Re: Request to bloggers (http://www.thumperscorner.com/cgi/discus/show.cgi?tpc=1&post=20983#POST20983): My blog is "Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast" http://blog.lib.umn.edu/perry032/impossible/ Main focus is graduate school life, and my attempts to balance personal, family, political, and academic commitments. I write frequently about things I have read, and have a series of posts today that link to aalbc.com and Thumper's Corner. Would appreciate any feedback and community--especially from fellow grad and prof students of color. Thanks! |

My latest writing project has been working on a weekly blog titled "Countdown...365 Days to a Book Deal." It's a blog with the spirit of Reality TV. Check it out when you get a chance at www.bloglines.com/blog/emanuelcarpenter/. |

All the blogs I am interested in reading are hard to keep track of, even with RSS feeds, blogrolls and whatnot. Anyone interested in (and, more importantly, knowledgeable about) setting up a "web ring" of blogs focussing on similar content? Other such clearinghouses exist (e.g., Black Bloggers Association), but maybe one more focussed on the writing process would be in order. |

Do disrespect intended. But can someone explain to me WHY I should be especially excited about this whole blogging phenomenon? |

ABM, no need to get excited if you don't want to! LOL! The majority of blogs out there I find pretty stupid--a lot of "I went to a party last night and got so drunk and saw so-and-so" or a lot of pontificating about the latest short-attention-span news story on Fox/CNN/etc. But I love the fact that through blogs I can read about the experiences of folks I would never get to meet otherwise. I have been pretty root-less in my recent existence as I attempt to complete one degree or another, so it's nice to feel a sense of community--even if only "virtual." As for writing a blog, I LOVE that this kind of writing makes my (previously) private research and personal journaling a little more public, making me more accountable and intentional in what I write. I can also post more personal/family things to my site, which my family members and friends--flung far and wide across the country--can tune into at their convenience. (I'm not a phone person.) Recently a friend who I hadn't seen in 10 years or so "found" me through my blog and we have been able to reconnect. The ease and speed of publication is also a plus. Anyone can get a nice looking site up and running in a few minutes with very little technical skill. Anyone can maintain that site with only a couple hours effort each week (or month, or however often you want to post to it), from wherever they can get an internet connection. And, my university offers hosting to faculty, students, and staff for free! Anyway, that's why I like blogs/blogging. Your mileage, as they say, may vary! |

Yvette, I should think it obvious that I am ALWAYS on the make for getting “excited”. Hehe! But seriously, I was querying why all the hubbub over blogging because although it’s being billed as some revolutionary form of discourse/media, to me it seems just another excuse to clog up the net with a lot of random triviality. |

Yeah, ABM, there's lots of "random triviality" in the blogosphere. But a surprising amount that is worth reading. Like everything, depends on your tastes, what you're into, what you manage to luck up on, etc. My main frustration is that it is also billed as a great way to create "community" and have intelligent discourse--mainly through the comments and linking-back options that blogging provides. But not so many folks seem to be able to do this effectively. Reminds me of something I read about the internet in general, about it being like open-mic poetry reading night at the local coffee house: everyone comes to read; no one comes to listen... |
