Get out of here if you haven’t read it yet. Well, I enjoyed this so much it may be my 2nd favorite Mosley book. Black Betty is still #1! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This is Mosley’s sci-fi/horror side. Although it’s really a story about a regular ole messed up man it feels sci-fi’ish. He’s got the good vs. evil thing, the transformation when Charles wears his father’s clothes and just plain weirdness with the man in the basement. Some of these things could be explained in a real world way but it said “sci-fi” to me. The writing style was different than the Easy/Fearless stories too - slower and smoother. I didn’t really get why Extine, the white girl, was in there. Gotta think about that some more. Question: Is Bennet Satan or God?

What a coincidence! I just posted my impressions of this book. I referred to it as being a parable, using characters to teach its lesson. I should've said it was an enigmatic parable because Bennet was certainly a symbol of evil, but the catch is that he was seeking redemption. So maybe he was a savior dying for his and our sins. |

Cynique: that's how I read Bennet too. I also wondered what Narciss saw in Charles. I figuered Bethany just liked men period. And I still haven't figuered out what Extine was about. |

Hi Crystal, To me, these women all seemed to be representative of certain types, and since the author used people as symbols, they were role players. Maybe Extine stood for the tenative white-woman-type who has mixed emotions about black men. Her companions who randomly befriended Charles and then thoughtlessly abandoned him, leaving him to find his way out of the woods could be symbolic of the white community in general. But that's just one way of looking at it. The book left itself open to many interpretations. |
