In the NY Times Magazine piece on Toni Morrison, a few months ago, it was mentioned that a first edition copy of The Bluest Eye was worth a few thousand dollars. Several years ago Charles Johnson, at a book reading-signing, said that my first edition copies of his early books had some considerable monetary value. I checked my copy of The Bluest... & it is indeed a first edition. I would like to know if anyone knows of any booksellers or dealers who trade in first edition works by black authors. |

Mike, I don't know of any dealers but yes, first edition books are valuable. I saw a first edition version of the self-published Addicted being sold for 600 dollars about a year ago and it has not even been out that long. I collect first editions and galleys. I plan to hold onto mine though. Peace, Zane |

I have quite a few first editions of AA (and other) books and like Zane, can't fathom the idea of selling them. :::gasping at the thought::: I remember battling it out for an ARC of one of E. Lynn Harris' books. I felt sorry for the other bidder because he/she didn't realize that I was going to get that book. Po' thang. To answer your question Mike E, I don't know of any specific AA sellers, but I know places like powells.com and alibiris.com do sell first editions. There's a site I came across years ago that helps you determine the value of your book. If it comes to me, I'll hit you back. Ummm, you wanna sell that copy of The Bluest Eye? ROFL. I'll have to check to see, though I think I already have it. But, if not, I'd be interested. <grin> Zane, we won't even talk about how many versions of Addicted I have. It's at the top of my list of books I've collected in duplicates. I love having self-published titles too that are later picked up. I have a few that even when the author sees them they question where I got them. Just recently received the self-published version of one of Gloria Mallette books; Shades of Jade. Woo hoo hoo. Gotta love it! -Tee |
