So, did Kerry sew it up by picking Edwards? Did this help him or hurt him? Is there anybody else he should have given the nod?

It looks like Mike Ditka may enter the Senate race v Obama. In any other country but America I would be laughing. Does Iron Mike have a shot?

I think Edwards was as good choice for VP and will help the Dem ticket.
Mike Ditka has an awful lot of beer-swilling blue collar fans who might vote for him should he choose to give up all of his lucrative endorsements and make a run for the senate. But, I predict cooler heads will prevail, and Obama emerge the victor in November.

Thank goodness. I have gotten nauseous enough for one year. Was it ridiculous? Shwartzenegger. Jessie "The Body" Ventura. Fred Grandy. Sonny Bono. George Murphy. Ronald Reagan.

There are several states, this one included, in which Rush Limbaugh could get elected to any office he wanted. Even after the dope scandals and his impending divorce.

Let's just hope they can't get to Bill O'Rielly.

Cynique,
I am relieved for you Illinoisians (especially Blacks). Because I think Illinois has <20%statewide AA population. So, as insane as it seems, I think a White Ditka could have defeated the Black Obama.

A couple years ago and I would have considered us both insane--but this is America in the 21st Century--before its all over I expect to see corporations, cartoon characters and at least one animal elected to the Presidency.

Chris, when it comes to bizarre presidential candidates of the future, you forgot to mention the most prominent one: Hillary Clinton!

Abm, I don't think Ditka would've had a prayer. His constituency was strictly local. Those hicks in downstate Illinois don't relate to him. Obama seems to have statewide support, however. He's paid his political dues.

Cynique:

I would have thought as a rabid, no hold barred, take no prisoners bra burning women's libber you would fairly swoon at the thought of a Clinton presidency.

It's something, though, isn't it? All those New York Democratic women talking about not having her speak at the convention was a slap to women. How is she supposed to be the representative of all women?

You know, I ain't a conservative and I ain't a Republican, but I hate those awful Clintons. 60's radlibs that have sold out but still want to talk that smizzack--they ought to be Republicans like they really are--

Bill Clinton has destroyed the Democratic Party, and all I can attribute his attraction among blacks to is the ugly tendency some of us have to go to jelly when a white man deigns to pat them on the head.

There will be a woman president one day, but it will not be her. Why? She is too divisive-- a lightning rod. Her opposition hates her too much going in--the Republican Right fairly salivates at the idea of taking her on, they want her. If the Democrats ever put her on a ticket it will be worse than Mondale Ferraro!

Plus, can you see Bill as the First Lady, lurking around the oval office? I bet he would be in there doing threesomes if they got in again.

Well, now, Chris. Would it come as a surprise to you that I am not a radical woman's libber? In fact, I wouldn't have feminist leanings at all, if men would just step up and take charge. And I certainly don't think that anything a man can do, a woman can do. I don't agree with women being in combat, with them being firemen or construction workers or, as policemen, that they should be sitting in breakrooms nursing their babies.
Hilary Clinton doesn't evoke any particular emotion in me. I can take her or leave her. As for Bill Clinton, I'd like to hear what he did to destroy the Democratic party? He was always always OK with me, and certainly wasn't any worse than JFK who, like Reagan, doesn't deserve all of the accolades.

Can someone explain WHY Hillary Clinton is such a prime and deserving presidential candidate? She has only held elective office ONCE. The only reason why she's in the senate is because of Bill.

Has she accomplished ANY of consequence while being a member of the US Senate?

And she's doesn't even have a unique and compelling persona.

When I look at her, I get the impression that a lot of fuss is being made about a 'beauty queen' who, frankly, isn't especially 'pretty'.

Other than marrying well, what is there that marks her as having great presidential timber?

Hillary is a tough, highly intelligent bitch who has always been one of the powers behind Bill Clinton's throne; pretty impressive credentials. And as a WASP from an upper middleclass family, wedding a trailer park hick like Bill Clinton wasn't exactly an example of marrying well.

Chris,
You underestimate the innate racism of White people if you don't believe that a material percentage of Illinois voters, GOP'ers/Democrats would have voted for dah (White) coach over the (Negro) IL State Senator. And I think the idea of electing to Congress the only guy to coach the fabled Bears to the Super Bowl victory would have proven most savory to the Illinois electorate.

Believe me: Obama and the State of Illinois (and the US Congress) dodged a bullet the caliber of an MX missile.

From the standpoint of the American presidency, the Democrats were 'toast' LONG before that skirtchasing Clinton strode into DC. In fact, if you REALLY think about it, the only reason we have had (a measly) 2 Democratic presidents in the last 30 years is because Nixon tried to help cover up a crime and Bush Sr's economy tanked and Ross Perot swiped part of his vote.

Perhaps this is why LBJ lamented that by authorizing the '60's Civil Rights legislation he was effectively signing away the Presidency to the GOP for generations to come.

Cynique,
You say Hillary was among the "powers behind Bill Clinton's throne". I question what 'kingdom' has Bill ever really held.

Other than getting elected twice (and designing new/exciting methods of staining dresses and 'flavoring' cigars), I defy you to name the ONE seminal achievement of his 8 years while residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

And, since we are speaking in a royal vernacular, I say about the heiress apparent Hillary: Just because one has enjoyed the attentive ear of the monarch does not mean that she is now herself fit to rule.

PS: By the time the uptown girl Hillary had met good ol' boy Bill, dude was, like her, a student of the esteemed Yale Law School. And he had already been awarded a vaulted Rhodes Scholarship to Britain's renowned Oxford University. Those are HARDLY the accoutrements of your typical "trailer park hick".

Bumpkin though he may have in some respects appeared to her, that chick could see that dude had 'winner' written all over 'em.

Having been elected and re-elected governor of Arkansas, and after having served 2 terms as President of the US, I don't think it's a stretch to say in figurative terms that Clinton occupied a "throne." And I can't believe how you underestimate Hillary. The reason her enemies hate her is that she is so ruthless and aggressive, so shrewd and power-hungry. What more could you ask of a person seeking the presidency? LOL. BTW, there's a new book out on Hillary, making it appear as though she wielded more influence than vice-president Gore during her tenure as first lady. And I don't say all of this because I am a particular fan of hers; I just point it out to prove that she is capable of being a major player in future presidential sweepstakes.
