I mean Z.Z. is good but she ain't THAT good. I have gone back through the Pen/Faulkners. I can find lists of winners but not any featuring nominees. I couldn't find anybody who won for their first book (a collection of short stories yet).

Should her book be nominated? Is it as good as any of the others? Sure. Would it be there without that old Iowa/New Yorker Machine?

I remember a few years ago Granta magazine tried to do this. Baddest writers under 40 or something. I had a conversation with one of the writers.

"I'm one of the baddest writers based on one story in their magazine?" he said. He completely rejected the campaign.

"They say your first novel is forthcoming," I said to him. "Don't believe the hype," he said.

He had more principles than I would have. But maybe he was smarter than I would have been, too.

I'll tell you my opinion, I think she has the chops write her way out of this, to, as they said of Norman Mailer, "Survive being labelled a genius." But it's some added pressure, yes it is.

Okay - what happens to the author's who fall between the crevice that lies between the ever popular chick-lit,pimp-thug or high sexed literature and the Iowa Workshop/NY Machine...what happens to those writer's?

If these authors put appostrophes where they don't belong, they probably never go anywhere. All kidding aside, everybody can't be a super star. There are mid-level achievers in every field of endeavor; sometimes they're lucky enough to earn a living at their chosen profession and sometimes they have to supplement it.

Cynique - I mean the "good" author's who know where to put apostrophes - the ones that are constantly over-shadowed by Zane, EJD and E. Lynn's (to name a few) what about the Shawne Johnson's, Olympia Vernon's and so on....how do we grab some attention for them?

bimsha: folk will [or can only] read what their comfortable with....

You can make suggests...or introduce fiction by association...for example: when i talk to a person about someone or something that reminds me of a character or a story, then i say...."oh that sounds like this story i read...you would like it...

Bimsha:

That's on them. My suggestion is that they get on the half time Superbowl show and show their chests, because if they ain't selling huge numbers of books, or knocking out the critics with their stylistic chops or scandalous subjects, or if they ain't got a machine keeping their names out front, then they are going to fall between the cracks. There isn't a thing you can do about it.
