A story in the Village Voice by Ta-Nehisi Coates http://www.villagevoice.com/print/issues/0352/coates.php As this relates to our discussion about hip hop lit, maybe it would behoove those who want to approach/develop/write for this market to do some extensive canvassing about what they read now and what they want to read--it appears that non fiction books by and about hip hoppers sell, and non fiction books about subjects that they are interested in (music, clothes, movies, movie based books, etc) Perhaps, with their emphasis on keepin' it real, fiction is a loser with them--at this time, anyway. |

Chris, It would be VERY interesting to view the (authentic) financial/accounting reports/records of Vanguarde. Because they would likely tell the TRUE story of Vanguarde's collapse. |

ABM: Do you suspect there was a little hanky panky going on in the administrative offices? |

When you consider how Vanguarde, a company that had so much going for it, can fail so quickly, you have to wonder whether it was being bled of cash. |

I tend to agree with ABM. While Vanguarde may have lost a ton during the dot.com days. Their advertising sales had grown 51% over the prior year (if my figures are not perfect suffice it to say they were not hurting for advertising). Vanguarde was also backed by some deep pockets investors including Robert Johnson. Of course there is a larger story beneath the covers. I suspect it will come to light one day.

Troy/Chris, The "cynic" in me surmises the principals of Vanguarde started the venture with good intentions but they discovered their task would be more difficult than they were prepared or willing to endure. Therefore, they decided to loot Vanguarde of dough then be on their merry way. And, here's the clincher: They could conveniently use as a cover for their deed the recession of the last few years to justify Vanguarde's failure. |

The link to the article below would seem to confirm some of my suspicions of what was going on at Vanguarde. http://69.20.6.242/news2004/jan04/jan05/2_tues/news2tuesday.html
