Stories about African-American families rarely shed light on the abiding affection between a father and his children. But that relationship is at the core of Bridgett Davis' debut novel, Shifting Through Neutral.

The tale is told by Rae, a young black girl growing up in Detroit, as she watches her parent's marriage fall apart. It's a tale of a complicated black family, at once familiar, yet wholly unique -- thanks to Davis' singular voice and her skill with emotions and real motivations.
