Yesterday, I watched 60 Minutes with my parents. The show featured a story on Emmett Till. Both of my parents are from Mississippi. After 50
years, they can still remember what happened during the time the brutal murder occurred.
For me, seeing Emmett Till's mangled face reminded me how important it is to vast a vote on Tuesday, November 2, 2004. My parents and grandparents had to fight for their votes. Many people died just so we could pull a lever
or punch a card.
Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, you must vote!!!! This election is the most important election in recent history and
could determine the course of our nation for generations to come.
****Before election day, call your appropriate county board of elections to find out your correct voting precinct. If the phone is busy, arrange a lunchtime trip and take your co-workers and friends.
Other tips for election day:
1) Take your driver's license and a utility bill (or mail with your current address with postmark within two weeks of election) with you to your voting precinct.
Under Ohio Law, your vote can be challenged at the polls. Based on reports from other states, voters have been turned away for not having proper identification. It may be inconvenient, but this election is too important not to be prepared.
2) Be prepared to wait.
Both parties predict record turnout. This means you will probably have to wait in line. Please be patient. This election is too important for a person not to cast a vote because he or she didn't feel like voting. Just be prepared. Take a book, newspaper, MP3 player, or anything else that will help you past the time.
3) Don't go to the polls alone.
Vote with Poll Partner(s) from your voter precinct.
4) Take your camera phones, cameras, or recording devices, etc.
If you see something suspicious, take a picture, record, do what you can to make sure it is recorded. One of the reasons people were disenfrancished during the last election is "no one saw anything."
5) Check your vote to make sure it's properly cast.
In Ohio, 73% of voting precincts will use the notorious punch card ballots. Unfortunately, punch card ballots are still being used in many states that could determine this election. Check your ballots to make sure there are no hanging or dangling chads. Make sure your vote is cast for the people you want in office and for the issues you want passed.
6) DON'T LEAVE THE POLLS EVEN IF THE TIME FOR VOTING ENDS!!!!!!
If you get to a poll before it closes, you are entitled to cast a vote. Don't believe anyone who tries to turn you away!!!!
7) Volunteer!!!
Have the day off? Not currently working? There are several opportunities available for poll monitors, etc. Volunteer to help if you can. For example, if you know people who need assistance in getting to the polls, help them
(i.e. a ride to the polling station).
To the younger generation of voters, let's honor our parents and grandparents by showing them how much we appreciate their struggles and
their sacrifices.
VOTE. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES!!!!!
