Folks: I'm a black man. I'm a black man in America. I have lived more than fifty years, known women to die in childbirth, had little playmates die, seen little kids runover by cars in the street, folks shot, beatup, cut up, killed. Looked down on more folks in the coffin than you can imagine. Been f'd with, f'd over and f'd up--and done some of it to folks myself. I suppose what I am trying to say is I have become rather inured and callous to the suffering and pain that is part of crossing this vale of tears we call life--it is that or go crazy or kill oneself. That said, that appeal by that British hostage over in Iraq was enough to almost break my heart. Oh, he should have known better than believe Bush and Blair could protect him over there, okay. Okay he was just over there for the dough and his greed got him into it. But boy! They got him begging, and I would hope that I could face it better than that but, as Lenny Bruce said, when they got the hot lead about to pour it up your rectum, its a different thing. Can't negotiate with terrorists! Real tough guys they are, cowering over here with a million body guards! I bet Bush and Blair would be ready to negotiate if one of their relatives was in custody--or if it was them! |

The kidnappers don't seem to realize how they are alienating world opinion. They need to hire a public relations firm. They are just reinforcing the negative sterotypes of Muslims. How much better they could serve their cause were they to show mercy toward the innocent. Bush and his posse have cast their bread upon the waters and I hope it all comes back to haunt them. A pundit in one of the local newspapers noted that Iraq is not really a nation but a country of diverse sects cobbled together by the British years ago, and that a dictator was the only type of leader who could effectively rule it. Although Saddam was not an example of it, there is something to be said for the concept of a benign dictatorship. |

Hello Chrishayden- Yes, it is sad enough to break a heart. And I do agree that should it be a relative of Bush or Blair, they will surely negotiate. Should they negotiate? Hostages are being slaughtered yes , but is negotiation a plausible consideration---considering the situation? I cannot understand war. When I think of it, I think of war the way it was explained to me in my 6th grade textbook. I'm sure it is my self unwilling to relent to accepting that all that is going on with this war is not a blockbuster cinematic event. These things only happen in the movies right??? When I am watching the hostages plead for their lives and my heart is breaking and my finger moving toward the next channel button on my remote the insides of me are raging against themselves because there is a negotiation about negotiation taking place within me! And who am I? I yell out to myself to think about the negotiation of these lives!!! I have no right! And then I see the faces of the families of these men and I feel less than who I am because I cannot decide for myself--if these men should be saved or sacrificed and who am I-even within myself-to even think to ponder a decision if only for myself--on such a thing?! And I become angry because before this monster of a thing, i'd never had to confront the part of myself that considers the word sacrifice in relation to another life now. In essence, when I am wondering to myself what honoring of the requests of the kidnappers would mean in the bigger sphere of things I am considering making it acceptable to take the lives of these men! The wrath within oneself is a beast! I've ranted. My brain storming. And it is stormy these days. Bleek

Cynique: They don't give no more a damn about world opinion than did George Washington and Robert E. Lee or the Ku Klux Klan or the IRA or the Irgun and the Stern Gang or the Viet Cong or the mujaheddin we supported or the Chechens we support now--or we would if they were over here, I suspect. They have been at this for thousands of years against the Assyrians, the Persians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Mongols the Turks--they live there and they know sooner or later the conqueror gets sick of it and goes away. |

One of these days I predict to you now a representative of Al Quaeda (they may have changed the name but he will be one of them) will have dinner in the White House with the President as an honored guest. Remember how they hated those devil Chinese and Vietnamese commies. And now they are doing business with them. The only people getting the short end of the stick are the little guys on both sides--but don't they always? |

Hi Chris. ou know what that tape reminded me of??? The PRISON just a few blocks from the house I was born in near the Cobra Theatre in Omdurman. Every day...you would see HUNDREDS OF BLACK MEN rounded up and yanked off the Police Trucks. Maybe 2 or 3 Arab whites.......and NO MUSLIMS. They chop those black men's hands off...NO TRIAL, NO JURY......80% of those Black Men are INNOCENT. If it's a Black Woman, they cut her tongue out. If it's a black child, they whip them with bullwhips or GANG-Kick them. An Arab girl in a store Steals something, but if caught, she blames it on the black person in line behind her--others in line back up her story.(our men usually go to the Arab stores, not the women, for fear of rape). That's exactly what that tape reminded me of. Whether it's Morocco, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine camps......JUST BE AWARE....that Arab Muslim "LAW ENFORCEMENT" carry out HUNDREDS of these bedheadings...tongue removals...stonings.....hand removals.....on BLACKS....every day, all day. There is NO SEPARATION between Church and State. And in the blood of both Jesus and Mohammed, that's the truth.

Well, Chris, this is the 21st century, where the terrorists have their own web sites on the internet, and just as a matter of strategy they should consider making their enemies look bad by making themselves look better. They have released hostages before. And, yeah, in the big scheme of things, it is "power that corrupts and absolute power that corrupts absolutely", so I guess we impotent pawns shouldn't be surprised at how the world chess game will play out in the future. |

Chris, I say shame on us all for all our government to execute a war plan whereby none of those who make the decisions suffer any real/immediate hardship. I have not seen/heard the plea. And I’ll likely avoid witnessing it anyway. I mean, how can ANYONE be expected to respond to the prospect of having the head violently severed from his or her body? But he INTENTIONALLY entering a war zone. And THIS is what happens in war. I am not saying that ANYONE deserves to be beheaded. But these people, largely for financial reasons, made a choice that proffered dire consequences. Were they mislead by the US/British governments and their employers? Most definitely. Still. Most all of us were taught that there comes a time in ALL our lives when we must think/act for OURSELVES. And I should think the prospects of being killed in a hail of gunfire would be such a time. Because when all the grandiose plans, platitudes, speeches and music fade away; war is ultimately about 3 things: Living, killing and dying. Bleekindigo, Most decisions to go to war are at their core economically based. They are almost always about the land and/or the treasures said land possesses. Sure we hear-tail of freedom/liberty/justice etc...etc...WHATEVER. This Iraqi war is FIRST/FOREMOST about ONE thing: Iraq has the world 2nd largest known oil reserves. However, once a war starts, it becomes a living/breathing entity unto itself that seeks only to consume any/all that come within ‘it’ fiery wrath. One of my favorite books about war titled "The Red Badge of Courage" described this entity to be a "angry blood-soaked god". Cynique, Indeed. But WHY do you suppose the nation of Iraq was imposed this rather eclectic blending of Shiite, Sunni, Kurds, etc? Because forming ONE nation instead of 10 allow for easier concentration and manipulation of the people and their resources (e.g., oil). |

Chris, This war is never told from the perspective of some Iraqi smoe who suddenly finds some guys parked out on his front lawn with guns/tanks/bulldozers bossing/slapping around him and his family. I'm not saying that THAT equates to peeling some other dudes dome from the neck up. But A LOT of those people are catchin' more hell from US than Hussein ever gave'em. And not all of them fall within that conveniently villainous classification of a "terrorist".
