Hello All,

I can't not believe that I'm reading a BET book. Never thought that I would live that day. The book is Playing With Destiny by Phillip Thomas Duck. The beginning of the book is good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the book is as good. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thumper, do you have an aversion to BET books, and if so, why?

Hello All,

Dmello: Yes, I do have an aversion to BET books because all of their books are about the same damn thing, either a sista girlfriend can't find a man and then she gets one; or another sista girlfriend got a man and can't keep him. And frankly between me and you, the writing is substandard to say the least.

BUT Playing with Destiny is truly the exception. It's a wonderful, wonderful novel! I strongly recommend it! Maybe there's hope for BET after all.

Ouch! As a newer BET author I'm finding it interesting that my writing and that of other new authors has immediately been characterized as substandard without our work having even been read. Granted, I am writing for their romance line so obviously my storylines are going to be about "sista girlfriend" looking for and finding a man, but I would like to believe I also bring something else to the table as well. I'm glad you found Playing With Destiny an exception. Perhaps if you gave a few others a chance you might find that not ALL of BET's books are about the same damn thing.

Dmello

Now, I'm curious with your comment and stand for the "new" authors of BET. What is the title of yours or has it been released so that others can determine what you bring to the table and form our own opinon.

Hi Linda,
My last release for BET's Arabesque line is titled, The Right Side of Love. And I would welcome your comments and critique. I also have two previous releases, Take Me To Heart and A Love for All Time. (Deborah Fletcher Mello)

Now,I understand that some readers who are not avid romance fans approach romance writing with some preconceived notions about the quality of that writing. I admit to having done so myself in the past. What I found interesting about Thumper's comment was that it isn't the first time I've heard people denounce a BET book and be critical of the writing. What is most interesting is that these opinions are based on past authors, past books, and newer authors with more recent releases are automatically penalized as not being able to write quality material. Someone may not like my writing and there may be those who do feel its "substandard", but clearly, how can judgement be passed when the work has never been read.

Well, I can't speak for Thumper and in all fairness you are right. In my opinion, you both are. Though it is unfair to group all of the authors from the same publishing house, if that house has been doing nothing more than printing mediocre stories, it soon puts a damper on wanting to read anything they produce. So for all the new authors it will be hard once they sign with this publisher. They are under suspect as to whether their story is any better. However, I will pick up one of your titles to draw my own conclusion. LOL. Much continued success to you.
