Hello All, I finally finished A History of the African-American People (proposed) by Strom Thurmond as told to Percival Everett & James Kincaid (that title is more than a notion). The novel, and it is a novel, is a humurous grab bag of memorable characters assembled in a story that manages to look at race and offers a hilarious inside look of what goes on behind ghost writing a book. I have to admit that there were one of two spots where the reading got slow. I laughed a lot throughout the novel. One of the unique elements of the novel is the authors Everett and Kincaid used themselves as characters in the novel. Easily one of the best books of the year. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1888451572/aalbccom-20 |

Hey Thumper, I have to admit I'd passed by this one a few times thinking it wouldn't be something I'd enjoy, but based on your comments changed my mind and gave it a read. I was pleasantly surprised and also found it to be a good laugh. I also found the memo / letter approach quite refreshing. It made for an interesting read. |

I just recently read about this (after a profile in a recent Poets & Writers issue) and can't wait to read it. Everett is one of my favorite authors, odd condsidering that I only read one of his books. I've read several of his interviews and love his take on Black literature and authors. I'll have to clear about a dozen books from my dusty pile before I can get to this though. |
