I've been reading, enjoying, marveling questioning and re-reading the entry's on the boards for a few weeks now. A-Woman took a break and Moonsigns (whose posts I did enjoy)may be leaving. What is it about these boards that drive folks away really? Or is it the individual? I've only been engaging for a short while, so for those of you who have been here longer, has it always been this way? I often wonder why more folks don't pass through and post. Are they intimidated? Do they read and sense the hyper-sensitivity of some and stray? I am not trying to start no shi!(as my mom used to say) I am just genuinely interested in knowing because the threads become awfully personal sometimes and other times they become downright insulting. - The digression from dynamic discourse to F-U payme is quite amazing to me sometimes. And is that productive? Or is productive discourse irrelevant on forums? Genuinely wondering- Bleek- |

Hey Bleek, where you been? Chillin, huh? And yeah, you are right. It does get down and dirty in here sometimes. But people just get carried away and in my opinion do take things to a personal level. I think the problem is that, in the absence of face-to-face contact, you just can't gauge where a person is coming from by reading what they write and things get misinterpreted. Posters do come and go, because this place is not for the faint of heart. I heard it once described as a train wreck. I also understand that this board gets about a thousand hits a day, but I guess most people find it more fun to read than to write. It's supposed to be a site for discussing books, but while the cat's away the mice will play, and when Thumper ain't monitoring us, it really can get out of hand. Anyhow, I missed ya. |

Hello Blingbling You are right and I think you will see a change. We went to this new system to keep the fools out but I think we locked them in. I think some are going to be missed too. It might also be time to drop the registration requirement . I never liked it. It has the feel of a private club which only serves to dwindle the ranks. And although it takes only a minute, some do not wish to give up their e-mail address, even though there's been debate defending it. We have to be honest, did we really accomplish what we set out to do with this system, and if so, at what cost??? It was a test and I think it's time to "test" something else. Really, it's usefulness has run it's course. Of course the postings over the last year has done little to attract book lovers. The distasteful bantor is distressing. How can I invite a person to join us? We are really dealing with two different issues, but they are related, they sure are. |

Bleek: I think you got several things operating here. One is the nature of this medium, which has a tendency to induce one to skim instead of reading in depth, jump to conclusions quickly and reply before anything has been well thought out. I know sometimes , after getting into a back and forth thang with somebody, a poster has gone back and looked at what he posted and said--" What the hell was I thinking?" It has almost even happened to me--once. Another thing operating is that most people are posting under aliases. I post on other lists where you use aliases only and I have posted things there to people I would not say to a person unless I was ready to start a fistfight or shootout. I think that when you are not speaking to someone direct, either or in person or on the phone, and they don't really know who you are you tend to give vent to emotions and words you would not ordinarily. I have found that people on the net are more sensitive than people in other mediums--call in talk shows, barrooms, streetcorners. Add in that this site attracts readers, who are probably more senstive than most, you get situations where feelings can get hurt. It has almost even happened to me--once or so. I think. Anyway, you ain't seen nothing. We had some shootouts up in here that have made anything you have seen look like pillowfights--I was never part of them, of course. |

Thank you all for the insight. I don't know. I guess it's easier to be reckless when you don't have a face. After reading and considering what you said, I thought--well it's a problem that is not really that complicated, just chock full of enduring elements. Misinterpretations, mis-readings, sensitivities, personalities, lifestyles, diverse communicabilities, Understandings, misunderstandings, mentalities, emotions, behaviors...then I thought, well maybe it is slightly complicated. But, if these elements as it is, are ever-enduring and burgeoning always, then what is the answer? These elements will always be relevant, obvious and necessarily considered in spheres such as this. What to do? What to do? Tolerate? Hold Accountable? Disregard? Take flight? Whatever the crisis, whatever the solution--it is what it is. And...I will continue to filter out the cantankerous chaos for the reward -the madness of evocative discourse. Thanks again for the insight. Bleek-

Hello BlingBling As usual Chris is way off base....... Noooo, he right, we all have shown our ass. I got a sunburn one year. There are a few that can tell you exactly why some/others don't post. See, Thump and Troy get e-mails by the tons from people crying about the board. Oh yeah, you should read some of them. Frequently they read a few and then they start hitting the delete button because obviously they've heard it all before. But you are correct, the numbers that actually do post have become considerably smaller but that's not because of any one group of individuals. Lets face it, we are black people and we will stand on a corner eating a chicken leg while watching someone sell dope on one corner while another heated exchange is happening on the other side of the street. It's all about substance, if you engage someone in conversation that's of mutual interest to them they will join in. However, although something my be amusing to them and they may watch or in this case read, they are hesitant to join in because it's none of their business. You feel me? Just like that fight or drug sale, we may watch with great interest but we will also turn and walk away like it's yesterdays news. See, they are not vested in "that", it's amusing as I've said but we learned not to get involved with thangs that are not our business. Consequently, veiwers my tune in to watch others make fools of themselves, they also want no part of it. I know you're familiar with the phrase, "believing in your own press clippings". Well, it can happen here too. If a postee's reply is filled with "bravo" and "great post", that can provide the postee with fuel to say "they love me, and what follows is more of the same. Those that do not approve are less prone to jump in with their remarks of disdain. Lets make no misstake about it, they will laugh and egg you on but you will not see them wallow in the fray. I'd bet my last dollar that if the posts where geared more towards the original intent of the board more would post. I'm not saying they would be more entertaining but nevertheless there would be more of them, more would post. But don't get it twisted, we've had some simply great conversations behind books and their storylines and or authors. Yes sir buddy, fantastic conversation. But come on, what can you say behind, "booty this" and "booty that". It's hard to jump in when the conversation is talking about sticken, licken, and pokin' something. HUH, what.....I know you hear me. Think about it and kick it around some. Although some are going to disagree, but that's the nature of the beast. Those that talk a lot thinks everyone wants to hear it and I'm guilty too. Carey Carey |

Carey: Yes, I feel you. I like the creativity in both posts. You painted a picture! I could see the drug deal, me on the corner with the chicken;) and the heated exchange on the other side of the street. I've witnessed the scene too many times before--the walking away cuz it ain't my buisness... I know the image you speak of Carey!! And yes, growing up, it was practically beaten into my skin to, "STAY OUTTA GROWN FOLKS BIZNEZZ CHILE--GONE SUMWHERE!!" I hear you Carey, I do. And the "***off in the distance we hear***" post--put me in stitches!!!!! *****black man can be seen running down a hallway, holding up his pants while papers are flying from his arms in every direction***** THAT WAS FUNNY!!!!!!

I aim to please young man..??? ahhh or is it young lady. That's one of the things I like about this place. Everyone brings something different to the table. Some bring humor while others bring information. Some make us reach for our dictionarys ***cough Ab..cough cough M***. Nevertheless none of us has it all. If you've read many of my posts you've obviously seen that my spelling is awful, just dredeful....( I jacked that one didn't I *smile*). I also frequently forget about paragraphs, I just throw S(*t all together. I know some of my posts have people shaking their heads thinking, what the hell was that? Anyway, just as we have different shades of blackness we have differences. That the beauty of our people and this board. No one can be an A_Womon or a Yukio, and when they aren't around they are missed. But no one is bigger than the house......Thump maybe but hey, this spot is the shit. Thanks for the compliments, lets hear some more . Ain't I terrible. Sargent at Arms Carey how do you like that Lambchop & ABM *lol*. |

Bleekindigo, I think the others have provided most of what is required to address your topic. So I won’t be adding much in that regard (because I pretty much agree with everything they said). Though, I will add that I think most of the people who frequently post on this site demonstrate a firm if not impressive command of the operative grammar/composition skills. And we all here appear to be able to clearly articulate real/definite (if not also kooky, contentious, niave, etc...) viewpoints. Thus, I suspect that a lot of people who visit this site fear they may be lacking in those respects and, thus, fear their shortcomings being easily made manifest here. I recall a little while back that someone boldly posted a proclamation that they want to be writer. Yet her post was fraught with frivolous spelling/grammar errors. And a few of us made note of that. I am not sure if that person has posted here again. Now, I also must make somewhat personal comments. Because I know that I am at least as responsible for any recent brohahahs that may have frighten the timid away (And, well, maybe Thumper will take it light on me when he gets back...hehe!). It is clear Lambd and I bring the 'fratboy' element out of each other, which I agree we have both allowed to spin out of control now-n-again. Lambd reminds me of a cousin of mine that always manages to be the funniest guy in any room. I hate and love that about him. (that lucky, cottonpickin, smart@$$, @#$%sucker, @#$%&!) But that’s the kind of thing that happen among men. If we we all met in person, what would probably happen is Lambd and I would be somewhere tipping shots of J-Dawg, talking smack over dominos and cards, and secretly judging whether A_womon or Moonsigns had the biggest butt. Yawl know that’s how guys are! However, I would hope that an observer would look at the totality of our contributions to this site, before they make sweeping proclamations about who/what is doing who/what. Because I think I, Lambd, you, Chris, Carey, Cynique(& Viggo), Yukio, Sisgal, A_womon, newbie Rashena and even our friendly neighborhood White girl Moonsigns bring an informative and entertain level of discourse to this site. Thus, I hope those who lurk might join in the fray. But make sure you don’t wear your Sunday’s Best. Because it can get a ‘funky’ up in hur. Carey/Cynique/Chris, I think you have been around here the longest. I recall the Board was designed differently (+3 years ago?). It had sort of an ever-evolving/extending tree-like style. Do you think the change in the Board itself, as well as the recent security restrictions, have contributed to a general lessening of posts? Carey says: "It's hard to jump in when the conversation is talking about sticken, licken, and pokin' something." ABM says: "I guess it depends on where you grew up. Cuz, playah, in my ol’ nape of the neck, those where the very BEST times for foks to "jump in". But hey. You kinda had to BE there. Carey says: "...black man can be seen running down a hallway, holding up his pants while papers are flying from his arms in every direction..." ABM says: Sorry Lambd. Carey told me he wouldn’t tell anybody else the truth about why you had to leave. |

I think the problem some people have with this site is that it gradually went from a place to discuss books to a free-for-all. But controversial subjects seem to be what inspires the most posts. BTW, I don't know if I could be considered a veteran here. This board was in existence a few years before I just happened upon the scene. |

Cynique, I find what you say interesting. Because when I first started posting on the site, I tried to focus on books. And I would either get little/no response. Rashena must have done something to catch your eye for you to have her back this early in the cyber-relationship. Except for me and maybe one other person, you usually fly solo. I'm gonna have to pay more attention to this Rashena person...I'll have to think of some interesting ways to spell her name first. How about two 'R's? RRashena, or RRasheena? How about the ever-ghetto "Shee-shee"? We could shorten it to "Sheena". I got a cousin named Ra-Ra. Do you like that? It don't matter, cuz I aint gotcha back, and I don't like you becuz you takin' up space in my woman's peripheral that's supposed to be reserved for me...Dammit! What's up, y'all? Yes, my name is Rashena, I am in NYC. I love to read almost EVERYTHING, and am a bibliophile to the fullest. I have at least a thousand books in storage that I will NEVER get rid of, I hope to have a magnificent library in my estate one day and then I'll leave them to my grandchildren. LOL! I have been reading a lot of business books now, especially dealing with publishing. I go to NYU's Center for Publishing now. I love the book industry, recent changes have been exciting and lucrative for everyone, though the quality leaves a lot to be desired. That's where I plan to come in.

You guys are crazy, I'm sure of it now. LMAO I haven't read The Life of Pi, but I have heard about it. Right now I'm reading The Emperor of Ocean Park, and I'm really enjoying it! And NO WAY am I going to add to the mediocrity, I don't want to be a brack dealer (books that are flipped like rocks). I want to publish all kinds of books.....I will give more details soon.

Hey Abm, doesn't RRasheena sound all intelligent and scrumptious and chit? Couldn't you just spread her on a Ritz? Like Andy Griffin used to say, "Mmmmm! Good Cracker!" |

Rah-Rah, don't worry about it dear, Lambd just does not know when to turn it off. Yes, there is at this time less than 15 "regular" postee's however there are probably 25-40 regular members that post when they feel they have something they would like to share with us. The "regulars" post on a daily bases, their reasoning varys. Some are retired, some work at home and the board has become a sort of meeting place much like a cafe or coffee shop. The conversations run the gammit as you've most certainally have witnessed. Some have a tendency to go over the top........way over the top. The moderator of the site is a very nice fellow who goes by the name of Thumper. A few have had a good ol'time playing around with his name as of late because he's away on vacation. As someone mentioned, he's due to return any day now and there's going to be a shakeoout of sorts. So dear, post away. You will recieve a reply in most cases to whatever you care to talk about. Although we clown around, their are some very intelligent folks that visit this site. You wouldn't always notice that depending on when you visited but they are out there. Welcome! Some have been members since 1998 and others have just landed. So type away and you will be rewarded, you can bet on that. |

Rashena, Don't sweat it, Baby Doll. It's hard, right now. But it'll get nice and easy real soon (Bet that's not the first time a playah has used THAT line on you. Is it?). Consider the trite, but true clique: "Whatever doesn't kill you, will make you stronger!" If you can hold up your end up in hur, those pencil-neck geeks you hang around with in the book biz will be a slice ah warm double-chocolate cake. |

And you'll be especially outstanding, Rashena, if you don't use "clique" when you mean "cliche." (Just an example of what you can expect, girlfriend. LOL) |

Bring it on, babe. You obviously don't play this game too well since you don't know the difference between "clique" and "cliche," both of which are French words. So forget the "English" teacher reference. |

Cynique, Many if not most English words have non-English origins. That doesn't mean that they are not now considered to be English words, even if they are still being used within their country of origin. |

Most English words have their roots in another language and are derived from foreign words, but "cliche" and "clique" are not English words. Their spelling and pronunciation remain French. |

Critique, Indeed, you make a compelling argument. So then, by your strict definition of what are and/not "English" words, the following worlds would not be taught by an "English Teacher" as well: Aqua [Latin] Basis [Latin] Pantheon [Latin] Negro [Spanish] Juvenile [French] Velocity [French] Espionage [French] Yes? |

Oh come, on. Words don't have to be "taught" by an English teacher, Abm. How do you teach somebody a word? My point is, is that the words in quesion are not anglocized. They are in their pure form. |

Fair enuff, Mon Cheri [French phrase for "My Love"...<wink!>]. Your point is taken and accepted. Although, at some point, "somebody" had to "...teach somebody [else] us a word". Otherwise, what would compel ANY of us to know what to 'say' and 'write'? |
