Here are my takes on the 2 biggest fights over the last 2 weekends. HOPSON KO'S DE LA HOYA IN THE 9TH (9/18/04): Hopson had De La Hoya's number from the get go! Hopson had the power and reach advantage. He harder built. And he had a better defense. DLH simply had NOTHING for'em. The only chance DLH had to win was to go often to the body in hopes of taking enuff wind out of him so that he could possible out-point him - with the help of the judges - late in the fight or use his fair-haired boy status sneak a TKO out of the referee. But instead, he actually tried to go mano-o-mano. Doing was may have boosted his manhood rating, but helped him lose the fight. JOHNSON KO'S JONES IN THE 9TH (9/25/04): Johnson came in so hard/furiously in the first rounds, I thought be would have worn himself out. But he must have learned from Jones's lost to Tarver that Jones wasn't as tuff as prior legend would have. For an ol' guy, Johnson look like he'd done MORE that his fair share of roadwork. Because he was able to keep up the pressure a lot more than you would think a man his age to continue. Johnson seemed better prepped to take a punch. So even though Jones still has much that miraculous hand speed, it didn't have enuff power behind it to make Johnson pay. And Jones looked tired and winded fairly early in the fight, maybe due to Johnson's early round barrage. So it looked like Jones took more shots from Johnson than he had in +10 previous pre-Tarver fights. Johnson knew he would have to BEAT Jones because he wouldn't get any favor from the judges. He worked that strategy to the "T", which won the fight. Jones and De La Hoya have been wonderful professional fighters for over +10 years, though neither has ever been quite as good as exclaimed (they have never fought the equivalent of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Pryor and Arguello in their prime). And they both have been fine ambassadors of their sport (plus the chicks REALLY dig'em). But I think what was most apparent about BOTH fights were the winners were fighting at a more natural weight class than their opponents. Simply, Jones is not a light heavyweight. And De La Hoya is not a middleweight. |

I have to agree with you when you say they were big fights. However they were duuuuuull. Man, I'm starving for a real knock-down drag-out fight. I can remember having fight parties with people leaving still talking about the fight as they left. Many were wet from sweating the whole time....okay, some were wet from the beer they spilled on them. Nevertheless they had a good time. My daughter now has fight parties and she said her's never got kronk because there was nothing to get hyped about. Some would go outside to do things they couldn't do in the house *wink* but they were in no hurry to rush back. She's considering canceling the parties if these make-believe fighter do not step it up. I think a Hopkins vs Trinidad would be a nice rematch but I think ol'tido been gone to long and the fight would be a boor if he comes into the fight without having foought at least 5-6 more times. The Spinks jinx is back but it's the baby variety. The Lightweight version is not close to the "party all the time" excitment of his father. Zab Judah gave him a go but he to is too slow to get off. And please please please would somebody grow some heavyweights.......nuff said. I'll tell you who I'd like to see get decked. That's that Mickey Mouse looking, funny talking Wealterweight, Kosta ZOO. Yeah, I know his name is not ZOO but he looks like some kind of zoo animal. Now this boy is lucky. He caught Zab with a lucky punch and I haven't seen him have a good fight since. If I'm not mistaken he's been jacking around with those clowns like Shamba ......no crying in the corner, Mitchell. Mayorga and Trinadad should be a good fight on the strength that Mayorga is a fool. We need more fools like him though. Give me no talking Larry Holmes any day or no teeth Spinks. Where are all the real fighters? We don't even have real S*&t talkers anymore. Damn, were has the sport gone wrong. The Black Rhino was a flop. We should have known that was going to happen. The boy got all pumped-up in the jount and came out with a build to die for. Then he won a few fights and lawd have mercy, the boy got a pay check and look out, party time! His chest turned into titties and his nuts went south. I don't know, I think I'm going to have to come out of retirement. Yeah, that's it. I think the big draw is going to have to be someone with a name. Let's see..........Thumper! Oh yeah, I think I can get that ass. What y'all think, excitement galore huh. Okay, it's on. Me and Thump and you're all invited. Carey |
