When do discussions/discourses/exchanges with/between folks become unproductive, fruitless and ineffective? How is a productive discourse, exhange of ideas and learning, understanding and disagreement launched? Is there such and animal as the "unproductive, fruitless and ineffective" discourse? Or is there indeed something to be learned from every exchange? |

In answer to the question you posed, Bleek, I will say that name-calling and insults are always counter-productive to any meaningful discourse. In certain discussions which have transpired between me and other parties on this board, I have been guilty of stooping to this despicable level, but I will not shoulder the entire blame because more often than not, I was responding to what had been spat in my direction. When you are dealing with those who cannot control their emotions, then irrationality prevails and little is accomplished. Because this board is a magnet for opinionated people with strong convictions and personal agendas, a clashing of ideas is inevitable. Even so, the volatility and spontaneity that erupts in this mental mix is sometimes what makes things interesting and compelling. I reiterate that a descent into the lewd and lascivious certainly taints intellectual dialogue. Yet, who is to say that this board is not "art imitating life." Decorum and civilty are much to be desired. Censorship? I don't know. |

Bleekindigo, Seriously though. Is there some pat rule/standards we should observe here? If so, WHO should design/enforce such? And to what end must we aspire. Enlightenment? Entertainment? Therapy? Or simple Visibility? I think what is often happening here is you have collection of people who are probably a bit too articulate for their own good. So everything regresses into a contest of how so much cleverer he can be than she and vice versa. And I am, save perhaps Miss_wysteria, the worst ‘offender’. I CRAVE dialog or any/all kind. I feel as though I burst if I am not communicating in SOME fashion. The following might explain the method (& madness) behind what I commonly do here. It is organized via how/why I communicate with those who frequent this site most. What I do with A_womon is often unfair to her. I admit that I am often a bit condescending to her because that burgeoning rage she harbors reminds me too much of that of so many wayward young women and girls I have observed who have squanders chances/opportunities because they couldn’t reconcile within themselves how utterly unfair the world is. I hope that either she matures...or proves me wrong. Carey is funny in that down-home way. He reminds me of discussions I have had with my uncles. And he reminds me that the primary reason why I resent my father is that I after decades/marriage/children/successes...STILL wish he would be my dad. Chris is that wise older brother who’ll know where a brothahs coming from and can provide a deeper, historical perspective on things. I wish he’d get over his obsession with the crotches of comicbook figures. But Hey. Nobody’s purfect. Cynique is whip smart. And she’s concise, which gives what she says added weight/potency. And that drives me and the other guys mad at times. Because, ladies, there’s nothing more alluring than a smart woman who wisely know how to say just enuff...without saying too much. And she’s aloof/smug in a way that compels me to want to mess with her in much the way a young boy will mess with the girl in hopes that she might like him. Lambd is VERY FUNNY. And I admire and loathe him for that (rotten son-of-a-@#$%&). So I often go at him not some much to prove/disprove a point as much to engage him in a bit of snappy repartee. But I think he (and Moonsigns) need to admit he’s got a lil’ Jungle Fever welling up in’em that he needs to relieve himself of. Miss_wysteria is so boundlessly talented that conversing with her akin to challenging some great natural phenomenon. She emanates such palpable horror and beauty that even when you completely disagree with and even mistrust her (See Thumper/Cynique), still you can not help but engage her. Because not matter what, you know that you will utter enjoy EVERYTHING she says. Plus she’s got long legs and a heapin’ helpin’ of hooters. A Ferrari Testerosa...$500K. A Beverly Hills mansion...$15M. A smart uninhibited fiery yet subservient Black chick with long legs and BIG ta ta’s...Priceless! Moonsigns is a bit of the bright-eyed Pollyanna. But she’s a White female born in a post-feminist United States of America, the worlds most powerful/wealthy nation. Thus, she SHOULD be a bit optimistic. And she’s naughtier than she let’s on. I’m not saying she looking to step out on her hubby. But she not opposed to witnessing another brothah deliver a clever ‘sales pitch’ either (Also see what I said about Lambd). But I am a scion of artists. So I appreciate color/texture/variety, which Moonsigns has added...IN SPADES. I wish others might consider viewing her similarly. Thumper is our noble lord-n-master (just ask him and he’ll remind you). I mostly try to avoid bothering him in hopes that he will but for another day continue to let me live. Unless I concur with what he argues. Then, of course, I will use every opportunity to kiss-up to’em. (And that’s also why I admire Miss_wysteria. Because she basically says to Thumps I don’t give a f@#$ who you are BEYATCH, I’ll show you and everybody else my bubbly Black African @$$ all I want.) So Bleek. I suppose you’ll have to define what "unproductive, fruitless and ineffective" discourse. Because, for me, I RARELY if ever find my time here to be ill-spent. |

BLEEK.... I apologize to you, because my insinuation about you was totally WRONG and totally uncalled for...and spoken in the heat of rage, frustration and "hastiness". I have always admired your posts, your grace and seriousness and your pleasantness with everyone...and I do, whether you believe it or not, feel bad about snapping at you. I have also, over the years, tried to engage Cynique and Thumper, BOTH...and have many times kissed up to them, practically begged for civility if not friendship. But they have their own agendas and prefer to slander and attack me. It's become an UGLY cycle between us. Just a few days ago...Cynique (who "STARTED" the name calling between us during the TOURE thread, because she said she couldn't resist).... .....said that my sons who are age 5 and 7 have "Herpes" and that I'm a transexxual--a diseased one. However, because I'm much more crafty and imaginative with my use of language skills.....it often APPEARS that I AM the one doing all the name calling, mowing people down, etc. This is not the case. If you go back, you will often find that the SOURCE of these "fights" are the very ones whining and boo-hooing....simply because they don't have the arsenal to WIN the fights. I agree 100% with ABM's post. It's impossible to read these threads, any of them, and come away without KNOWLEDGE, new insights and "something to think about". Nothing here is "unproductive, fruitless and ineffective"....it's just people with lesser MANNERS than yours and people with less inhibitions. I'm not one for putting on airs. It's a waste of life. As one of my idols, AUDRE LORD said: "Our silence will not save us." And no matter how you wish to make GUIDELINES for "discussions", BLEEK...when you get people riled up and PASSIONATE about certain "issues" in an INFORMAL setting such as this--there is inevitably going to be shouting, name calling and "trips down memory lane", BLAMING, etc. As the black folks say in my country: "through FIRE comes the family". Again, BLEEK, I apologize for making stupid and unfair comments about your earlier post to A_Womon. I was wrong for that and I'm sorry.

Chris Hayden....I just adore you and am so glad that I got to meet you and work on your book. You're a FINE, FINE black man and entirely sweet and compassionate to all people and I'm sad sometimes that you have to see me so vicious and bitchy with people sometimes. You're one of the men here that I greatly respect, although we don't always agree...but HEY...we've got that fishing trip to do. And you said you play cards and have a little nip right?

PLEASE ABM! give it a rest, already! I have a DAD thank you, a VERY GOOD one who has taught(is teaching)me VERY WELL. You are not in my life and you do not KNOW me. I am not angry nor do I have this "burgeoning rage" that you speak of. I am well on my way to a successful carreer in writing, both interviewing for magazines, and writing books! Why do you continue in this farce that you are "helping me"? did I ask for your help? I choose to express myself the way I choose to express myself, as do you, and not everyone falls down and worships at the feet of white people just cause they are white! Moonsigns is arrogant, and impolite, and thinks she's entitled, so if you want to lick her toes cause she drops her BS on this site that is on YOU. MR King APologist! Having said that, I do like you, but very much need you to QUIT trying to raise me! That would be impossible to do in this cyberworld anyhow! |

Miss_wysteria: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" is my motto. I certainly can't get on nobody's case--anybody who will look through the archives will see I have done more than my share of stuff here, and have not been quick to apologize and recognize when I was wrong. Come on, folks. This is good. We are all under a lot of stress. It gets me how on the web people try to act like the real world is not intruding, and to try to keep things cool and machine like. That is one of the great things about Thumper's Corner and AALBC. Thumper and Troy have allowed us plenty freedom here. If I could blush I would. The people of Chicago and Detroit are anxiously awaiting the arrival of KB this week! All: This is what I love about Black folks! They can feud and fight and fuss bitterly and then kiss and make up--just like fam'ly! |

Bleek, did I forget to mention that Miz-Wiz is obsesssed with Cynique and that she cannot write a single post without injecting my name into the text, always portraying herself as the "victim" of Cynique's wrath or jealousy. And, to be perfectly frank, I really don't care for Wiz because she is a vain, conceited, self-absorbed, overbearing, emotionally-unbalanced woman who seeks to impose her ideas and standards on African Americans, under the egis of showing us the error of our ways, a situation that could be remedied if only we would place her on a pedestal and worship and adore her as our queen. And yes, she has sought to "bestow" her friendship on me, but I am choosey, and I pick my friends. They don't pick me. |

Cynique I'm too CANDID and WILD to go on anybody's pedestal. And, irrespective of "race", I'm a DIVA. What else can I say? Color has nothing to do with my FLAIR for the dramatic. And while you may pick your friends....you can't pick your FAMILY. And you and I....are family, Old Yeller. Now go try to remember where you put your purse at. Think hard now. You'll need to get out 10 cents (it's 1962, remember?) for those Jehovah's Witnesses that you like to have drop by so you can get a "look" at the goofy tall one who kinda reminds you of VIGGO. And stop being proud. Put on those DEPENDS I sent you last Mother's Day!

How do we define what is and isn't "productive"? Moreover, WHO said discourse must be "productive"? Sometimes that which on the the surface appears educational may in fact be dreck and, conversely, that which is silly can prove profound. I think the REAL issue is one of relative balance. Sometimes being irreverent, silly and even profane does indeed serve a good purpose. Maybe not at, say, a funeral, though. (Hehe!) |

Chris, This war is never told from the perspective of some Iraqi smoe who suddenly finds some guys parked out on his front lawn with guns/tanks/bulldozers bossing/slapping around him and his family. Back to the original post. Abm asked how we define what is and isn't productive. I think anything that ultimately tears people, or groups of people down, is not productive. Also, discourse that leads to harm of oneself, others, or both, is not productive. While discourse has the potential to birth harmony, most often, it does not. Most people walk away from discourse with more hate in their hearts than before. Abm, balance is key, but who is willing to balance out their view point (which tends to only be subjective) in order to honor and respect anothers? IMO, not too many folks will do that, hence, the unproductivity of discourse continues.

A_womon, I guess you missed my feeble attempt at sarcasm with the Destiny's Child quip, huh? (hehe!) Moonsigns, I understand how you feel. But I think what tears people apart more than ANYTHING else is not talking, it's isolation. Yes communication can be enormously trying. And on many subjects we may NEVER agree. But it is difficult to (to use a Miss_wysteria metaphor) "kill" someone with whom you enjoy talking...even if you don't agree. Because most ongoing conversations requires SOME kind of mutual respect/empathy (albeit however slight). But when we don't talk at all, it is so much easier for that evil voice inside of us all to make our fellow woman/man into the devil. So I think we should all continue to endure each other in hopes that we will all figure things out. And let's have some perspective. After all, 40 years ago you and I likely could NOT have this conversation. BTW: What'll yah have? A 'stiff' BLACK Russian...on the rocks? (hehe!) |

Moonsigns, what is not productive about tearing down? There are negative connotations yes, but is it really a negative? Especially in discourse? You also said: While discourse has the potential to birth harmony, most often, it does not. Most people walk away from discourse with more hate in their hearts than before. Do you think that discourse is meant to birth harmony? And, do you really think that discourse more often spawns hatred than it does understanding on some level??? Does a viewpoint have to be "balanced" in order for another's to be respected? What does it mean to have a balanced view point really? Bleek |

Bleekindigo, To support Miss_wysteria’s points, I offer harmony often is born from chaos, much like excruciating noise often precedes the most melodic symphony. Even life itself is wrought in pain. Thus, we should not fear contentious discourse. Rather, we should embrace, learn from it and believe that our shared tumult may soon lead to mutual triumphant. I think what we ALL struggle with being unwilling to be wrong or (worse) have others believe we are wrong. So A LOT of what the fussing is not so much about truth, it’s about pride. And that is sadly ironic. Because there are few things more liberating than conceding that you are wrong and (painful as it may appear) admitting another is right. And when you think about it, virtually all real/abiding learning/growth starts from THAT point. |

Bleekindigo, Moreover, and no insult intended to Moonsigsn, I find that when many (if not most) people claim to want a "...a balanced view point" what they REALLY mean is they want a "...a balanced [towards MY benefit] view point". That’s sort of what Fox News means when they claim to present "FAIR AND BALANCE" news. What they REALLY mean is they present "FAIR AND [totally] BALANCE [against those commie, pinko, b*$+*d liberals]" news. |

People argue their passions, and this foments heated exchanges. If a person feels strongly about something, nothing anybody else says will get through because minds are made up. Usually, when there is a civil dialogue, it's in a controlled format. Now, take the invasion of Iraq. There are strangers who almost come to blows when debating this subject. I, myself, am so passionately against the war there, that if Viggo supported it, I would quit his ass. |

Cynique, Yeah. Right. The only reason you said that last part is you know your beloved Viggo has already gone on record as being staunchly opposed to the Iraqi war. If dude were a war supporter, the day Bush announced we were invading Iraq you would have signed up with the US Marines. |

This is a completely moronic conversation. The 'merchant' marines wouldn't accept his raggedy azz. Skinny, unkempt, doe-eyed, white trash. He probably wets his pants at the sound of nickel firecracker goin' off. Soft, hollywood, biatch! I guess Cynique didn't put that fantasy away after all. She keeps bringing him up all over this site. As long as she keeps bringing him up, I think it should be open season on his 'dirty drawers'! LOL! |

Well now, Lambd, your sweetie Kola did a pretty good job of keeping the Viggo thing alive. I had pretty much dropped the subject, but she delighted in creating lewd scenarioes starring me and him. No biggie. You and Abm can knock yourself out talking about Viggo since doing so seems to get you off, and it ain't like what either of you say about him changes my appreciation for the things that you don't understand. BTW. I've added jazz guitarist Norman Brown to my mix. Fione and talented and sexy. Yesssss! Gotta run. I'm Viggo's special guest at his Art show today. |

Cynique, I personally would not care that you did your "giddy school girl" tripe about Viggo 'til Kola, in a vengeful rage, pummels you over the head with one of his scraggly cold-dead-legs. As I said before, I am more amused by it than anything else. Although I have yet to divine whether you continue your Viggo-ego trip in a silly attempt to make some of us (AKA Lambd) jealous or you have achieved certifiable psycho-stalker classification. |

Cynique says: "And what would we all do if the omni-present Abm couldn't always be depended upon to put his warped spin on everything? ABM says: I don't know. Probably shrivel and die. Cynique says: "I have no reason to be "bitter" about anything." ABM says: Denial is one of the first sign of clinical depression. Cynique says: "Devilish? Yes." ABM says: Delusional? Yes. Cynique says: "tsk-tsk. A little testy, there, Abm?" ABM says: No. Actually, dear, I'm horny. But the wife will be home soon. <ruff!ruff!> Cynique says: "I hope this means that you will refrain from bringing up the inocuous subject of Viggo in the future." ABM says: "Sorry Charlie." I told you I have a problem. However, if you must know, I went for a ride to the Motorcycle Shop, where they were having an open house. Now I'm back to fool with you people. Is that alright? My problem is with Viggo. Just because you love that white bastard's dirty drawers doesn't mean I have to. |

The boys up in the penetentiary tell me there's a website where Viggo's got make-up and a print skirt on. No drawers at all. He took those pix especially for his fans in the prison system. The caption reads, "Let Viggo pick up the soap for you. He always bends at the waist. Never at the knees. He put the "doll" in "Hidollgo". |
