Hello All, I'm coming back to my own damn board! Mainly because I did not take my Winter Wonderland reading vacation. The mood just didn't strike me. My heart was elsewhere so I went to my heart's desire...AA Lit. I read a whole lot of books during our month haitus, a book a day! Here's a small taste: 1.) Red Light Wives by Mary Monroe: DA BOMB! I love me some Mary! 2.) God Still Don't Like Ugly by Mary Monroe: I love me some more Mary! It's official Monroe is definitely one of cream of the crop authors. Her winning streak continues. 3.) The Blackbird Papers by Ian Smith: The book was well written, but I had some problems with it. Not bad for a first book; I've read better. 4.) Blood On The Leaves by Jeff Stetson: Off the HOOK! Strongly recommend it. 5.) Brothers In Arms by Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Anthony Walton: Excellent history of the 761st Black Tank Battalion. If you haven't heard of the 761st Tank Battalion, I'm not surprised. Until I read this book, I did not know that they existed. The book had just enough historical details to make the book credible, while maintaining an easy to digest flow. Another strong recommendation. 6.) Pretenses by Keith Lee Johnson: Wonderful, wonderful novel. I am hoping that this is the beginning of a wonderful suspense/smystry series. 7.) Distant Lover by Gloria Mallette: GET IT! GET IT! GET IT! Mallette does it again! I just love her! 8.) Tell The Court I Love My Wife by Peter Wallenstein: I think I talked about this one before, I still recommend it. It gave me slightly different dimension on how this country deals with black folks. 9.) Don't Want No Sugar by J. D. Mason: Listen, Mason is DA BOMB. This novel is a prequel to her last year's hit, One Day I Saw A Black King! This book will go down on many Top Ten lists in the upcoming months. 10.) The Root of All Evil by Joylynn Jossel: The evil should have been Jossel writing this "book". I couldn't get past page 10. It sucks beyond reason. 11.) The Lion's Brood: The Story of Hannibal by Rafael Scott: Too short, way too short. The real crime is is that Scott is truly a wonderful author, but with a story that should have been treated as an epic story, worthy of a trilogy of novels with each novel consisting of 300-500 pages easily, Scott shortchanged me by giving me a 180 page book. 13.) Ride or Die by Solomon Jones: Jones gives me his usual excellent writing. He's beyond good. But I have to admit that I was disappointed with the novel because it has the same basic format as his other two novels, Pipe Dreams and The Bridge. That said, I still liked it, but I don't love it. 14.) The Angel of Harlem by Kuwana Haulsey. I'm in the middle of this one and Haulsey is off the friggin hook. I love her style and her treatment of her main character, Dr. May Chinn. I can't wait to get back to it. Whew! Now, I got reviews to write. *smile* |

Hello All, Carey: *LOL* I KNOW! The difference is in the author. I know and love the quality of Solomon's writing. So, reading any of his works is a no brainer. Also, anyone can read the first 10 pages in each book and will be able to tell the difference as well. |

Has anyone read " The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk-Kidd? I think the book was published about two years ago... Great book, powerful female characters. Also, this weekend, I saw the flick " Maria full of grace". It's a foreign film. A very sad, true-to-life documentary about oppression and opportunity for poor desperate young women in South America. |

Hey Thumper Welcome back and all that jazz - hey y'all to erryone else. I am well and have to admit that I have seen Mary Monroe and the covers -- yes the covers turn me off - but I just might have to look past it since it getting the -- thumbs up treatment. As for Blackbird Papers -- I loved it -- I suppose since I work in a university setting and am from New England - it is nostalgia for me -- As for Angel of Harlem - that book is -- TIGHT - as the kid's say. Her prose are poetic and I love the sense of depth that she gives the notable Harlem community of 1920s-1930s I will be looking for your final wrap on Angel -- Mr. Thump Oh well I am out - check y'all later -- Peace ps - I am reading RootShock by Fullilove - some a little scholarly - and scary because it is happening as we speak - |

Hello All. I love Mary Monroe - Mama Ruby is one of my favorite characters! I still haven't read the God Don't Like Ugly stories but they're on my ridiculously long list. I enjoyed The Blackbird Papers too. A quick easy summer mystery. What problems did you have with it Thumper? Do they have anything to do with the set-up and who did it? I did. I even went back and re-read the first few pages to see if I missed something. |

Boy, I have been readin' too. "Blood on the Leaves" is definitely all of that. I also recommend "Chasin' It" by Tony Lindsay, which is basically street lit from a gay, drag queen's perspective. And be sure to check out "The Revolution of the Mentally Dead" by Darrin Osborne, a non-fiction title that states that there is something seriously wrong with The War on AIDS, The War on Drugs, and what happenned on 9/11. Can you say conspiracy theories? That's it for my highly recommended on the black hand side. You can find my full reviews on Amazon or BN.com or that website ya'll know I write reviews for. (Google me if you don't know.) Hey, hey. This is going to be my last year doing the review thang. I just signed with a literary agent to get my novel in motion. So I'll be busy working on that and my short story collection. (Be on the lookout for the novel "Where is the Love? in Fall of 05.) I'm sho'll gon' miss those free books. I ain't bought a book all year. Later, Emanuel Carpenter |

Yes Sir Buddy, I can't wait for your book to hit. See, you're sort of like family so I know I got the hook-up with you. Hey, wasn't it you that said the "picture" would make a good book cover? Tell you what I'm gonna do, ahh, why don't I ahh.......wait, look at all those Thumpites trying to peep our conversation. Emanuel, let me know when your book drops or what you think of my "beg".....okay. Now I'm not saying I'm going to take it easy on you if I get a chance to read it but I might highlight the high points, if you know what I mean. carey |

Hi Thumper! Nice to meet you, have heard lots about you. LOL It seems like a lot of us are reading Mary Monroe, I am almost finished with my copy of Red Light Wives! This is her best one yet, though The Upper Room is still a personal favorite that I recommend to everyone I know, if I don't personally buy them a copy. Soul_Sister, this is DEFINITELY one case where you shouldn't judge a book by the cover, you are missing out on one of the best newFOUND authors around these days (I say newfound because The Upper Room was first published in '85 or something equally surprising!). I picked up Wendy Williams' new book yesterday and decided against going to see her at Virgin in Times Square this evening, but she'll be at Hue-Man sometime next week. I am also still trudging through The Emperor of Ocean Park, though Soul City captured my interested and I'm almost finished with that too. That's my problem...I keep buying books and reading them all at the same time because I am greedy!!!

That's what am talkin' bout.....MY MAN! Thanks btw, I usually hang a nickname on most that post around here however, I've yet to do so with you. As you most surely know, by doing so, one feels close enough to the another to seal the bond and I truly hope I'm not taking you for granted. You could hate the mention of my name or never given me a secong thought. Nevertheless I shall from this day forth refer to you as simply Manuel. That not to much of a reach now is it. I assume that was painless. So Manny......opps, Manuel, I'll be on the look out for your thang. That reminds me, Kathleen Cross the nationally known motivational speaker who's appeared on several TV shows detailing her life as a black women that could be mistaken for a white person, being that her skin is white, along with other issues and who is also the author of Skin Deep, has just released her new novel, Schooling Carmen. I've been begging her for an autographed copy going on over 3yrs. Well, she couldn't hold out any longer and I am pleased to say I now have my copy in hand. Kathleen can write, even her e-mails can give one cause to sit back and reflect, I kid you not. She told me she wanted my "true" opinion of the book and so far it's a real gem. So Manuel, one of these days I hope to be posting nice things to say about you on this venue and others like B & N and Amazon. Stay up my brotha, and I'll do the same. Carey Carey |

I just finished reading Blood on the Leaves by Jeff Stetson. Should be mandatory reading. Brilliant, moving, the best mystery, courtroom drama I've read. And it's important, deals with historical issues of race and justice and black leadership that are still relevent today. This book needs to be championed by everyone that cares about quality African American literature. Let's promote this brother's work. At a time when there's so much trash, we need to support works that are intelligent, thought provoking, and substanative. Thanks Thumper for bringing it to my attention. I'm recommending it to everyone. |

Carey, I like how you beg, it's so cute. :-) J_Gordon, I bought Blood on the Leaves a while back and now that I know it's a courtroom drama, I'll have to sneak it in somewhere on my reading list. Thumper, welcome back. I haven't read most of the books you mentioned, but am looking forward to reading Distant Lover, Red Light Wives, and Ride or Die. I did however read The Blackbird Papers (had a few issues too) and Don't Want No Sugar (whew, this story was so "dark" to me), but I love Mason's writing. You mentioned that you take a break from reading; shoot, I'd love to take a break from everything else and just have a month of reading. -Tee |

Carey... It's a courtroom drama, a mystery, character study... It's just a thrilling read. Let me know what you think after you read. Don't think you'll be disappointed. I've read it twice and have been reading passages to friends. I should be getting a commission. I'm selling this book to strangers. The mystery websites are raving about it as well, and those folks are some serious critics. Enjoy. |

Hello J Gordon Hey J, You're right, you should get a commission because if I didn't know better I would have taken you for the author pretending to be an avid fan. Wow, to tell you the truth though, the post was more of a turnoff than something that would make me run out and get it. Really, we've seen similar post by ghost readers. But hey, I'm not saying you are the author but the post had that kind of flavor. |

I got an early phone call from a friend on the east coast that woke me from this dream. I was on an island with Beyonce and Halle when... Sorry, I got diverted. My friend told me I REALLY needed to check out this website. I confess, I'm old school, and I'm not very skilled at surfing the web, but I found the site right away. Unfortunately, it took me half the morning to find this posting. I'm glad I did. My name is Jeff Stetson and I wrote a novel called BLOOD ON THE LEAVES, which some of you have been kind enough to recommend. First, I want to tell you all how grateful I am for your existence. First novels don't get reviewed much, particularly if they deal with provocative material. I appeared on Tavis Smiley's P.B.S. show and that had a tremendous impact. However, if I had written a novel about black folks killing black folks, I'm sure I would've generated much more publicity. But, that too, is a subject for another discussion. Thumper, I've read about you for some time as this mysterious advocate for literature. You've done a wonderful thing. I know it consumes a great deal of time and I'm very proud to have my novel discussed on your site. Thanks so much for your personal recommendation. Emanuel, I don't know if you're the same person who wrote the review for the Midwest journal, that was posted on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you are, I've already expressed my appreciation to you some weeks ago, and now do so again, publicly. I'll be sure to buy your book when it's released. If you're not that Emanuel, then let me extend my thanks for your kind words regarding my novel. Gordon, I'm sorry you were accused of being me, there are days I wouldn't wish that on my worst critic. If it makes you feel any better, give me your address and I'll send you some bills to pay, but definitely no royalities and no commissions. If you're ever in Southern Cali, however, I'll be happy to buy you a drink. Seriously, your enthusiam for my book is incredible and means a lot to me, NO MATTER WHAT anyone else might think. (smile.) Although, you do make me a bit nervous, you've read the book and obviously my bio and interests. You're not a stalker, are you? By the way, I've been an educator for many years, anyone can write - you just have to find your voice and develop your craft. If that's what you want to do, don't give up. And to my friend, Carey, I hope you don't remain turned off and will find the time to read the novel. If you are half as enthusiastic as Gordon, or for that matter, Emanuel, I'll be very fortunate and extremely proud. On the other hand, if you don't like it, we can also have a drink, but YOU'RE BUYING! To each of you who read these postings, whether you read my novel or not, it really is important and valuable what you do. I amazed at your dedication and grateful for your efforts. I'll be in Miami next month for the International Book Festival, teaching a workshop on writing at Miami-Dade and participating at the fair. If you're in the area, please stop by and say hello. Okay, sorry for such a long posting, but the fist time is always the best. Now that I know where I can find you, I'll visit periodically and see who's zooming who. Told you I'm old school. Stay strong and informed. Keep reading, writing and taking care of each other. All the best, Jeff Stetson |

Hello Mr. Stetston, I happened to see you on the Tavis Smiley show, although it's not a show i catch very often I did see it the night you were on, and i found your story, your novel very interesting. I am, I will be buying and reading it. I really do love when black folks write a good novel, and give a different spin to a story. I really loved your title, heck, I wished i thought of it myself. That's what I do sometimes when I see a good title, I say, damn, wished I thought of that, but you have obviously done well with the title and the book and I look forward to reading it. I'm not the flashy one around here posting, but I do post from time to time, and thing I love about this place is of course, how we let it all hang out, love literature, and embrace authors. I look forward to reading your book, and hey, when my book comes out, will you buy it as well. It is due in December, or so...the title "Devil In the Mist." look forward it. Thanks. By the way, i heard you wrote a play and produced it as well, so have i. Maybe one day we can exchange stories. Peace and blessings to you. |

Well HELLO Stetson! My my, you're just the man I want to talk with. So you;ve browsed around our little corner huh. Nice spot ain't it. Oh, as you've probably already noticed, I'm NOT a writer so please excuse all the mispelled words, run on sentences, dangling dangles, shifts in POV's, dangling modifiers, faulty logic, useless repetition and boring wordiness, okay. Now, about that delicious book of yours. By no means am I turned off, I'm excited. I don't know if you had time to read everything that goes on in this little neighborhood but I .....ahhhh, I like to think of myself as a bit of a critic and since I don't get paid and my views/reviews are not "skirted" I frequently ahh.......okay, I always ask those that are brave enough and secure enough about their book if they'd mind letting me take a look at it. Some people are mean and call what I do ahhh, they say......mean things, you know, haters *smile*. Anyway, if you would like an honest and open review, give me a holler and well talk. darn1719@mchsi.com Thanks in advance, you will not regret it. |

Hello Sisgal, I didn't think anyone watched Travis Smilley. Tells you what I know. How have you been. I see you're still lurking in the wings. Didn't you have a book deal or something like that? When am I going to talk about your book? You writers have it so easy, you just wake up when you please, put down a few lines and head out for the links. Then you probably throw down a few more lines while sipping a fine cognac and then off to bed by nine. Huh, is that how it goes? |

Hi Sisq: I'll definitely look for the book. I started as a playwright, have several plays produced, the most widely known is "The Meeting" a hypothetical meeting between Malcolm X and Dr. King one week before Malcolm's murder. The title of my book comes from a lyric in Billy Holiday's famous song: STRANGE FRUIT, a moving, powerful anti-lynching song. Obviously the theme of the book deals with lynching and white folks that got away with murder. So, look, I'm glad we made contact in this internet world. I'll be looking for your work with great interestl. Best of luck to you in your writing efforts. Thanks for your good wishes and blessings, can always use them. Carey, I took your dare and e-mailed you. Look forward to your views. (I think.) To the power of the word... Jeff

It's always nice when authors are brave enough to stop by. You might be wondering why one would have to be brave to do that. Well we hav some real characters up in here and they sometimes can be sort of....... well let's just say they have a lot of time on their hands and sometimes can be a bit rude. But we mean well. Anyway, thanks again for stopping by and I'll be looking out for that e-mail. I first have to run down and pay my internet bill, I kind of forgot to ahhh, I forgot to ahhh.....go to college so that I would get a good paying job. Hello All, Jeff Stetson: How are you doing? *smile* Oh, I'm not so mysterious. I just hate having my picture taken. Thanks for the kind words. No need to thank me, thank you for writing such a wonderful book. I loved LOVED Blood On The Leaves! Don't worry about being ol' school. Carey is the principal of ol' school. He's been trying to school A_womon...but, you know, well...he got a hard row to hoe. Drop me a line at thumper@aalbc.com and I'll let you know when my review of your book will be done and published by AALBC. |

Okay everyone.....you too A_Womon, we have company. Now that don't mean we should spike his drink and then roll him either. Let's pretend that we can respect others when they grace our little spot. Isn't it brave of him to do that. Cause y'all know how Sisgal can get so let's welcome Jeff and make him feel at home. Come to think of it, we haven't had a new author drop by in some time. Well we have seen the car salesmen drive-by type that puts the bum-rush on us. But nothing or no one like Mr Stetson. Anyway, I am surprised no one has asked him questions about the trade or his book. I |

Thanks Thump, I'm glad someone has noticed the work I've put in but like you said, it's a tough job. However I must confess that's she's coming along, she's moving in the right direction. |

Mr. Stetson, please let me know how I can contact you directly. I sent a letter to your publisher and also called them and left my personal info. They said they would forward to you. No, I'm not a stalker. I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive and my friends say once I get excited about something I can be a little overbearing. I have three passions, my baby daughter, education - I just started grad school, and reading great literature. My mother was a poet, I got my passion from her but not her talent. It would mean a great deal to me to be able to write to you. I promise I won't bug you, just want to communicate directly. I already said what I think about your novel. I don't know if I agree with your views about black leadership and religion but it made me think. Your description of the black lynching photos was both frightening, sickening and incredibly beautiful. I was numb after reading it and then just broke down. Thanks for your encouragement to write but I don't have that gift. As a substitute I'll continue to read. And yes I read all that I could about you. The authors you listed have also influenced me. I won't take any more time here, but please believe me, if I could correspond with you occasionally, it would really mean more than you could imagine. Thanks in advance for your time and God bless! |

Hey Gordon: Anyone who has those three passions is someone I'd be happy to communicate with. I'll get in touch after I receive your information. Good luck with your educational efforts and remain a loving parent and avid reader. Jeff |
