Who is going to BEA in Chicago, let me know. I'd like the AALBC.com fam to hookup for dinner, drinks -- something. Reply to this post and we'll schedule a time and venue in advance. For those who don't know what Book Expo America (BEA) is, visit http://bookexpoamerica.com. |

Troy, According to the site BEA is for publishers, booksellers, librarians and those who are interested in purchasing rights. Will there be authors there that we will be able to purchase books from? And if so who? |

Eviana: If you are an avid reader you probably have a great time. You'll find scores and scores of authors signing free, recently published, books. The authors run the Gamut from first time self published authors to major literary figures. Don't be put off by the $110 fee, many people end up shipping all of the books they acquire over the multi-day event. Even if you can't make BEA, try to hook up with us. All, lets pick a time, day that does not conflict with the AA events. I thinking or dinner or after dinner gathering. What would be the best day, time? Do any of you Chicagoans have a suggestion for a venue?

Troy, although I really don't have a vested interest in attending the BEA events, I'd still like to meet you and Thumper. As far as a Chicago venue for a hook-up, I can't come up with anything because I don't hang out in Chicago that much any more. But I believe Mike Evans, who posts here from time to time, is from Chicago and he seems to be up on things. Maybe he can supply some input. |

Linda/Akaivyleaf et al, I'll be looking forward to seeing you guys as well as the rest of the crew. Cynique, come on out and play girl. <wink> The AA Booksellers Luncheon is Thursday and I don't think there's anything planned Thursday night, that may work or is that too early in the week? The BlackBoard Reception is an alternate if we can't find another location for dinner/drinks or maybe a central hotel's bar area? Troy, keep us posted. I can ask some of RAW's Chicago members or the local chapter about venues as I'm not familiar with the area. Just let me know. -Tee |

Hey Troy/Tee/Aka/everyone: There is also an African American authors reception from 5:30 to 8:00 in room S501 on thursday evening. How about drinks or dinner afterwards? Cynique - I hope you decide to come out and play. I would love to finally meet you. LOL |

Linda, although I won't be attending the exhibition, I would be interested in making the after set to meet and greet. In case Troy is interested in doing his own thing, I've been informed that The Wishbone in Chicago'a downtown area is a really cool, trendy eatery where you can reserve accomodations. |

I got an evite for the African American Booksellers Conference (AABC) Luncheon held at BookExpo America, the premiere event serving the United States publishing industry on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 11:30 a.m., McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago, IL. Try this link: http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=CEZGIOSXQUYJDEWIHXCU Cynique the Wishbone sounds as good as any other place. The last place I hung out during a Chicago BEA -- shots were fired (it didn't even put a damper on the evening), so I'm pretty much open to anything. Hanging out after the reception is a good idea. How does everyone else about that? Would say 9, 9:30PM at he Wishbone be OK? Any other suggestions? Tee, sure let us know what your Rawsistaz connections in Chicago have to say.

Which night is this Troy? To my understanding, there will be more than one reception going on geared toward the AA Literary Community. I'll get back with you after talking to the Chi-Town RAWSISTAZ President, but if Cynique recommends Wishbone, perhaps we should just go with that, especially if it's in the vicinity of the BEA site. -Tee |

By all means check with some of your Chicago contacts about other places besides The Wishbone, Tee, because Wishbone actually is not that close to McCormick place. And since there are so many other receptions maybe I can just catch up with you guys at one of these events. |

What time does the Metra/CTA stop running? I'm actually going to be staying with relatives in Wisconsin and riding the Metra into Chicago every day. I can't stay too late if the Metra is going to stop running at a certain time, I need to be on the last train out... or bunk with someone if we decide on a super late night. |

Now that I think about it, places for holding private get-togethers are probably available within the McCormick Place complex. It is a convention center and should provide these kind of accomdations. The popular Wish Bone restaurant I originally recommended because it features a kickin' soul food menu really is not conveniently located. (But it is right down the street from Harpo Studios where Oprah's show originates.) |

Funny you should ask, Eviana. I attended a taping of the show some time ago. That was back when she used to go down in the audience with a microphone and ask questions. That particular day the subject of racism came up. I raised my hand to make a comment and she finally got around to me. When I began by saying that racism was institutionalized, a white guy agreed with me and she snatched the microphone away from me and stuck it in his face to get his comment. I impulsively reached for the microphone to finish what I was saying and she drew back and told me to get my own talk show! I understand nowadays that the audience is coached before Oprah comes out, and encouraged to give her a standing thunderous ovation. People who seem particlarly awe-struck by her majesty are placed in strategic positions to allow for close-up camera shots of their adoring grinning faces. But - dats our girl. You can't argue with success... Hummm. |

I don't know whether I'd make a good talk show host, Rondall, because I'm too argumentive, and tend to be unimpressed with celebrities, 2 things that don't make for being a very good interviewer. (BTW, loved your last poem) |

Okay, I'm back. I just looked at the calendar and wow, BEA is NEXT week! I really thought it was week after next. This goes to show I just have too much going on I can't keep up with the dates. :-( So, Troy/Thumper...what are we doing? Where are we meeting and all that. Unfortunately, I can't make Thursday night because that is the time they give us to set up our booths, so I'll be hard at work during that time. If I miss you guys, I'll be sure to look for you at the BlackBoard Reception on Saturday night, and we can hang out like we did last year. It's being held at the Congress Plaza Hotel starting at 7:30. -Tee
