The Winslows In August 2001, REAL SPORTS interviewed heavily-recruited high school football player Kellen Winslow, Jr., along with his father, Kellen Sr., who had overruled his son's decision to attend the University of Washington, insisting he find a college with a strong African-American presence on the coaching staff. Correspondent James Brown sat down with the Winslows to discuss Junior's decision to attend the University of Miami, where the coaching staff includes three black assistants. Kellen Jr. went on to star for the Hurricanes and in April was selected sixth overall by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft. When it was time to hire representation, the Winslows chose African-American agents Carl and Kevin Poston. Today, Brown talks again with father and son about their continuing efforts to improve opportunities for African-Americans in sports. Correspondent: James Brown" Foks, And for the non-NFL geeks, retired San Diego Charger Kellen Sr. was one of the NFL's greatest tight-ends (the bigger pass receivers) of all times and is a member of the august Pro Football Hall of Fame. What +35 year old football fan DOESN’T remember Poppa Kellen's transcendent performance in that legendary triple-overtime 1981 playoff game versus Miami? Too bad, because the pass-happy Chargers never played defense, Kellen never got to play in a Super Bowl. Because he was DEFINITELY a champion! If young Kellen has HALF the career his pops had, he will have done himself proud. This is a individual, yet significantly instructive example of what it will take for Black people in this country and throughout the world to survive and thrive. If this model were applied more broadly amongst where we shop, dine, lodge, purchase homes/cars, lend/borrow money, etc., we would begin to be able to improve our lot both individually and as a people. Who knows? Since Blacks now constitute over 70% of the NFL players, maybe the brothahs will band together and form a league sans dominant White ownership/control. Yeah. I know whatcha thinking. But at least allow a dreamer to dream a lil'. K? PS: Okay now...let's see if young Kellen Jr. marries (Is it too much to even hope for?) a Black woman...hehe! |

Yeah, dream on ABM. Although it would happen faster in the NFL than the NBA. Especially since the NBA scouts were at the Olympics salivating over the white european players. Was it Larry Byrd who said the NBA needs more white players? Well, they’re coming. |

Crystal, I must, alas, concur. Our pro ballah's proved how 'soft' they were when the owners b@#$%slapped them back into submission about 5 years ago. When-o-when will we see? And mos def on your speculation of the immenient direction of Pro Basketball. The results of the recent Olympic bode ill tidings for any brothah who's got any aspiration to play NBA. Cuz the neegrow purge will be taking effect REAL soon. And, BTW, I agree with Bird. The league needs another overhyped 17 year old hip-hopper about as much as Miss_wysteria needs to be more candid. How the @#$% you deserve a $15M/annum paycheck and can't sink a free throw? In fact, in a couple of years, I 'spect the initials NBA may be changed to the NMNBA (No More N@&&*%s Basketball Association). |

Slow your roll there mighty mighty. The NBA does not really NEED more white boys but they surely WANT them. I think we should consider whos view point we are talking about. Cuz cousin, the teams bottom lines are stankin' fat. Now if we are talking about ol'joe, to be sure, he wants them and to some degree needs them, if you know what I'm talking about. But lets face it, before the league took off, I used to be able to meander down to the front row seats without a "real" ticket and without ol'fat pale face joe doing that, "I'm important, get out of there you black guy look" and the ticket prices/seats were relatively easy to obtain and they had silicon vally for days. Magic brought in the swoop-dupe-no-look-pass and the Dr. took the Slam Dunk to a new level and bam, the league never looked back. For sure Bird should be thrown in the mix but my point is, Suntan has always been there and we jumped it off. Now everybody wants to cry we need mo' George Gobels. Detroit got one sittin' waaaaaaay down on the bench. I think everone's johnson would stand up if they got 1 or 2 good.........GOOD..........really GOOOOOOD, ball players, I mean white ball players. But then again, brothas ain't just sitting around picking their noses with their fingers stuck in their A$$ either. So Charlie Brown may have received a bushel basket of press but all them haters and closet Toms really need is a few, a few more Trents that can do something other than make a free throw. It's equally important to remember who's doing all the yapping. It sure ain't me, I doubt it's any White Boy sitting on an NBA bench. It sure ain't them brothers that are representing black stars. I'd bet my bottom dollar you will not hear Uncle Sam utter "those" words. Mr Busey so'nuf wouldn't be caught dead fixing his lips to say such a thang. Btw, who is saying that and what type of Nee-gro would be ig-na-rant enough to champion such a phrase? I don't know but if you ask me I think we got about 10 to many already. Carey Carey |

Well, all I know is that white folks are who buy all the tickets to Chicago Bulls' games and the attendance figures are steady going down. The Bulls have a scrappy little white point guard now, and their manager John Paxton is adding more white guys to the roster. Whether he's catering to the fans or not remains to be seen. And it's all moot, because a winning team will always fill seats. |

Carey, We have gone from pasting other countries by 50 pt. to losing to Puerto Rico by 20 pt in just 12 years. This ain't the same game that Bill, Wilt, Kareem, Magic and MJ played. We sent an entire team of supposedly 'pro' basketball players to Athens and not one of them could consistently hit an 18 foot jumpshot. This stuff is just plain crap. Cynique, I have seen your Bulls play. The sad truth is the White kid IS the best player on that woebegone team. |
