Yukio, she's an awesome author, and a prolific one. Two of her other books, All About Red and A Cool Moonlight are compelling as well. My favorite of hers is still When I Am Old with You. Illustrator Kadir Nelson was a winner as well. His work is exquisite, with Thunder Rose, Dancing in the Wings, and Ellington Was Not a Street, the last written by Ntozake Shange. His children's books are written by well known folks like Debbie Allen, Will Smith and Spike and Tonya Lee. The McKissacks are long-time CSK winners, too.We truly do have wonderful children's literature artists of color, the best of all in all the world! |

I'm sure AJ is an awesome writer, as you say. My comment was less a criticism and more an insight. |

Oh Yukio, I was agreeing with you completely. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear enough. I didn't read your comment as a criticism. |

Kadir Nelson is indeed an awesome illustrator. I bought my five year old grandson two of his books for Christmas and he loves them. |

Bookgirl, I'm so glad your grandson loves his Kadir Nelson books. Which ones did you get for him? Plus, I'm so glad that you buy books for him for Christmas and ... and birthdays, too? Keep up your wonderful selections! |

Kadir Nelson's illustration absolutely made Spike & Tonya Lewis Lee's book Please, Baby, Please http://authors.aalbc.com/children2.htm I brought a few of these for presents as well.

Troy, I could have just looked at Kadir's illustrations in Please, Baby, Please and gotten enjoyment. I wasn't very inspired by the words, but then I don't have a toddler around me anymore to make me relate to Momma's pleadings in the book. :-). I think my favorite of his is Dancing in the Wings, written by Debra Allen. His portraiture is fabulous. I wish I could afford to buy some of his paintings for our walls, especially The Village That Vanished. He also has a traveling exhibit called The Children's Book Art of Kadir Nelson. |

Troy, I'm curious. Why am I now designated as a "silver" member. What does this mean?? Does this have something to do with the number of posts I've made?? |

Zambia; I got him Just The Two of Us by Will Smith and Debbie Allen's Brother of the Knight. For Valentine's Day; I got him Ntozake Shange's Ellington Street and the illustrations by Kadir are just breathtaking. He also loves The Little Bill series by Bill Cosby with illustrations by Varnette Honeywood. The boy just devours books and gets so excited whenever he comes to visit and asks me; "Granma you gotta book for me?" And being the book addict that I am....I get just as excited! Smiles. |

Bookgirl, you are truly a blessing. With grandmothers like you, hope still shines in this world for young men who love to read. You know, although Valentine's Day has passed, your grandson might like the picturebook "The Legend of the Valentine," written by Katherine Grace Bond, with illustrations by Don Tate II, an up and coming illustrator. He might also like Say Hey, A Song of Willie Mayes, written by Peter Mandel, and illustrated by Don Tate. |
