I thought about putting this over on the culture thread but Superman is a fictional character, even if he is from like the bottom rung of the artistic heap (trashy filthy comic books!) They are planning another Superman movie and are casting. I say Superman is a fictional character, totally made up and he could be anything anybody wants (some have found evidence that he is Jewish, by the way) If they decided to cast a Black man As Superman, would you go see it? Or would this offend you? |

Chris, I think African Americans would enjoy a Black depiction of the Superman legend. But it is unlikely we will witness a cinematic version of such anytime soon, because White movie distributors and producers would not countenance such. BTW: Superman & Batman (Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel) and Spider-Man, the Hulk, X-Men, Captain America, etc. (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby). were all created by Jews. In fact, Superman's birth name Kal-El is Hebrew for "All That is God." |

Abm: Who caes what they want! Black Superman or we boycott the theaters! Make my day! Read "The Great Comic Book Heroes" by Jules Fieffer. This supposedly was an injoke in the industry--and he presents as evidence that Superman was Jewish by the fact that his creators were Jewish, but also in the idea that he represents a Jewish power fantasy (he found it in that the Clark Kent character wears glasses and is meek (a Jewish stereotype) and his hair is comb back and straight and that the Superman character's hair is curly (like that of many Jews) and his is everything the Jewish stereotype is not--tall, big strong, powerful, colorful, attractive to women, etc. Also in the first Superman stories his politics were leftist (as were those of many Jews in the 30's)--he fought crooked arms merchants, lynch mobs, wife beaters, stopped wars in other countries, halted unjust executions, crooked mine owners, crooked boxing promoters, etc. All the other heroes you mention are much more goyish.

Chris, Ok. I'll bite. Who do you have in mind for the lead role? The brother who plays a cop on "NYPD Blue" (sorry, I don't know his name) 'looks' like he could could be done-up as a Black 'Supes'. For a guy who doesn't care much for comic books, you sure are acquainted with their history. |

Morris Chestnut as Superman, and that chick that played Eva in "Deliver Us From Eva", Gabrielle Union as Lois Lane? Or anybody as Superman and Gabrielle Union!Or just Gabrielle Union and Gabrielle Union! I just love mean women. I think mean women got the best........I think I said in another thread, "If the broad is bitcy then the booty is bitchin'" or somethin' like that. "The bitchier the babe, the better the booty"??? Anyway, Gabrielle Union always playing them 'gotta put a brotha in his place' roles...You know them 'better check him 'fore I wreck him' chicks. Oooh! Her attitude makes me HOT!!!!!!!!!!!! Tttsssssssss! |

Lambd, Chestnut is too short. Plus, he's a bit too well-known to be convincing as 'Supes'. The actor who portray Superman should not have so much prior work history that it distracts from creating an authentic character. But I will second your Gabrielle Union selection as Lois Lane. She's a fine actress and foine woman to boot. |

Abm: To quote Louis Pasteur, one must study a pestilence before one can properly eradicate it-- I was thinking about Vin "Flash in the Pan" Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Will "Mr. Jada Pinkett" Smith or Michael Clarke. |

Keep in mind that Lois Lane was not Superman's counterpart, she was Clark Kent's. Gabrielle is too statesque and glamourous for the Lois Lane role. Someone more petite and vulnerable should play this reporter who has a school-girl crush on Superman. |

Could Vin Diesle ever pull off the role of being meek, mild-mannered Clark Kent? The Rock might be able to, and certainly Will Smith could. Michael Clarke would make a good villain. |

Chris, That "pestilence" quip was funny. HAHA! But to you choices I offer the following: Diesel - Not 'Black' enuff The Rock - Same as above Will Smith - Too goofy Clarke(Duncan) - Too ugly Cynique, I would agree with you if we were talking about when the late George Reeves donned the red & blue tights in the 1950's TV serial. But today someone with Union's physical presence could provide a convincing modern portrayal of Lois Lane. |

I don't agree, Abm. We are not casting for Wonder Woman, we are casting for someone to complement the lead character of Superman. You seemed to be overlooking the super man movies with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. |

Cynique: A younger Angela Bassett would have been a great Wonder Woman. Maybe Venus or Serena Williams if they could act. |

Serena has appeared in a made for cable TV movie, and also guest-starred on Damon Wayans' "My Wife and Kids" TV series. Believe it or not, she managed to be very convincing in both apperances. |

Cynique, It is a different time, Baby. The first Reeve/Kidder Superman movie was released over 25 years ago. So I am not sure they are culturally relevant. And Kidder's Lane was a pretty tough gal. Also, do you really think a 'Black female' who managed to rise to the position of the "ace reporter of a major metropolitan newspaper" would be a "petite and vulnerable" type? No, I think she would have to be a pretty gutsy, strong-willed lady, which is consistent with Union's screen persona. I'm all for one of the Williams sister, especially Serena, donning that Wonder Woman garb. (YUMMY!) |

Well, to me, Superman loses its charm if it takes place in another era. An origignal black super hero and a kick-butt sista instead of a black version of Superman and Lois Lane would seem to fit your expectations better. |

Too big. Ving Rhames and Michael Clarke Duncan would make great villains like C-neek said. But you need someone with a muscular but lean physique to play superman. Someone like Omar Epps would be able to play a mild mannered Clarke Kent/Superman. I've seen him in both types of roles. (Regular guy and action guy) I'm afraid that Abm is right on point about Gabrielle Union though. Of course the script would have to be written to fit the times, but Union would be great as the star reporter and girlfriend of Superman. Smart and sexy, but vulnerable. Are any of you familiar with Luke Cage? He was a black comic book hero when I was growing up and he was "three hundred pounds of pure muscle" Now Ving Rhames or Mike Duncan could pull that off. Luke Cage had that no-nonsense street persona that's tailor-made for Ving Rhames. Remember 'Baby Boy'? |

Lambd, I remember Luke Cage. He (along with his young White companion Iron Fist) was one of my favorites comic book heroes. I kinda like Rhames as a possible Luke Cage. He definitely has the tuff-talkin', a$$kickin' persona of the "Powerman". BTW: Actor Nicholas Coppola was such a fan of Marvel 70's-80's superpowered soulbrothah that he adopted the stage name 'Nick Cage'. |

And Clarke Duncan had the ONLY redeemable performance ("Kingpin") in Ben "No Acting" Affleck's Daredevil. |

Who said we always have to talk about "literature?" This thread was originally about the genre of comic book fiction, and how a certain super hero would translate into the media of films. |

Thank you Cynique: I stated when I started this thread that I wrestled with whether or not to post it in culture, and decided that since Superman is a fictional character--appearing in literature of a sort--comic books, this would fit here. Maybe it is an interdisciplinary topic. You know, I am encouraged by the responses that I have gotten here. I have broached this subject on another discussion board. A BLACK one. Somebody brought up they were casting for another Superman movie. I think, what the hell. This ain't the life of Emile Zola. Superman is a fake character. How about casting a black man. People reacted with horror. Hey, this is a comic book cartoon character, people. Somebody else suggested that, even though Superman is a fake, comic book, cartoon character that can be anything (I have seen him be a bunny, a mouse, a wacky Bizarro character) that, for even some Black people he has gotta be white. Folks can see a black man as a slave owner in the South, as Jesus,MacBeth as the President of the United States, but not Superman! What is that saying? Or should I switch to the decaf? |
