What is it in folk that just love a good slogan? A good speech? What makes them cheer and hoot and holler? I think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I think Of Carey last night, I think of Malcolm X, I think of Farrakhan, I think of Bush-and I think of Bin Laden and the speeches he might be making to his followers and how they probably ravage every word and I wonder why? What in us craves word in the form of speech? Oration? What in us does it satisfy? I woke up at about 9:30 last night to Carey yelling, "Help is on the waaaay" and I heard some of his speech and I heard the people cheer and I was almost lulled in!!! And I thought my God, the power of the word!! |

Bleekindigo, Well, at the risk of being religious, GOD created the by speaking the words "Let there be light!" Almost everyone, almost everything was preceeded or accompanied by an utterance of some type. Such is as primordial and yet as cosmic as the universe itself. |

Oh, BTW, I think this is a GREAT slogan. And if it is used the right way, it could indeed prove helpful in the the waining days of Kerry's bid for the presidency. |

People do become mesmerized by catch phrases repeated over and over. A lot of this has its origin in the "call-and-response" rituals that take place in black churchs where that good ol time religion is still preached. |

Given how frightened so many of us are about what is happening in this country/world, many of us might gravitate to the whole 'rescuing' element of the slogan. And Kerry's warhero status adds a genuine weight to that. I certainly don't suggest this will win the election for him. But it might make some people stop and consider what is the TRUE measure of the man who is currently in office versus the guy who's vying for his gig. Also, it sure wouldn't hurt Kerry to get the white-hot Barak Obama to help stump for 'em. Oh...and now if Kerry could just get handle on the kooky wife of his. |

Baby, that chick was hyer thanah space shuttle. Just goes to show you that a billion bucks can't by someone class and self-control. If Kerry loses to Bush in a close race, he very well may his darling Teresa ("The Terrible") to blame. |

You know that Teresa is Portuguese and grew up in a revolutionary environment and is very cosmopolitian. She'a fiery multi-linguist Latina, and she had to have something going for her to have snared her first husband who was heir to the Heinz food congolmerate worth zillions of dollars. I like her, and so do a lot of Kerry followers. She'd certainly be a refreshing change from that "Stephord Wife" Bush is married to. |

Cynique, I agree Teresa makes for interesting media copy, though I think your view of her history/background is a bit hyperbolic. And of course Kerry's minions love her. Hell, her money helped keep this whole enterprise afloat as Kerry was getting trounced by Edwards and Dean at the beginning of the primaries. But I think her act is, among the larger portion of the American electorate, more likely to lose votes for John that win them for him. Also, I find it weirdly discomforting to witness a woman continue to pine for a dead husband while her living husband is trying to become the most powerful man on Earth. |

H-y-p-e-r-b-o-l-i-c. Got it. Off I go to dictionary.com again. Sheesh! Boy, Abm, I dunno which is worse. I need a translator when reading your posts, Cynique's posts, Chrishayden, and oh my God! I won't get started on the vocabulary that Yukio is carrying around. I'll bet he's got a melon the size of Australia. What a brain on that dude, right? Sometimes my students tell me the words I use are over their heads. They'd get a headache reading some of the inflated verbage of you guys. Verbage. Is that right? Now you got me going to dictionary dot com for my own crap... |

Lambd, That is a "headache" that most of them probably need to endure. Part of the reason why so much of our art is crappy is that most of our (so-called) artists have too little intellectual capital from which to draw. Frankly, they, you and myself should be compelled to review a dictionary, thesaurus and/or encyclopedia at least once daily. Those of us who don't should be made to feel ashamed of ourselves. And if any of your student who decry that the words you use are "over their heads" have any artistic, especially literary, aspirations, they should be b@+&$ed slapped with a Merriam-Webster. |

Lambd, Sorry if I were a bit heavy-handed. But I tire of witnessing (I'll presume Black) people reveling in ignorance. These people who enjoy being dumb are the same very same people who b@+&$-n-moan when other people use "inflated verbiage" to deceive, manipulate and imprison them and then they plead for other people who wield "inflated verbiage" to rescue them, only to yet again be hoodwinked. Virtually every great deed, be it benevolent or malevolent, that has ever occurred was preceded by some inspiring, motivating utterance of some sort. So tell your young charges that if they want to be strong they should luxuriate within the blessings of a dictionary their every waking day. Because every word can open a doorway to boundless power. |

Ahem...Thank you, Abm...I think I got the message. I'll get back to you in a couple of days. I need time to ...ahem... ingest some of what you said. Still thank you for your comments...I think? Just picking, sir. I enjoy reading the posts of the intellectuals here on the board. It keeps me sharp, and I usually use some of the 'inflated verbiage' for my on pontificating. Iz dat right? |
