How is everyone? I'm taking a manuscript editing course at NYU and our first assignment is to read Saul Bellow's "Seize the Day" and J.M. Coetzee's "Disgrace", our professor's thinking is that we should start at the top! We have to do a written assessment of gut responses AND a critical evaluation of both works...my question is how do you do a critical evaluation? I pretty much forgot because it's been so long. I had a wonderful book, entitled "How to Read a Book", but I think I put it in storage (I have tooo many!). Can anyone give me a brief summary? I knew to come here to ask this question. Thanks! |

Rashena, I would image a "critical evaluation" would be a longer, more indept, academic version of a book review, where by you would be required to identify, rationalize and judge the type/quality of author's work in all the major areas of literature, including, but not limited to, the following: @ Characterization @ Plot @ Narration @ Dialogue @ Tempo @ Point of View @ Theme @ Morality |
