I just scored an 1st edition copy of Gwendolyn Brooks' A Street In Bronzeville which is in excellent condition. Were can I find more like these? Are there conventions, stores, websites, etc. I can reference? |

Wow Cyberscribe...good for you! I love when I come across goodies like this. I would also recommend you check out Powell's...www.powells.com. They have a good selection of used and hard to find books, though their prices are a bit overkill sometimes.
Also, eBay and half.com are good places too.

Well, what I found was not a rare book but I did happen upon it by serendipity. It was left at my house by a friend and was just laying there, staring back at me. And since I was between books I decided "what the heck", I'll check it out. I did, however, approach this novel with some misgivings since everybody's favorite diva had previously dissed the author. Anyway, I started the book and, much to my surprise, finished it. Certainly not a candidate for a Pulizer Prize but I think the reason I stuck with it was because it was an easy (lazy) read with a conversational style that zipped right along, dialogue that rang true, and a juicy, gossipy plot that provided the reader with a look at how the black uppercrust lives. Bottom line, "P.G. County" by Connie Briscoe was an entertaining summer read. Now, "Passing" by Harlem Renassiance writer Nella Larsen is laying there staring back at me. I read the definitive biography of Nella by Thadious Davis a couple of years ago and although her life lacked all of the visissitudes of Zora Neale Hurston, Larsen was still an intriguing literary figure. I had an elderly Aunt who knew Nella from the days when she was a faculty wife at Fisk universtity where her husband was a chemistry professor. She described Nella as a rather subtle person who chain-smoked and loved to play bridge. Sooo, "what the heck"... |

I found a copy of The Conjure Woman by Charles Chestnutt in my father's house after he passed. I believe it is a 193? edition. The original was written back in 1899. The stories were about ex-slaves in Robeson County which is where my father is from which he believe may have had tales about his family. So any find like these ARE rare. |

Cyberscribe: I found a first edition of THE LANGSTON HUGHES READER on Alibris.com last year and felt like I had found a million dollars! LOL
Cynique: I read P.G. County recently....it WAS a good lazy read. You know it was a play on the folks who live in Silver Spring, Maryland. Nothing deep about it; but I enjoyed it. |
