't nobody taking it easy on me. Or do I expect them to. Dis ain't no bed of roses. Dis is life. |

Well since you think AALBC ain multi-culturally diversified enough or it's too black for you then why don't you start your OWN multi cultural board as you have suggested others do and call it Cynique's Rainbow Board-alition?? Or Cynique's Rainbow corner? How quickly people forget that the thing that necessitated a board like this being formed in the FIRST PLACE, was until recently, THERE WERE NO FORUMS for BLACK people to come together and discuss BLACK BOOKs or any other black issues. But you could find PLENTY of white only sites, though they didn't say it it was and IS imperitive in some sites cuz you can look until doomsday and you wont find a black book or anything black NOWHERE!! Now that we finally have a place that is ABOUT all things AA, SOME of you want to start apologizing and trying to Change what the purpose of the board is! LIKE only white people have the right to have places, magazines, movies, books, stories, clothing, models, tv shows and anydamnthang else they want geared solely toward them!!! It makes me sick. DO Black people have a right to claim anything? And then SOME of us get all nervous and apologetic when some white person accuses us of being racist. GO to any store and look at what kind of makeup they have on the shelves, how many white only magazines there are, how many white only everythings there STILL are, and you won't see ANY of them apologizing for having it like that. Cause white people have had it their way for so long, that they are conditioned not to see how white the world is. But they can sure spot something all black right away and try to tear it down, and SOME of you are right there with a steel pole helping them tear out all the boards!! Its sickening!! |

A_womon says: "why don't you two keep on defending her" ABM says: We will if you continue 'offending her'. A_womon says: "I'll keep on puttin my size seven's in her moons!" ABM says: Oh. H*ll no! No you don't try to lie 'bout doze size 10's of yours. A_womon says: "(now spin that any way you like" ABM says: I usually like to deal it slow and deep...with a capricious 'twist'. Cynique, it's not unusual for you to misquote and TRY to shift the focus. No one said we didn't want others to visit. That shift focus thang is played, it works only in the issuer's mind. You know who's quick to uses that tactic. If only Rodney King would have stayed still. This is not the forum to talk race with individuals of a different blend. Shifted = We don't want white people to visit and talk about books without mentioning there race. Some people are quick to look at us through the eyes of white folks and get overly apologetic and worried that "we will be seen in a bad light". Shifted = ............

Carey, I think you had something important/relevant to say in your "07:25 am" post. But for some (crazy) reason, I didn't quite follow what you mean. I suppose I could not follow which POV you were asserting from one sentence to the next (Or may I need my morning cup of Java too, Cynique. ). If you don't mind, would you please distill the essence of "07:25 am" in another 2 - 3 sentence post. If you would oblige, I would be thankful.

Maybe you'd have made your point better, Carey, if youi had used the word "misinterpret" instead of "misquote". Me, along with a whole lot of other people are guilty of misinterpreting what people write on this board. But I rarely quote anybody unless their famous. |

I would have only used the word "misinterpret" if I thought the person actually did that. Now since I believe your spin is a conscience effort to move the focus or shadow the issue, my statement stands. Your post just proved my point. I didn't use the words "direct quote", you did. There is a difference. See, the old shift-a-rue strikes again. |

Cynique, I heard this white dude on the radio today named Jamie Cullen (I think). An up and coming Jazz cat. He's pretty good. You should check him out. I know you are into Jazz and we had a conversation about the white up and comers. Here's one that will definitely be able to hold his head up in the Jazz community. I still say crackers are few and far between when it comes to actually quality of art. But what the fu*& do I know, right? This cat is pretty good though. I'm picking up his CD today. This is my final word on this subject, Carey, because we will never agree. If somebody alters a phrase of yours that was not a direct quote, then they have "misinterpreted" your intent. Now you can interpret this any way you choose. And I maintain that you are also guilty of putting your spin on things. BTW, you never gave an example of how I "misquoted" you. |

***licking my lips***** that's right, LAMBD. You really....ARE....the man. Have you seen my new BOOK TOUR PHOTO PAGE yet? I almost put your picture up, daddy. And sad news to report.... I had to cancel my appearance at UMD in Nov. because I'm just too depressed about Thomas and I separating. The boys didn't take it too well when I left this last time. In fact, they really revolted. They're used to having me every hour of every day and at 5 and 7---who can blame them? Their father only comes on weekends now, so they need time to adjust and to be made secure again. So I won't be in D.C. this winter.
