Tee C:

Out of curiousity can you trim your list down to 5 of your favotites. You've read 100+ and you've listed 1/3rd of them. Surely a handful of them standout. I'll never get through 100 novels in a year, so if I have to read 5 which ones would they be?

Yvette - looks like you had a good year! I've not read all of the titles you listed but 4 four the books you've read this year are high on my all time list.

My list this year included more non-fiction than novel (which is pretty typical) my titles off the top of my head include:

The Known World - Edward P. Jones
Reconsidering The Souls of Black Folk - Crouch and Benjamin
No Excuses - (book on education authors names escape me now)
Ethnic America - Thomas Sowell

Ms. Tee....

"Minion" by L.A. Banks?

La Banks has got to be a personal friend of yours and you're doing her a favor right?

I'm sorry, Tee, but no matter how you judge that book...it's a total stinker. Just picking it up produces flop sweat.

Remember. Your reputation is on the line when you list the "must reads" for the year. You elevated "Minion" above 83 other books, most of them astonishingly better?

How can we trust your judgement again? That book was atrociously BAD!

Always Lurking, you can "trust" or not trust what you'd like. How can I "trust" someone who can't even put their name on a post?

The list I gave was mine and yep, Minion was one of the best books that I read this year. I've met Leslie Esdaile once and have conversed with her via email (as I have with quite a few authors) and she is one of many authors I truly respect, but that is irrelevant to me when I open the pages of a book. I call'em like I see'em and to me, Minion was a wonderful read and the follow-up The Awakening was just as good.

Interesting that my reputation is on the line simply because I listed my 2003 Must Reads.

Always Lurking..

I understand what you were saying to Tee. Many people come to this site to get the low-down on books they are considering reading and have to trust that the opinions/recommendations by those that are suppose to be in the know are not biased in any way. Over the years I found it best that I align myself with a few individuals that visit this site whos taste are similar to mine and whos recommendations I've come to trust(this did not happen over night) . This has served me well, I can't think of a recommendation by one of these individuals that did not live up to their opinion. I might not have like the book as well as they did but for the most part they were on line. I too thought it strange that "Minion" made Tee's top list after reading so many negative opinions about it. Of course a persons opinion is their own but very very seldom does a book garner the negative responses as Minion's and yet be at the top of anothers list. You don't generally see that disparity however that's not to say that it can't happen. Yet I am curious, maybe Tee was simply saying it's a must read in her opinion and not implying that it's one of the best books of the year, there is a difference.

So again, I think it's best if one knows something about the person making the recommendations and their "history". Also I've found that reviewers all have thier own little language or key words that speaks of the level of joy, pleasure or delight they received from a book that gives me an even greater undertanding or insight into their recommendation. In any event if one has doubts about a book that is being recommended by someone they could simply ask the person to be more specific as to why they liked the book and not jump to a conclusion of wrongdoings.

Carey, Tee said that the book was one of best books that she read this year. I would also think that if one qualifies a book as a must read then that they think the book is better than most other books.

Carey, what's "so many" as you mention in your post? True, I haven't been around much lately, but Thumper, Sharon and Kola are the only ones I recall saying they didn't like Minion, so I'm not sure how this quantifies as "so many" folks. Why can't it simply be that some folks like something (in this case Minion) while some others may not? I have not liked MANY books that others ranted and raved about.

I know quite a few folks who DID love Minion and are anxiously awaiting the follow-up, so simply because three posters on this board didn't like it, doesn't disqualify my personal likes or the book either in my mind. I may not be one of the "individuals" you choose to trust when talking about good books and must reads and I'm cool with that...no big deal. There are quite a few people on this board that I never agree with on a book and that's okay too. I really don't need anyone else to determine what I read or will like; it's just always interesting to hear the different thoughts.

Perhaps I'm sensitive, but to question my "reputation" or assume an author is a personal friend of mine simply because I loved their book when another AALBC poster might not have ain't too cool. I've never professed to be the "end all be all" when it comes to what's "good" or not because I only have my standards to meet.

And to clear up any confusion, the books I listed were books I rated a 4.5 (out of 5) or above, thus "must reads" or "best books" on the Tee C. Royal scale.

Hello Tee

First of all, I didn't question your reputation. Let me repeat that, I didn't question your reputation. I merely said I thought it strange that you placed Minion on your list when others thought it wasn't all that. It could well be that since my post came directly after one that did call you out you assumed that I was of that same vain. No dear, who am I to say what you like. If you read my post, I qualified my curiosity by saying such a disparity of likes and dislikes are seldom seen, that's all. Please view my post as if am surprised and curious NOT judgemental or accusatory. Tee, come on now girl, we kool and I'm sorry you felt as if I was attacking you. Hey, didn't you notice at the end of my post that I said there was another way to address the issue?

I do need others to lead me or turn me on to what they think I might like. I don't have the luxury of time or money to waste of poor books. Remember I'm just a poor ol' ex- Air Force like yourself trying to scratch two Nickel together. So please except my apology if my post read as if I was questioning you. I was questioning the disparity and until I read the book I can't say which way I would lean. BTW, there are other places in which one can get the dope on books beside Thumps Corner although I must admit this is my favorite, so I'm not going to roll with the "many" ball. I, like Reppskern, have been hangin' around here for some time (Repp said six years) so I understand how things can be misread and no harm...no foul. OKAY!?

Carey, that part of my response was to Always Lurking, not to you, so my apologies for not being clear. All's cool on my end...apology accepted, but unnecessary, mmmkay?

I'd prefer to discuss whether the book was "good" or not with someone who's actually read it anyway. <wink> I do know there are quite a few RAWSISTAZ who enjoyed it (as well as a few who didn't), so perhaps I'll turn them on to the AALBC boards so they can share their thoughts as a lot of them do not know about the group or these boards. Even though I went into my reading of the book with mixed ratings and comments around me from various outlets, I had no expectations. I'm not a "vampire" die-hard and I'm not into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade, or any other similar shows or movies. I couldn't get through one of Anne Rice's books and I don't even know if I read Dracula or not. It was just refreshing to read something different from everything else on the market and to be able to relate it to life. I still think the book is amazing. The characters were real for me, the issues surrounding their task was interesting, the whole concept of the Council, the levels of Hell...whew, all of it seemed well thought out and intrigued me. She also did a wonderful job setting up the back-story to lay out the following books in the series. I will admit that when I started reading, I blocked everything else out, it was one of those types of reads where I had to have all my attention devoted to the book. And I loved it!

Last thing. I only asked for clarification on the "many" issue since you were the one to bring it up. Sorry to hear you're passing up the chance to elaborate. I think there are just some books that go against your thoughts when you said "I qualified my curiosity by saying such a disparity of likes and dislikes are seldome seen."

I think Minion is one of those books. Another vivid one is Hot Johnny and the Women Who Loved Him. Some books you either love or hate, there is no middle ground.

Let me say it one mo' time: I LOVED MINION.

Carey, Tee labeled this discussion thread "Must Read Books!." She asked by Troy to limit her listing to her "favorites". Then she responded to Always Lurking that that Minion was one of the best books that she read this year. Then you said, "Yet I am curious, maybe Tee was simply saying it's a must read in her opinion and not implying that it's one of the best books of the year, there is a difference. "

So, all I was saying was that Tee had already indicated that this book was a must read and that it was one of the best books that she read this year. To say that a book is a must read, it would seem to me that it falls in that person's best books of the year category and not their least favorite books of the year category. But I could be wrong given the varied ways people rate books.

To answer your questions, no I don't have an opinion of the book or Always Lurking's post. I have no idea why it seemed to you that I did.

I said exactly what I wanted to say.

And, regarding responding to posts to someone who chose the username, Anonymous, it isn't that much different from these other "usernames." Thumper isn't Thumper's given name. Tee isn't Tee's given name. You may be signing your post with your given name but then you're one of the very few.

I thought the characters were well developed and the theme relevant to the time period for which it was written. I was left with a few questions about Rozelle, the mother. I don't want to give too much information away since the book hasn't been released. I just didn't get "the source" of all the hatred and anger. She was soooooooo evil! Overall, the book was wonderful. I'd love to read more from this author.

Great posts. I have made more than a few notations. Anyway, here are mine.

Bring Me Your Saddest Arizona - Ryan Harty (short story collection. Beautifully, beautifully written. Loved the title).

Rendezvous Eighteenth - Jake Lamar (AA mystery set in Paris. I really hope this continues as a series).

Walk This Way: Autobiography of Aerosmith - Stephen Davis (A little off the beaten path but I read this alongside "Dirt: History of Motley Crue while I was on vacation in the desert. Just seemed to fit).

More Like Wrestling -Danyel Smith. (Enjoyed the writing, the lyricism and the obvious craft of this writer).

Random Family- Adrian Nicole LeBlanc (nonfiction about a family in the Bronx. Heartbreaking but I couldn't put this down).

Live From New York: History of Saturday Night Live - Tom Shales & J.A. Miller. (Funny story. Hair raising stories. Great read).

Samaritan - Richard Price (One of my favorite novelists).

Last Car To Elysian Fields - James Lee Burke. (Latest in a stellar mystery series set in southern Louisiana. Cajun country and New Orleans).

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night - Mark Haddon (Don't know how this author pulled it off. Amazing book about an autistic boy in England who sets out to solve the mystery of a dog killed in his neighborhood).

Devil in the White City - Erik Larson (nonfiction about a serial killer operating in Chicago of the 1920s(?) during the first US World Fair. Engaging historical writing).

The Time Travelers Wife - Audrey Niffenegger. (Quirky and beautifully written. Very skilled writer, who handles an odd and tricky plot device with expertise).

The Life of Pi - Yann Martel (Much has been written about this book, many big award nods, and all deserved in my humble opinion).

Brownsville - Oscar Cesares (Short story collection. Centered around the Latino community in a Texas border town. This writer reads like the real thing).

Tishomingo Blues - Elmore Leonard. (Leonard is a fave. Curious to see what Don Cheadle will do with this as a director).

Too Beautiful to Die - Glenville Lovell (First in a series. I HOPE. Really enjoyed this book. Great new addition to the mystery field).

What I Loved - Siri Hustvedt ( Could not put this down. Hustvedt is the wife of Paul Auster and I dont know how so much talent exists in one house. I am a big fan of Auster and learned about Hustvedt after reading an interview with him).

Of course there are more - I had a list of 600 books - but these are the ones that really stuck out to me.

Happy New Year All.

Carey,
Thanks for making the excellent point about the excessive usage of "Anonymous" as a username. It is one I have tried to make before, though, admittedly, not as succinct as you have.

I too care not to know the real identity of those with whom I converse with here. But it seems unfair and unreasonable to expect someone to conduct a serious, ongoing discussion with another when that someone can't even distinguish one respondent from virtually countless others.

Carey, this might be something that you wouldn't never do or wouldn't think that others do, but there are people who post under usernames that have already been declared by others, which is not Anonymous. I was using another user name, which was not Anonymous, and then had someone else to use the exact same name and start posting. And, I have seen it happen to others on this board.

Curious, are you as concerned about the same person posting under several usernames? Sometimes in the same message thread. Cynique has caught this a few times, and she has to know that she was not the only one.

So, really you never know who are behind any of these usernames. Other times it's the same person posting under several names, but this Anonymous username for whatever reason gets folks all riled up unnecessarily.

Regarding answering a question addressed to Anonymous, I may or may not respond. But then if I was using another username, I still may or may not respond. It all depends upon the question asked.

Anonymous "January 01, 2004 - 11:49 am",

I am amusingly intrigued by what you say, especially in your first paragraph.

There must be close to 1 million individual words in the English language alone. And there countless more word phrases/clauses, acronyms/initials, hyphenated words, foreign words, etc. So the idea that a person, especially one who can effectively read/write, can't and won't devise/maintain her or his own unique moniker is startling to me.

No one is trying to "out" you or anyone else here.

But don't you and others understand that Carey's (and my) seeking to distinguish a respondent is borne from his desire to accurately and respectfully converse with you? But, again, how can someone adequately do that when he can't separate your personality/character from that of a myriad others?

And don't you realize that consistently using the ubiquitous "Anonymous" only enables others to, not prevent others from, willfully confusing their views with your own?

I usually don't reply to anyone who uses "Anonymous", because I have no idea if it's the same "A" or what. I'm like Cynique, sometimes I think they all are Kola lurking. Or any new people I think are her too. But why all the Anonymous posting?

Can't they just say, hey this is Chew Chew Train?

Geez!

Anonymous

I am and I hope you are opposed to anything that hinders, hampers, restricts or in any way interfers with the flow of communication. It appears that you are having a hard time admitting or agreeing that the use of the username Anonymous could impede or slow it's progress.

You wrote: Curious, are you as concerned about the same person posting under several usernames? Sometimes in the same message thread. Cynique has caught this a few times, and she has to know that she was not the only one.

When the number of respondents becomes more important the the substance of the posts I might then become "concerned". People have been posting under different names within the same posts for years, it's an old and usually uneffective tool to give the appearance that persons other than themselves support a view or position. Besides hat does this have to do with the issue of Using Anonymous as a username?

You said: Carey, this might be something that you wouldn't never do or wouldn't think that others do, but there are people who post under usernames that have already been declared by others, which is not Anonymous. I was using another user name, which was not Anonymous, and then had someone else to use the exact same name and start posting. And, I have seen it happen to others on this board.

Ahhh okay ......Again, what does this have to do with the issue?

You wrote: Regarding answering a question addressed to Anonymous, I may or may not respond. But then if I was using another username, I still may or may not respond. It all depends upon the question asked.

Ahhh ahh...hello.....that's my point. A persons desire to respond is their perogative but if you don't even know if the question is being asked of you, the communication process is hindered.

How about: It depends upon the question being asked and of whom it's being asked.

I don't think the Anonymous username is getting folks all riled up as you stated. I would care to view it as folks seeking a smooth unimpeded exchange of ideas and communication.

Again, it's obvious you're more comfortable with "ya Buts" than "you're right" or " I see your point" and cluttering the field with unrelated retoric so I'm done. Some people have a hard time saying I love you.

Response: You, Yukio, Cynique, ABM, Chris and a host of other people don't sign with Anonymous and from what I've read on the board, the communication process hasn't been all smooth sailing. Been hindered plenty of times. You all direct comments and questions to one another and STILL the responses are muddled and misread. So, what's the excuse for the communication being impeded, slowed and hindered among those who signed with an username other than Anonymous?

I don't think the name Anonymous hinders communication no more than a number of others things that take place on this board, including people not reading what's posted. So, if using Anonymous is a culprit, there are many, many more that don't seem to get others as upset.

You wrote:

Response: Well, by the reponses from you, Red, and ABM, it's obvious then you all are riled enough to bring up the issue and to continue to respond.

Okay Anonymous, Again it's obvious you just wish to play. However, you did imply (backing in) that the use of the username in question can pose a problem by saying " but it's no more than a number of others things that take place on this board". I'll take that white flag. I've come to realize that you are constitutionally incapable of admiting wrong.

The communication process via this medium will forever have it's problems it's the nature of the beast yet I believe the goal or challenge is to eliminate all of the obstacles we CAN control, why add to them.

Just because a person responds to an issue does not mean they are riled. We respond out of respect and to exchange ideas. I told you why we were responding to you on this issue. If you wish for us to ignor your posts your responses are increasingly giving us a green light to do so.

Bro. Carey!
This is off-topic, I know, but I just wanted to say Happy New Year 2004. I was in DM in June and again Labor Day and thought of ya.
And Sis. Tee C. Royal, two more books that I read that I think are "must reads" (being in a bookclub has certainly increased my adult reads)
The Future has a Past, by J. California Cooper
Sittin' in the Front Pew, by Ebony Brown

I remain amazed that though Kola is not (apparently) posting, still folks mention her name?

Carey,

You wrote:

My response:
Oh, so, this is what this is really all about ... you want me to admit that I am wrong. Well, sorry, my dear, I will only do so when I am.

And, really, wrong about what? Choosing the username I want? Oh, puhleaze. Ever considered that *you* might be wrong?

Seems to me, you don't wish to have a dialogue, engage in communication and/or have an exchange of ideas, you want others to co-sign, high-five, give dap, to whatever you put forth on this board. Again, sorry, I don't roll that way. ROFL

I fully understand what you wrote 2 posts ago (I even read what ABM had to say about this months ago), but just don't fully agree. Just as you don't fully agree with me. Which is not what I expected anyway, I just throwing something else out on the table for consideration.

BTW, read any must books lately? :-) As for myself, I am currently reading The Known World, and would consider it a must read book.

Thanks for the holler. I hope the new year brings you plenty of peace & joy also.

I've been noticing you peek in here every so often to drop a little wisdom on us but it's been awhile since we've last exchanged words. How are your books going, can we expect any new releases? Did you enjoy this years Storytellers convention?

For all of you that don't know it, Sis E. is an accomplished author of childrens books. She will not toot her own horn so I will. I've given her books as Christmas gift and they all have been recieved with great delight. She is also a Master Storyteller.

You'll have to let me know when you're going to be in the flatlands again, we can hookup and have coffee.

Hey, I got The Known World as a Christmas gift, I'm also currently reading it. I'll holler at ya when I find something interesting to talk about. Oh lord, now how do you suggest I get at you? How about I give you a name.....ahhh.....ahhh something like Caldonia? Huh, what do you think. Maybe you're more of the "Mildred" type (lol). Anyway, I do enjoy the author's style and look forward to a discussion.

Nothing like jumping back in the swing of things for the new year after being gone for such a long period of time but since my name was specifically mentioned...I'm here.

As far as Minion and Tee's assessment, let me just say I highly respect Tee's opinion but I know her well enough to agree to disagree on certain books and it makes interesting intelligent conversation to discuss different points that the other of us might have missed. I'll say that Minion didn't meet my top 10 lists of books read in 2003 and I too read about 100 books this year. But I'm not talking bad about my soror either, I highly respect L.A. Banks for her literary contributions and read her works when they come out. I've not had the pleasure to read Awakenings yet, but I will in hopes that I will like it better than Minion.

As far as my top 10 books in alphabetical order, they are as follows: (Not necessarily published in 2003)
Billy- Albert French
Church Folk- Andrea Michelle Bowen
Little Girl Lost- Keith Lee Johnson
Loose Ends- Electa Rome Parks
Misdemeanor- Tonya Marie Lewis
My Love Notes to a Black Man- Lana Reid
No Regrets-Patricia Haley
Scooter and the Galactic Starship - Douglas R. Robinson
Somebody's Knocking at my Door- Francis Ray
Unchained Memories: Reading from the Slave Narratives

Hello all,

This is my first posting; however, for almost 2 years, I have enjoyed reading your postings and have gained valuable insight and information.
I am an avid reader and has read many recommended book from postings. It was pretty tough selecting 5, eventhough I only read 48 books in 2003, but here goes: my top 5 MUST READ BOOKS:

1."Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston", by Valerie Boyd
2."The Black Rose", by Tananarive Due
3."Dancing on the Edge of the Roof", by Shelia Williams
4."For Every Black Eye", by C.J. Hawthorne
5."A Man Most Worthy", by Marcus Major

I noticed on your list you had a book by Electa Rome Parks. In 2001 I read her book The Ties That Bind. When did Loose Ends come out? If this is a new offering it's nice to know that she is still writing and that it made your top 10.

Someone mentioned L.A. Banks's contribution to "literature". U gotz to be kidding? This woman can't write. She's a hack romantic novelist!

Minion was scribble crap on paper.

Sis E and Idrissa, I enjoyed Sitting in the Front Pew too...it was a wonderful and (sadly) true look at how some families act when a loved one dies. There were some hilarious spots in there too.

Akaivyleaf, yep we can definitely agree to disagree. I think there's only three that we've disagreed on, and way many more that we felt the same or similar about. And, I'll have to look, but I think I left Unchained Memories off my reading list. I really enjoyed that too and I must check out Billy. I think I bought it back when we were talking about it early on last year and with all the moving, I have no idea where it is.

Thanks to everyone else for sharing their lists. I don't think I'll ever be able to read all the books on my to be read list or in my library, but it sure is wonderful being able to share with other readers. I think I'm going to keep a notebook in 2004 with "Recommended Books" and list who/where the recommendation originated so I can follow up. :-)

Happy New Year everyone.

Well, I am one of the other RAWSISTAZ who truly enjoyed Minion. I was shocked really how a few posts were attacking Tee and Ms. Banks. I mean, who the hell died and left you Goddess to reign over the entire literary world? People's opinions are just that, people's opinions. If Tee chose Minion as her must read, and If I chose it as well, it is because WE CHOSE IT! because WE LIKED IT! Others have their own must reads that I would not care for....but to attack someone's rep...puhleezzzz. Everyone has their opinion, but to call any book a piece of crap....again, I repeat myself...puhleezzz.

I would like to read your upcoming blockbuster novel, or visit your literary community online...oh wait, that's right you don't have one!!!

I'm a man Shelle. I'm not a writer, I'm a book store owner.

I never attacked "Tee". I stated the fact that L.A. Banks is a medicore writer and that MINION was written with all the pinache and skill of a preschooler tearing open a pack of pencils.

Poor writing is one thing. But when someone tries to call it one of the BEST books of the year, then those of us who have READ it and who know a good book can warn others not to waste their money.

MINION is a true blue stinker. But you kin eat that boiled egg if you want.

Hello

A person cannnot "hide" behind the statement "that's my opinion". You are still responsible for your statements. If your position/statement/remarks or any such utterance is termed by you to be an opinion but yet can be disproven by facts it no longer has the protection and rights afforded an opinion. Of course there are situations, events, activities and/or happenings that cannot be explained, proven or disproven by facts and therefore we must sometimes depend on someones judgement or opinion to draw a conclusion if one is warranted. In the case of book reviewers, they have a responsibilty to know the craft of writing fiction. I believe they must have the awareness of the tools of the craft and the process, which will permit them to comprehend and judge the success or failure of a writers ability to "show" us a story by the words they use and their formation. I think it's safe to say the more insight thsy have into the writing process increases their appreciation of it. Accordingly if a reviewer fails to identify banal words, boring narration, underdeveloped plot and/or charectors etc, their reputation can in deed be in jepordy. Their opinions are theirs that's a fact but so are the ramifications of them that show a lack of skills demanded of them.

Carey 'ol boy I couldn't have said it any better.

While "Tee" thinks I'm making personal digs at her, I'm simply affording her the same standards and practices that would be expected of anyone calling themselves a critic.

The boring narration, underdeveloped characters, exciting but wasted plot ideas and the overall execution by the other of MINION was shoddy.

I've been selling books 18 years and I know a flop when I read one.

Now Solomon Jones wrote some very good pulp fiction entertainment this year. Francis Ray is always superior with romance. St. Martin's just screwed up on this MINION franchise is all. They had a weak roster this year overall.

They failed to adequately promote J.D. Mason and Solomon Jones IMHO.

Hello Everyone,

I am back and popping in to say hello and Happy New Year! Hopefully, I can post on the board without coming under attack. If I do, thanks for the laughs in advance. I just have to say that it is interesting that people can't name the books that they truly enjoyed without being accused of being a "bad reader" or "playing favorites." I read Minion when I was on a business trip in 2003 and I thought it was good. It held my attention, which is more than I can say about the other five books I took with me on the trip. I didn't finish any of the rest. I will purchase and read the second in the series because I trust it will be just as enjoyable as the first one.

Electra Parks Rome actually just landed a publishing deal so she will definitely be around and I am very happy for her.

Because I had to go through hundreds of submissions to narrow it down to the 22 Strebor titles for 2004, I did not get to do a lot of recreational reading last year but The Honey Well was excellent. I am currently reading The Known World. This is my third copy of the book. The first one walked out of my hotel room in October, I gave the second copy to my father to read, and so now I am reading the third one.

I definitely plan to read The Darkest Child and I see a lot of other books on various lists posted here that I hope to check out. I will become more familiar with all titles soon enough because I just leased my first bookstore on Thursday. That will be my "new venture" in 2004 to add to my other ones.

Peace,
Zane

Hi Brother Carey,
You are so kind with your words about my books. Thanks, I needed that. At a time when it's so much easier and cute to down a writer than to lift them up, your compliments certainly helped.
You asked what I was doing. I'm working on a new middle grade (ages 9 to 13) historical fiction book. And my short short historical fiction book for reluctant middle school readers came out in October. It's in an educational reading series and won't be available in bookstores.
About your stomping grounds -- seems like a weekend of Black history comes along in Des Moines called "I'll Build Me a World" -- I think that's the name -- at the Iowa Historical Building either this month or next, with speakers, performances, music, poetry, seminars, etc. I've never been but I've heard it's very inspirational, impressive, etc. You might check it out if you don't get bogged down in one of those Iowa blizzards.

Hey Sis E.

Reluctant readers huh, that's a new one. I remember when they came out with "new math", I didn't know there was anything wrong with the "old math" :-) I think I was a reluctant reader and all I got was the job of washing the dishes every night until the next report cards came out (lol). I know I'm being silly, what's special about this book?

I know our posts should probably be under another thread but hey.

By the way, we are presently under a snowstorm alert, 9" and still falling. See what you did :-)

I'm going to have to check out that "I'll Build Me A World", sounds like fun and lord knows I need some.

Brother Carey,
Nine inches, huh? I remember the day when the temperature was 50 below in DM and three feet of snow was on the ground, and ... anyway, reluctant reader is an educational term to describe children who have reading problems and thus are "reluctant" to read. Educational publishers create books in reading series with selective vocabulary and short book lengths to tempt young folks to read. This series is for middle and high school students who have reading problems but wouldn't want to read books meant for second and third graders. Therefore the subject matter and issues in this series are more sophisticated but written simply enough that teenagers can understand.
This is actually a very large field. Lots of children have trouble reading on their age level, so they give up when they have trouble comprehending, and then they can't read their other assignments.
Anyway, the name of my book is "To Be Free" (can't get any simpler than that) and it's in the Steck-Vaughn Power Up Readers series. It takes place in North Carolina in the 1850s.
Please note that adults with reading problems like to read these books as well. And keep in mind that reading problems doesn't mean "need glasses.' These problems are literacy problems.

Hi Just the Truth (hope that's the right truth),
Legit? Thanks, Carey, for having my back. Some of my other titles are The Minstrel's Melody, in the American Girl History Mysteries series; The Secret of Gumbo Grove; Thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.!; A Blessing in Disguise, and African American Musicians. You may not find "To Be Free" because like I wrote, it's an educational piece of work and sold only to educational institutions apparently. And then they want you to buy the whole series.

****CAREY awakens confussed, staggers to his feets barely able maintain an upright position. As he dusts himself off he looks around in total bewilderment, he doesn't know where he is or how he got there and worst of all he doesn't know his name. Reaching in his pocket he pulls out a pack of Lucky Strikes and without hesitation, lights one up. Damn, I'm a smoker he mumbled. After the second drag of the Chesterfield he again mumbled, damn, I'm a cigarette smoker..... that bums cigarettes and stores them in a funky Lucky strikes package. Then to his dismay he notices the cigarettes had been partly smoked. He spit the cigarette out and said, "Damn I'm a cigarette smoker that picks them up from the ground or lord know's where". As he reached down to pick up the cigarette he just spit out (bad habits are hard to break) a name came to him...Sis E. Could that be his name, he thought. Then again slowly but surely another name came to mind, C. A. R. E. Y. Carey...carey...carey, he repeated. But nothing else seemed to go with it other than the fact that he needed to carry his nasty behind to a shower because he smelled like a goat. Apparently his mind wasn't the only thing he lost control of during his blackout. As he wandered through the unfamilar area he heard a door bell ring. Oh lord he thought, here he was, in someone elses home with poop running down his leg. While looking frantically for a place to hide, he again felt himself losing consciousness. falling to the floor he cried out, "SISTER E., SISTER E. FORGIVE PO OL' ME. ****** :-)

I am still waiting for that autograghed book from you. You probably just forgot :-)

I have a space reserved for it, with my other autograghed one. Well I sorta do, I haven't made up my mind. I was thinking of putting yours between Kola's "Long Train and kathleen's Skin Deep but I'm not sure it's a fit there. Then I thought maybe it would go better with the violence of Guy Johnson's Standing at The Stratch line and the ease of the books by my friend ( I think!? :-( )Eleanor E. Tate, you know a little transition or bridge. Then again, Camika Spencer's When All Hell Breaks Loose could use a "shotgun". I'm sure you have a title that could ride along with hers. anyway, what do ya think, you choose a spot for me :-)? BTW, I do have one signed by Leslie Esdaile, maybe I should keep the romantic themes together.

Well Anon, there's actually a story behind all of them, some of which turned out to be quite funny although at the time it didn't seem so, as Ms. Cross and Ms. Spencer will attest to :-).

Now I can't give away all my/their/our secrets but sometimes I had to contact the big boys like Manie Barron at Random House. On a few occasions the authors actually came here, yeah Iowa. But to tell you the truth author are ordinary people like you or I and are generally very approachable. Some time ago when Thump was still thin, we would have chat night on this site and the authors would attend if they could. Well, one thing would lead to another and in some cases the authors and I would become friends exchanging e-mails and such. One of thoses authors was Alice Holman, the author of the very good suspense/mystery novel The Last Days Murder List.

When my wife was ill, Sis. E, knew that my wife loved to read and out of the kindness of her heart would send a book, along with words of encouragement. Even though her books are primarily for children we would have the pleasure of viewing them and passing them on to our nieces and nephews.

So it really boils down to the authors, and I've never......let me repeat that, I've never ran into an author that was not appreciative of my interest in them and their writings.

You can also meet authors at book fairs. My wife loved to read. We enjoyed "meeting" and talking with the authors on and off the board. In some case, Ann, my wife would recommend books to them that they hadn't read. Sometimes we forget that authors are frequently big time readers and therefore need a tip or two on what's out there. Anyway, I am not a collector of books for any monatary reasons or anything like that. We read those bad boys with jelly on our hands and everythang. But the whole experience of meeting the authors, reading the books and the conversations before and after is a joy, a fun little hobby. Authors are just regular folk that love to read, write AND talk.......in most cases.

Now, all you authors that were holding your breath for fear that I might say something you didn't want heard can exhale now :-), I'm done.

See, I do have a couple that were.....ahh....well let's just say, they wasn't all that nice.

You know, I should write a book about it, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Tee:

You and I have already discussed Minion and, although I didn't personally like the book as I've already told you offline, I respect your opinion and I would be willing to bet that no two people like ALL of the same books! I'm all for standing up for your opinion but not when you have to attack someone (like Always Lurking did to you). My favorite books that I read in 2003, in no particular order were:

1) My Daughter's Boyfriend by Cyndey Rax (an advance copy but it'll be available to the rest of the world in June)
2) The Fall Of Rome by Martha Southgate

3) Trouble Man by Travis Hunter

4) Leaving Atlanta by Tayari Jones

5) Love Frustration by RM Johnson

Yes, I know most of these books weren't written in 2003 but since I READ them in 2003, I've included them.

Zane:

I'm happy to see you back to posting messages. For what it's worth, I was one of your supporters when you were getting attacked (and, as a result, I was getting attacked too...). Nevertheless, you shouldn't let some of these unkind and rude people make you leave this discussion board. You have a lot of fans out there too, myself included. I'm planning on reading Nervous soon which I hope to enjoy.
