Well, I’ve finally read Nichelle Tramble’s The Dying Ground and have just started The Last King. Not usually my kind of story [everybodys a little too young for me and I’m not into street/drug/gangsta stories] but she does a pretty good job of telling it and I am interested in finding out what happens.

Anyway, I remember when The Dying Ground first came out Thumper and Carey got into it about Maceo but I can’t remember what it was all about. I’ve done a search and the only thing I came up with is a short comment from Thumper saying Maceo’s grandfather was wrong for the way he treated him. I’d have to say I disagree but I can’t remember his reasoning behind his statement.

I know it’s kind of tacky to bring up some old mess but … I’m interested.

Hey Thump, do you wish to clear this up for her?

Yeah, lets get this thang right out in the open. Lets take our positions right now, before you....YOU Thump, try to but some mess in it.

Btw, when is Nichelle coming.

Crystal, I don't know how far back one can go in the archieves but Nichelle hit the board on November 4th 2001 at 22:22:29 *lol*. In fact, she penned about 4 or 5 posts that day. So, check it out and let use know what you find.

I hope Nichelle hits the board, there's a post of hers that I'd like to remind her of ......something to do with an autograph *smile*. (November 04, 2001 at 17:36:07:-)

Hello All,

Crystal: Now, you know you made my ol' Grayhead's day! *big smile* Daddy Al is his boy.

OK, here's my position on Daddy Al. In the beginning of The Dying Ground, I though Daddy Al was a pretty cool ol' dude. But after Cissy got hurt and he said what he had to say to Maceo, I came to dislike him. Here's why: there's an old saying that my mother taught me (the longer I live the more I know the truth in it) "a drunk will tell a sober thought". When Cissy got hurt, Daddy Al was basically drunk with hurt, sorrow and anger; so, he basically told Maceo how he really felt about him and his motive for getting and raising Maceo in the first place. He didn't get and raise Maceo out of any famiily duty or anything, his primary objective was to get back at Maceo's father for what his father did to his daughter! Hence the reason he sought custody of Maceo and then had Maceo's name changed. Why, to punish Maceo's father for making HIS daughter a dopehead. So with each loving stroke of Maceo's head, a part of it was a strike back at Maceo's father. Now, I'm not saying that Daddy Al didn't come to have any feelings for Maceo, he did. But let's face it, Daddy Al didn't come to the table with clean hands. What was it that he told Maceo, that he took him and Holly in like they were stray dogs and instead of guarding the master's house, they bit the hand that feed 'em, I'm paraphrasing here. Now I can understand him being hurt, and mad at Maceo and Holly, but if all the hateful things that he said to Maceo wasn't in his heart or in the back of his mind, in the first place, he wouldn't have said it.

After that, I thought and still think after reading The Last King, that Daddy Al is arrogant, stiff, and spiteful. ON the surface, he may seem like a cool cate, but underneath is the heart of a killer.

Carey, how was that? Have you read The Last King yet? You know I'm waiting. Oh, and Nichelle will be in the house in August. I'll post the date when I get home to look it up.

Boy oh boy, you sure know how to shade things don't you. I don't remember Daddy Al saying all that, and how are you going to say what's in HIS mind. You need to quite, you don't want me to post your exact words, I won't do you like that but if we carry on you'll spill the beans on The Last King, your big lips are beggin' to do so *smile*.

No I haven't read it yet, I'm waiting to hit Nichelle up for an autographed copy, I KNOW you got one.

Isn't that something how people remember our little thing from way back when. Crystal thinks shes slick stirrin' up some mess *lol*. But hey, I still luv her, she's one of the ol'school, I ain't mad at her.

I like that saying of your mothers, I think I'll borrow that one...."A drunk will tell a sober thought". You know, there is some thruth to it. How many time have we heard someone say, " oh I was drunk, I was messed up, I didn't know what I was saying". Yeah Thump, that's a good one. People say what the want to, it just needs a little push out the door. I like that, I sure do. But listen, don't make no mistake about it, I ain't saying I agree with your little cover-up, because I DON'T. It sounds good but it ain't playin' here. See, you think I'm gettin' a little older and my memory might be slippin'. That may be so but every time the clock flips on me, guess what, your behind gains another pound and you too are closer to your resting place. If you keep on living, more things will come to the light. You smart though, keep listening to your mother.....AND your ol'grayhead!

Oh and as a matter of fact, I don't have an autographed copy of The Last King. So there. If I don't have one, I don't see why you need one. *eyebrow raised* *LOL*

Ok Thumper, I see where you’re coming from but I have to agree with Carey – you may have read more into it than was there. From what I read I don’t think we can put grandaddy’s biggest motive for taking in Maceo on hatred of the father. I mean it was his hours-old grandson with a dead mother & dopehead father, what else could he do? This is one of those ol’school black men from Louisiana – family is everything to those folks. The name change and not letting the father see Maceo – yea. But that’s about it. I do agree with you though that grandpa is arrogant & stiff, not sure about spiteful. Now, you may have a case for him taking in Holly [and Cotton] because he didn’t have any sons of his own – trying to pass on his testosteronial influence and all that.

Maceo is the one that got on my nerves. What a punk! That boy had it made and didn’t even know it. I understand about him having abandonment issues but millions of people have those same issues and still manage to do what needs to be done. I think his problem is that he was babied too much.

I’ve just started The Last King and will revisit all of this when I’m done.

Carey, I luvs you too!

Stop it Crystal, you're making me blush. Am I glad you showed up. See, we need more postees like you, those that aren't affraid to tell that Thump what's real *smile*. But really, your take on Daddy Al is exactly.....EXACTLY as mine. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why ol'Thump or how Thump came to the conclusion that he did. Anyway, thank for the post and you'll have to let us know your thoughts on The Last King. But you don't have to "remove" or "excuse" yourself for reading this type of book. We are not what we read, we become better individuals because of it. In fact it's a big turn-off to me when a person sticks out their chest and tells all that they are reading "this" or "that" BAB, as if that means something, know what am saying. If that were so, what does it say when an individual reaches down while taking a ....ahhh......"relief" in the public restroom and picks up a copy of "dooky & dootle" :-)? Huh, what then shall we consider ol'pompus one?

Hey Thump, lets not confuse our wants with our needs. I want an autographed copy of The Last King. And besides, what do you have to do with this anyway *lol*. This business is between Nichelle and I, so excuse me if I don't check your cover before I put my beg on her. But if you have to know, she has already promised me one and I'm just reminding her, now. **stickin' out my tongue**

Some people......

Beside, what are you doing hanging out with us in the daytime, don't you have some papers to flip or someone to boss around. You better get back to work before you end up in the cheese line.

Hello All,

Crystal: I can't wait for you to finish The Last King. I agree with you that Maceo's actions were shady and punkish. He didn't know how good he had it. His running away from the family was just plain trifling but I believe he needed to do this in order to grow up. This issue is addressed in The Last King. I think Maceo's biggest problem was that he needed to grow up, and he did. He still has some to do, but becoming a man is not an easy feat. We'll talk later when you're done.

Carey: Let's not get it twisted. You're just happy that another person has agreed with you. *big smile* You just feeling your oats, that's all. Although, quiet as its kept, I'm surprised that you still have some and know where they are. *eyebrow raised* *LOL*

Hello All,

The great comedic actor was Della Reese and the movie was Harlem Night. "Oh, so now you want to shoot me in my pinkie toe."

Hello

I should have known you would know the answer. Yep, that's it. Although the movie didn't get great reviews, it's nevertheless a classic in my opinion. Check out some of the cast: Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Red Fox, Della, and Jasmine Guy. I'd buy Jasmine a coke and some french fries. I love the movie, there are so many memorable standout scenes.

Hey Crystal, All

I just finished reading The Last King, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had forgotten a lot of stuff from The Dying Ground, but that didn't interfere with my reading and enjoying The Last King. One thing I got from the 2nd book, Daddy Al, loves his grandson. Now when y'all ready discuss, let me know. Another thing, Maceo do love to hook up with these hardcore, on the edge woman, who don't want to be saved, but I'm still lovin it!

Hello everybody:

Finished The Last King – I enjoyed it. I thought it was more of a murder mystery than the Dying Ground. Thanks for your comments Sisgal. I don’t know where Thumper is getting his ideas about Daddy Al.

Yes, Maceo did grow up some in this one, as did some of the other characters. I can’t remember the names right now and don’t have the book with me but that guy that spoke in “raps” and the mother of Maceo’s “little brother” – she cracks me up!

Anybody know if more Maceo Murders are coming? I hope so!
