The Harlem Book Fair was, as always, a wonderfully painful, and stressfully rewarding event. The number of Black authors, book buyers and industry professional assembled is the day of the street fair is simply unmatched. The potential of this event is staggering. One of my favorite Harlem Book Fair events is the Phillis Wheatley Awards -- held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. This year, the event's third, Chinua Achebe, Maryse Conde, Terry McMillan (in abstentia) and Maya Angelou were presented awards. The audiences was shock full of the literati it was really a great event. Quincy Troupe, (this year's Literary Grand Marshall) commented on how it is important for us to present awards, recognizing our own accomplishments -- rather than waiting for someone else to do it. My favorite photo from the event was this shot with Maya Angelou. Angelou was very gracious as she sat in the audience before the start of the show and chatted with everyone who approached her. It was really that kind of event -- everyone was in a good mood. AALBC.com has sold books at the book fair since 2000 and I have served on the advisory board for the last 4 years.

That's a great photo, Troy. Your kids will be fighting over that shot the moment after they put you in the ground. And I'll say you were looking kinda dapper there, playah-playah. Tell the truth: Did Maya get drunk and try to feel-you-up with her hands under your dining table? HAHA! |

ABM, no Maya managed to maintain her composure. Now if only Phyllis Yvonne Stickney would have lost hers... Chris, you mean you were showing improper respect before? I gotta a lot of catching up to do reading these boards (smile).

Hello Troy, it's always nice to see you peek in on us. Listen to me talking as if I've been tearin' up some posts. But it is good to see AND hear from you. Sometimes when I think about the ol'school members I forget that you are the Godfather .......THE OLDEST! You know, I gotta go to the book fair, it's one of my "to do thangs". I know I would enjoy myself, how could I not. Man I'll tell you, you appear to be getting younger as the years go by, really. It would be nice if we had some sort of family picture book. Hey, that thought you had about packaging some of the old posts sound great. The material is already written. You could pull up/out a few threads of varing topic and put them together and it's on. Some threads ran for a while too and were great reading. Yeah man, you got something. Ol'sckuul representin' Peace Carey |
