Hello All, I'm back from my holiday vacation. I haven't been reading all that much. Mostly, I've been playing my video games. Xbox...you gotta love it. I have been reading some Winter Wonderland books (part of The Once and Future King, the Artemis Fowl series and others) and a couple of my regular books. I have to tell you all, I had a good time. I read Carl Weber's new book Player Haters. I swallowed it whole. Gloria Mallette's The Honey Well is off the hook! And Tracy Price-Thompson's A Woman's Worth is sooo GOOOD. WHEW! The book is so good that the next time I see her, I'm have to slap her. Right now, I'm rereading Such Sweet Thunder because it hit me that I didn't right a review on it the first time I read it. It's an awesome book. I strongly recommend it. I hope you all had a chance to peruse the new CWMYB reading list. I like it. It has something for everyone on it. I can't wait to hear what you all think of it. I see The Darkest Child is being discussed in a thread. Nelson Eubanks' The First Thing Smoking kicks off the 2004 list. Remember his name, I'm expecting big things from him. I get the same positive vibe from him that I got when I read Victor LaValle's Slapboxing with Jesus. Mark my words, Eubanks ain't to be played with. If you have looked at the reading list you will notice that almost half of the list is republished novels that didn't get the audience it should have on their first run. In an earlier thread someone was talking about real literature, well these three books, The Lakestown Rebellion, Echo Tree: The Collected Short Fiction of Henry Dumas, and The Cotillion will give you a taste of literature. I'm anxiously looking forward to Nichelle Tramble's The Last King. Carey, are you ready? Nichelle will attend our on-line chat to discuss the book. I'm looking forward to that. I've also included that latest book by one of my favorite authors Jake Lamar, Rendezvous Eighteenth. Please check him out. Lamar hasn't been able to capture an audience yet and its not because of his skills and talent as a writer. I love him. I hope you all will as well. Speaking of on-line chats, make a note that this Wednesday, January 14, 2003 at 8 PM EST, Glenville Lovell will be in the chat room for a minute or two. Soon, I hope to be announcing a visit with Gloria Mallette of The Honey Well. I'll keep you posted. Some notable books hitting the stage: Dark Matter: Reading The Bones, the second anthology of the Dark Matter series; Walter Mosley's new novel; and a simply beautiful book (and you all know how I feel about religious books) Standing In The Need of Prayer: A Celebration of Black Prayer, this book is beautiful, BEAUTIFUL, strongly recommend it. It's looking to be a banner year that is off to a good start. *smile* |

Hello Thump First, WELCOME BACK! Man, I missed you. I knew your feelings on a few of the issues and thought you were going to jump in at any time but you resisted. Now you know I'm game on The Last King. Don't be pulling any of your tricks this time. No pulling Nichelle off to the side to lobby your position. ( Thump and I had this big debate about Daddy Al from Nichelle's last book. Anyway, during or before( can't remember exactly) the system "supposedly" crashed, yet ol'Thump maintained contact with Nichelle. To make a long story short, Thump rigged the chat . Check this out, it happened TWICE (lol). But anyway Nichelle and I stayed up late one night and straightened things out here on the open board. Check out the archieves, if you can. I don't know if you can still pull them up (Nov 3-5 2001). So yeah Thump, I am ready, are you . BTW, nice diverse reading list, I'll have to turn in some bottles to raise extra cash. Carey Carey |
