There is an internet rumor going round that Denzel Washington, on the Katie Couric show, blasted the Fahrenheit 9/11 movie as lies and identified himself as a Republican.
Anybody know anything on it? |

Couric: "Okay, are you somebody who would rather not express his political views publicly? I mean how do you feel about that? Some people are more outspoken than others. And what I meant, are you one of the people who would rather keep it private? Don't make my questions loaded when they're not."
Washington: "Would I rather keep it private? No, I'm not one of those people. I think I speak what's on my mind."
Couric: "And how do you feel about the current political situation?"
Washington: "You know, I haven't seen ‘Fahrenheit 9/11,’ because I live in America. I grew up here. I'm an ex-slave. I'm a result of what this country can do. So it's nothing knew to me. I'm not surprised at all. It's just business as usual. What I want to talk about is, what are we doing right now, today, for these young kids that are coming home? Are we embracing them? I don't hear about them being lifted up. I mean, I'm not just talking about a parade but—"
Couric: "Are they getting the support they need."
Washington: "Are they getting the support and love they need from us? And maybe that story's being told, but I sure haven't seen it that much in the news. Yeah, they're pointing fingers about who was right and whose wrong and who started what and where the weapons of mass destruction. But these kids are coming home."
Streep: "Uh-huh."
Washington: "You know, I have a son, 19, 19-year-olds are coming home completely different."

I saw this interview. Katie Couric irritated Cosby when she asked him if he felt intimidated playing the role Frank Sinatra made famous in the original "Manchurian Candidate." He said no, since the role didn't require him to sing. And it was all down hill from there. I don't recall Denzel saying he was a Republican, he began to stammer and really didn't say anything that made a lot of sense. But, just as I was afraid of, there is starting to be a backlash to Farhenheit 9/11 because too many American don't like to hear their fearless leader bashed. |

Is the "backlash" against "Farenheit 9/11" or the film's creator? I suspect the resentment is not so much against the film but instead it's against the incessantly irascible and aggravating Moore. |

...I think I could...if Moore would allow me to.
But he has so inject his confrontational, Bush-bashing persona/dogma into the scene, it is nearly impossible to assess the film sans Moore.
And that is unfortunate.
Because I shouldn't have to know Francis Ford Coppola's politics to make an adequate critique "The Godfather". |

Did you see the Denzel Washington interview with Katie Couric on NBC
last Friday morning (13 August 2004)?
Not many people are talking about it. They are wishing it would go away
and are trying to sweep it under the rug.

Meryl Streep and Denzel were on the today show "live" with Katie Couric
to talk about the movie "Manchurian Candidate."
At one point Katie asked Denzel, "have you seen Fahrenheit 9/11?" To
which Denzel replied, "No, and I have no intentions on seeing it." Katie
and Meryl were "so noticeably" taken aback! It was so cool!
Then, a discourse (or more preferably, a fight!) began between all three
of them with Denzel being barraged with all kinds of anti-Bush,
anti-republican comments, but "the man stood his ground" and soon
enraged the women so much that they couldn't get a word in edgewise.
Meryl Streep turned blood red and she sat with her legs crossed and her
one leg shaking up and down, fuming! Then Katie uttered the words that
put the final nail in her coffin, she said to Denzel "you see, that's
the problem I have with "you people."
She of course did not get to finish her sentence because Denzel pounced
on her verbally by responding "YOU PEOPLE! YOU PEOPLE! Just what do you
mean you people! Do you mean "You People" as in me as a Christian, or do
you mean "You People" as in me as a REPUBLICAN? She then tap danced her
way through the next minute of the show. But Denzel went out fighting
and declaring that Fahrenheit 9/11 is nothing but propaganda and lies
distorted to support a cynical democratic film director's views.
There's a celebrity that deserves to wear the uniform in movies and I
don't mind at all.

As I said, I saw that interview and that was not my take on it. Meryl Streep did seem to have embarassed herself by making some shallow statement about Bush being a born-again Christian and Jesus being a peacemaker, whereupon Deacon Denzel reminded that Jesus also drove the money changers out of the temple. But Denzel seemed to be the one getting flustered by Katie's grilling about his politics and as a result started to get just a tad incoherent. He never mentioned his political affiliation and he seemed to be doing this as a matter of principle, and to thwart that pit bull Katie Couric who was really pushing his buttons. That's the way it looked to me, and I guess it just depends on your political persuasion as to how you interpret this encouter. However, if Denzel is, indeed, a Republican who backs Bush and this war, then I cain't help it, I'm through with him! I'm just that irrational when it comes to Bush and Iraq. |

So, what you are saying is an observer might not conclusively conclude from the show that Denzel is a GOP’er or that he got the better of his antagonists Couric and/or Streep? Yeah, I guess what you see and ‘how’ you see what happened would greatly influence your opinion about what happened.
Now that I think about, Denzel has portrayed a high number of military men, who are often quite conservative in their politics. Maybe his art is indeed a reflection of his life.
And if I recall correctly, Denzel’s dad is (or was) a preacher. So Streep probably should have left the Bible-thumpin’ alone.
Your last 2 paragraphs probably provide a profound reason why Denzel may indeed be deftly guarded about his socio-political views. |

BTW, I didn't mean to imply that Merle Streep was a Bush supporter; she was trying to say that as a born-again Christian, Bush should not be a war monger. And if Denzel agrees with Bush, then let them trot him out at the Republican convention. Let him stand up for what he believes. |

Not really. But with the GOP hurtin for some celebs, I'm sure Denzel will be approached to come out of the closet if he's one of tbem. However, my guess is that, with visions of Sammy Davis huggin Richard Nixon, Denzel won't take the risk of being branded an Uncle Tom, a label that haunted Davis all of his life, thanks in part, to that photo-op. |

‘More’ on Moore:
You know, when you think about it, Moore is a PWT version of Jesse Jackson. He has successfully used the evils the powerful vent against those less fortunate to inflate his own self-righteous (& glorifying) persona and to fatten his back account.
And, frankly, whenever I witness Moore, the Kennedys, Kerry, Edward and other rich people wax on about how interested they are in average, poor, working class Americans, the first thing I want ask them is can I see their most recent income tax returns. All rich people are essentially playing the same game: They’re just on different teams.
But, having said that, I still enjoy Moore’s films. He is, at least to me, one of the few creators of documentaries, who don’t bore me into a mild coma. No, I wouldn’t rely upon his works to provide a full, unvarnished and fair opinion about any subject. But at least his take on things will be funny. |

I don't think it is a contradiction for rich people to be interested in average poor working class americans. Those are the people that work for them--tend their lawns, clean their houses, Chauffer them about, guard them, pick up their trash, take care of their kids. Those are the people that make them rich. There are many more of them and those are the people that have, throughout history, come after them when the crap hit the fan and they were looking for somebody to blame.
I don't think they are obligated to open their wallets and give out all their money to anybody but their family and friends. I do think it in their interests to do what they can.
What happened to that lady who, when told that the peasants didn't have bread said, "Let them eat cake!"? |

Moore has a very well-crafted image; small town joe from the heartlands, an everyman sporting a scraggly beard, wearing jeans and cap, one-time member of the NRA, sooo concerned about those poor troops in harm's way, champion of the little guy and vocal critic of the rich corporations. And that's why he's in danger of becoming a liability to the Democrats because people are starting to see through him. I think he's fairly sincere, but he loses a little bit of credibility because he is just too biased.
Rich white men like Kerry and Bush and Kennedy and Edwards are what America is all about. Wealth and power and privilege prevail. We just have to pick our poison. |

Whatever! I don't give a chit what his politics are, he's still a great actor and he still puts out a quality film.
I don't agree with a lot of the stuff Cosby says but I will continue to watch reruns of the Cosby show and if he returns to HBO for another concert, I will certainly tune in because he is entertaining.
If the cop that showed up to your house was a republican would you not want him to investigate the crime that just transpired? Maybe you shouldn't shop at the grocery store down the block because the cashier is republican. You know, I think I'll stop eating ice cream because
