FYI: I received this in list in my Inbox today. The list of nominees looks pretty extensive. Anyone going to the presentation? AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERARY AWARDS SHOW ANNOUCES NOMINEES FOR ITS OPEN BOOK AWARDS The African American Literary Awards Show, Inc. announced the nominees for its First Annual Open Book Awards. African American authors and writers were nominated in 30 categories (see below). The nominees ranged from first time authors such as Erica Simone Turnipseed to celebrities like Al Roker, Patti Labelle, Beyonce and Alicia Keys to celebrated authors such as Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou to the works of deceased authors James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks and Lorraine Hansberry to civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. The breakfast ceremony was held during the Harlem Book Fair on Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Harlem, New York at Mo-Bay Restaurant Uptown. The nominees were chosen by book clubs from around the country and the AALAS advisory panel. Winners will be announced at the African American Literary Awards Shows First Annual Open Book Awards on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Alhambra Ballroom, 2116 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard (corner of W. 126th Street) at 6:00 p.m.. Additionally, two special awards will be given, The Sojourner Truth Award for Excellence in American Literature and the Publisher of the Year Award. The Sojourner Truth Award will be given to an African American who has advanced the standing of African Americans within American Literature. The Publisher of the Year Award will be given to a publishing house for its outstanding contribution to social and ethnic diversity in the publishing industry. Winners in all categories except the Sojourner Truth Award and the Publisher of the Year Award will be selected by book clubs from around the country. The winners of the Sojourner Truth Award and Publisher of the Year Award will be determined by the AALAS advisory panel. With the onset of numerous forms of media stimulating the masses, we are focused on bringing it back to the foundation, said Yvette Hayward, co-chair of the African American Literary Awards Show. By showcasing authors of all walks, the African American Literary Awards Show is geared to showcase the literary stars by presenting them to the public and demonstrating the respect that is due them. According to the publishing industry, African American consumers spend over $400 million annually on books, stated Ruth Morrison, co-chair of the African American Literary Awards Show. The AALAS Open Book Awards is an opportunity to not only celebrate and recognize African American authors and writers, but to focus more attention on this market segment as a whole. Sponsors for the AALAS Open Book Awards include: Time Warner Books, BlackExpressions.com and Barnes and Noble. Other AALAS events include an upcoming national book tour and a national literacy challenge, which is an essay contest for young people, ages 9-15. For more information about tickets to attend the AALAS Open Book Awards, contact Yvette Hayward at 646-338-3811 or, Ruth Morrison at 718-342-8177. It's a nice wide and eclectic list--they are sure to draw fire for not including The Known World--it appears that they did not limit the awards to works published or created during 2003--well, let's see what happens. Hope they give out nice prizes and have a nice awards ceremony. |

It seems like an ambitious list, but also a very random list. Why are so many old titles on the list? |

Personally, I think it's an attempt to draw a large crowd, especially celebrities. (I don't believe it takes away from the artists' accomplishments though.) This list should establish credibility and bring in major dollars to this event. I found it strange to have older titles competing with newer ones though.

What a potpurri of categories and nominees. They should've made a distinction between authors of the present and ones of the past. Who is going to accept the award if a dead author wins in their category? And can book clubs whose membership is composed mostly of women who read rather than women who write be considered credible judges?? |

I just did a google search, from the office, to get more information about this event for an author friend of mine -- and discovered this link. Thanks Emanuel for the heads up. If anyone attends please let us know how it goes. |
