Established publishers have been slow to notice the growing demand for fiction aimed at black audiences. In their absence, a number of upstarts have filled the gap. 'Vette, This may, in the long-run, prove to be the vanguard of the very BEST thing to ever happen to Black writing and literature. Let's hope they don't do like MANY other Black businesses have done: Sell-out to others for PENNIES on the dollar. |

This article reminds me of the early days of Hip-Hop, when the mainstream said it was a fad that wouldn't last. Hip-Hop artists couldn't get record deals so they pressed their own records. After they starting selling millions of records, the industry came sniffing around and signing artists. The same metamorphosis is happening in the publishing industry. Black writers who were once rejected by the mainstream started their own publishing companies and sold tons of books on their own. Then the mainstream came sniffing around again. There's still a lot of work to be done in the African-American self-publishing world, including the need for better editing, cover art, and other quality control issues. Still it's nice to see us making our own way by reviewing our own books (like AALBC does), using our own bestseller lists (like the Essence list), and creating our own means to sell (like using Paypal or even the neighborhood beauty salon) when the mainstream doesn't accept us. |
