Anybody got the 411 on what books her club has been selecting lately? She seems to have pulled back from her grand mission to put us on the pathways of literary righteousness after the contretemps concering her selection of East of Eden. (I understand when she was serving jury duty she was carrying a copy of Anna Karenina. I bet it was a fake cover over a copy of Zane's The Heat Seekers! |

The Good Earth - that was one of my favorite books as a teen and the movie too. I read everything of Pearl Buck's that I could find. I also enjoyed East of Eden and Anna Karenina. Guess I was in Oprah's book club and didn't even know it. |

While we're on the subject of Oprah, it is now being revealed that all of the recipients of those new cars are now indebted to the IRS to the tune of $6000, the tax assessment due on their winnings. So, most of these "lucky" winners will have to sell their cars to pay off Uncle Sam and use the reminder to buy cheaper cars. The only taxes Pontiac paid were the sales taxes. Life's little ironies. |

Cynique, So much for her grandiloquent gesture. Because once what you cite goes national, all the press/money invested in this PR stunt will have gone for not. |
