Hey all, I'm fairly new to the discussion boards though I did stop in a few times on the old boards. Unfortunately, I don't know everyone, but I look forward to getting to know you all through your posts as I hope to be an active participant as time allows. I recognize a few folks, but I hope some of the others will introduce themselves...especially the authors who may not be using their actual names. I'd like to ensure that I have your books (the book addict in me.)

For my introduction...I am known online as Tee C. Royal. I am married, a new mother to 9 month old Joy and I live in Alabama. I'm a former Captain in the Air Force, but turned in my bars in July to be a full-time Mom. I'm an avid reader with an addiction to books, journals, magazines or anything else detailing reading or writing. I'm also the founder of The RAWSISTAZ Online Book Club which stands for Reading and Writing and I love reaching out and supporting our AA Writers.

I'll end there, but I look forward to sharing great books with each of you!!

Welcome and hello,

Glad you've chimed in on all the discussions. I missed this board while it was down. My name is Bayou Lights, I live in Newport Beach, California (great weather today) read like a crazy person (they hold new books for me at the local library), and I am a film buff. Most recently I saw Lord of the Rings, Chicago, Gangs of New York, Adaptation and this afternoon I am doing a double feature of Narc and 25th Hour.

I knew your name was familiar when I saw it. I have visited Rawsistaz, was actually very excited about it but thought the rules of membership were a little too strict. I know the rules are in place to ensure an active board but the minimum postings started to feel like an obligation. Do you have any plans to make it a little more casual like aalbc? Not a criticism, mind you, just a question.

And congrats on the new baby.

Happy New Year

whoa! I'm also new to aalb. I'm from the Harlem and the Bronx, New York. I love knowledge, especially literature. I love poetic or lyrical prose, as well as intellectual fiction. Recently, Meshell Ndegeocello's last Cd has inspired me to read more poetry. I think literature, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, has helped me understand myself and the diversity of the black experience better, much better than history books have.

Hey Bayou and Yukio...thanks for introducing yourselves. It's great to "know ya"...

Bayou, thanks for your comments on membership to RAWSISTAZ. It's something I hope that people find with just the right amount of rules to make it comfortable. It's possibly my mind frame, but I have worked hard setting things up in my groups to have people come in, steal the ideas and use them as their own...that's hard on a sista that spends at least 10-15 hrs a day working on RAWSISTAZ related stuff. So, the major issue that a lot of people have with the group is that I unsubscribe new members if I don't hear from them within a month. Personally, I think it's reasonable, but I do realize folks aren't going to be as committed as I am to my own group.

But to answer your question, we do have message boards also (like these) that you can post freely on. I just feel that if you join a book club that you should want to participate in our discussions and read the books of the month, but you'd be surprised.

We did launch a RAW-2 group that will probably be less formal. I haven't had much time to focus on it, but if you're interested...I could send you more info...as well as the info for our message boards. (My site is currently down for a face-lift and will relaunch later this month.)

Thanks for the feedback though...I appreciate it.

Hello Tee C

Ann and I are from Iowa, yes there are black folk in Iowa *smile*. Ann is the real reader in the family. Just as Booby Brown said he can "sing" but his wife Witney sangs! I read, but she lives to read. We've been visiting this baord almost since it's inception and don't know what we would have done without it. In the past most of the members were east of the MIssissippi but I see that Bayou is from the west coast. I've always wondered why we didn't get more involvement from the West coast. There was another member named Mecca that was from Oakland but no others....uuuumm. There are others from the midwest like Chris from St Louis and Thumper from Indianapolis. Some are from NC like Claxton and Sis. E. and of course my girl Ta Bonne Fee is from Ohio. I don't know what's up but she's been posting as Jennifer as of late. There must be a new man in her life or something *LOL*. Men do that to you guys, make you change-up your whole thang *smile*.

By the way, I too was in the Air Force, I had a ball. What was your AFSC? I know you got to see the world, what country did you like the best. I hated Japan.

Thanks for stopping by Thunper's Corner.

Carey said: "Ann and I are from Iowa, yes there are black folk in Iowa"

----
Aahhahahha, now you KNOW that was the first thing I thought while reading, but am glad you cleared it up for me. <grin> It's a pleasure to meet both you and Ann...she sounds like my kind of person. I think if I had to choose between a book and food, the book would win.

And thanks also for letting me know where everyone is from. I was born in OH, raised in AR, went to college in LA and am now stuck in the Boonies, AL...ROFL, in between two big cities, but 45 minutes from a bookstore. Whew...thank God for Amazon.com!!! I'm also a hop away from Atlanta, so I try to go once a month or every other month.

As for the Air Force, that was a bit bittersweet for me. I hated what I did, but I really couldn't bare the idea of putting Joy in daycare. LOL. I was in the Communications-Computer Field, AFSC 331SC...I worked as a Project Manager in the Software Development field for the majority of my time in...and I also served a stint as an Exec...that was pretty cool. As far as traveling...LOL, I didn't. I've always wanted to be close enough to home that I could get there within a days notice if I had to, so I passed up on opportunities to go overseas and probably would be headed there now with no choice had I stayed in. I miss it...especially the benefits...and the dang commissary...not to mention the pay check, but I also love being a full time Mom, wife, and book junkie extraordinaire. Ahahha.

Where else did you go? I have a friend who LOVED Japan...I think she's there now for a second tour. I can't believe I stayed stateside...MS - VA - MS - AL...dang shame huh? Oh well.

Thanks again for the intro. I look forward to hanging out with you guys! It's been fun so far..

Hey Tee ... I did post here under ta bonne fée, but I have decided that in 2003, I would simply be me, Jennifer (yep, there are a few of us witht his name). I did a BRIEF stint at RAWSISTAZ. Unfortunately, I signed up right about 2 minutes past busy and couldn't keep up. I don't know where Carey (aka Big Bruh) get his info, but there is no NEW man. I actually lost interest in this board when there were one two many psychotic folk stalking each and every strand. But, I missed my Big Bruh and the goings on here so I decided to jump back in.

I am an elementary school teacher (coming out the classroom for the 2003-2004 school year) and a former Marine (oorah!). I USED to read about 5 books a month but the profession reading took over the last two years so that I could venture into other pastures.

I do reside in Columbus, Ohio. Where did you live during your "tour" here?

NOW, I'm ready to get back into the reading thing and post until my little heart's content (if I can EVER get use to this new format!)so...what's a good read to start with?

Hello Jennifer

I'm with you, this new format still has me stumped at times. You know I always print off posts that I think Ann would like to read but with this new format it's not very simple. You have to know what page your on and how far down the page the post you want to print is at and all that mess. So now I have to either call Ann down to my messy little office space and let her brow beat me about it or long hand a post. It's a drag.

Tee C. I really enjoyed Southeast Asia. Your money grew and the people wanted us to be there. I felt the japanese to be snobs who could care less if we spent a dollar and really didn't want us there. But of course the BIG BOMB made that possible. I wonder what life would be like if they won the war.....whew. As you know, being a flyboy we could jump on a hop and go anywhere in the world and I took advantage of that. I worked in personal (AFSC732) so you know I had a little pull. You didn't want to mess with someone who could send your butt to Iceland or some remote radar site in Wyoming *smile*.

Australia and New Zealand wasn't bad. I really liked the PI and Thailand.

Does anyone know how to determine what page a post is on? How do you print a post under this new format?

LOL Jennifer, your post is funny sis...but it's good to connect again. Sometimes I go on no mail on my own group cuz it's too much to handle sometimes...but that's our secret mmmmmkay?

And I was born in Cincinnati...was never there on tour though. Lastly, I'ma let my Marine joke slide until I "know" ya better. Ahahha...you know how it is when different branches get around each other. I tease my hubby all the time cuz he was Navy.

Carey , dang you've been EVERYWHERE...how long were you in? And whew...ya dang right about not messing with anyone in personnel...

*LOL* Tee C., Yep you didn't want to mess with anyone in "personal" or Personnel. With my no spelling self I bet some people ended up in places they've never dreamed of. Some poor guy might have wanted to go to Toledo USA and I might have made a mistake and sent him to Tobelo Indonesia. Or some poor slob simply wanted to go home to Troy NY and I sent him to Troyes France, you never know *smile*.

Come on let's here the Jar Head...I mean Marine joke, Lil'sis can handle it, she's a Marine.

See Tee... Big Bruh THANKS he knows his lil sis (come on with the Jarhead jokes, all I got to say is YOU married a squid!!!) The "tour" reference was just a little joke (not a very good one at that!) For real for real (I have too many teenaged children!!), I'm not thinned-skinned especially when it comes to the Marines. The only thing that I take exception to is when folk come in here (NO REFERENCE TO YOU HERE!! ...Carey knows of what I speak) and jump on my family!

AND ... your secret is safe with me (mail ref!) ...welcome to our family!

Hello Jennifer

Dang, I feel funny calling you that. .. Anyway, Ann worked on a book for you all day and thought you'd like Harlem Redux if you haven't read it. She's also reading a book called Breaking Away by Kristen Lattany that she says is looking like a keeper. You haven't hit the board in a few so she didn't know where your reading had taken you. As you know she isn't stuck in any genre although mystery and suspense are her favorites. Anyway, she just finished ....listen to this, Princess Sister by Sheila Copeland (not a bad read, would recommend). She hasn't started on Kola's Book yet. Kola was nice and sent her a copy. I think she and our daughter is going to read it at the same time. So, I don't know if I helped at all but it's what been happening on this reading front. Although there are others I don't mention the non AA writers on this board, as Thump used to say, they get enough press.

For sure I know what you mean about folks dropping in and not respecting the place.
You know I've ALWAYS liked that in you. If you're down with someone, you're down with'em. Ain't no funny business with you, I've never had to worry about that. We haven't had to show our A** in some time, lets hope it stays that way in the trey.....2003 that is, huh.

Gonna be gone a few days, so I'll see ya when I see ya.

Thump ... you know I ALREADY agreed with you ONCE in this lifetime, don't count on it again, mah brotha! I really missed you all but I couldn't take the silliness that some folk wanted to roll around in. BUT, you can count on me now to proffer my two cents worth without being asked! (I'm over here rollin my eyes thinking, "This post with all its apostrophes is lookin like a Baisden novel" ... oops, did I say that??

Carey ... give Miss Ann a BIG hug and kiss for me (and ask her to give you a BIG hug and kiss for me). I was serious when I said I have read NOTHING aside from professional material. I'm so needy for some good fiction I can't hardly stand it! (There I go with those dang things again!) I'm going to run by the bookstore tomorrow to purchase at least one of those suggestions.

AND, you can call me T-bone. I know it's killing you NOT to... tee hee

Can I jump in here an introduce myself? I'm Sharon and I'm originally from East St. Louis, Illinois but made the transition to Atlanta about 13 years ago, so I'm a transplant. I've never been in the service although I was really close to going into the Marines. Had a ship date and everything until my Grandmother had a classic hissy fit, and that was that.

I'm an avid reader, I've spent the great majority of my life reading. Some of my most vivid memories were reading trashy romance novels in my back yard, during light rain storms. Don't ask me why I would "lay out" and read these books (and ruin them), maybe it was because growing up a preacher's kid, the books weren't allowed in the house in the first place.

I have vivid memories of everybody in my family reading, its a natural thing for me to always have a book about. I went to college, majored in Philosophy (lots of reading) and Elementary Education (yup, taught reading).

I come to this board, to get the latest greatest book to read, although I admit I don't participate in discussion a lot. I've slowly but surely have become an almost exclusive reader of African American literature and find it very fulfilling.

I'm mainly a lurker but this year I plan to expand my participation in all the groups I'm a member of.

One other thing, my user name is akaivyleaf. For those of you that know, I'm a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and proclaim it everywhere I go.

Hey Sharon, good to see a familiar face...and sisgal...glad to hear you're in Atlanta, I'll definitely have to look both of you up the next time I'm there. I may try to make it Saturday for Linda Dominique Grosvenor's book party, but it's looking kinda iffy since I haven't finished the work needed to re-launch my site. But I'll let you know!

Now for the prior-miliary crew, I forgot my Marine joke, Jennifer!! And now there's an army person too? Umph, umph, umph. If we ever meet up, it's gonna be a sight. And yep, hubby is a squid...ahaha. And Carey I hope you're having (had) a nice trip, I looked over your typos cuz I know what'cha meant, but I did have my red pen out...ROFL...j/k. (Jennifer, your post makes me wanna pick up a Baisen novel just to see what's up with the apostrophes.)

Thanks everyone for the introductions...I feel like I know ya better now. <wink>

Hello My People and Skeewee to my Sorors!

I feel so very fortunate to have found you guys; you all are my best virtual friends.

::tearing up::sniffing::blowing nose hard:::

OK, I'm fine now.

I've been an avid reader for years, I can remember taking a book almost everywhere I went as a teenager--I think reading somehow helped me cope with teenage angst <sp>
I did my Master's thesis (Library Science-UNCG) on Bibliotherapy for Children--that was years ago too!

I live in NC with my hubby and 10 year old daughter. It is like pulling teeth to get that child to read novels! She has to read 10 books and get 20 points in accelerated reader books for school. She does however read Nickelodeon magazine and Right On magazine--can you believe they still publish that? I read it when I was a kid too.

Ok, so in addition to "real books", I actually have a few ebooks on my PDA that I am reading. I also have a magazine addiction and a huge house porn collection, i.e. Home Magazine, Metropolitan Home, Elle Decor, etc.

I'm glad to have a place where I can openly address my reading/book addiction--even though you guys are really enablers :-)

Hey Peeps!

Crystal here with further representation of the West Coast - "L.A. is my home town it's a funky town". Born, raised and hope to stay. I have a 19 year old son who is really working my nerves just now but his dad died last year so I'm trying to give him a break but . . .

I work at USC and am a UCLA alum so I'm hiding out in my office today after last night's basketball fiasco [Lavin MUST go! We Want Bibby! We Want Bibby!].

One of my best Christmas memories is from when I was 11 and my Mom gave me a subscription to American Girl magazine. That's when I realized she knew how much I loved to read. My Dad's standard reply when anyone asks about me is "she's somewhere with her face stuck in a book".

Hi, Tee...I see you've already met some of the more grizzled veterans of the board. Allow me to introduce you to one more--me.

I've been a regular on the board now for about four years. My contributions usually focus on science and technical fiction, and as the old heads will verify, I'm constantly on the watch for good science and technical fiction written by African-American authors. It's not unusual to see me discussing the genre, especially with Chris Hayden, who, though he disagrees with my point of view, never fails to give me wonderful nuggets of knowledge to chew on. My favorite authors include Tom Clancy and Lois McMaster Bujold, though I also like Ben Bova, John Grisham and Margaret Truman. About the only author I won't read is William Faulkner, a man who couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag with the directions.

When I'm not reading--something that I've slowed down on a bit since getting married three years ago--I enjoy playing video games (Sega rules!) and coming to Thumper's Corner. I also enjoy writing, but recently abandoned a decade-long attempt to write a disaster novel. Nowadays, I typically write quizzes on Fun Trivia.com, a great website that includes quizzes on just about every subject imaginable.

That's about all for me. Look forward to seeing more from you on the board!

Hey Claxton et al! Thanks for the introductions. I'm a big fan of sci-fi as well, but haven't read much lately. I do however love watching the shows on the Sci-Fi channel the times that I actually watch TV.

Who are some AA sci-fi authors that you'd recommend?

Tee, I've fallen really hard for Lois McMaster Bujold. She's not an AA author, but she's darned good. The multi-novel Vorkosigan saga is some of the best reading I've ever done. I haven't read all the books in the saga just yet, but I'm working on it.

As far as AA sci-fi authors, I don't have any current recommendations. I'm waiting for someone to write a good disaster novel, though, in the tradition of "The Towering Inferno" or "The Poseidon Adventure". Unfortunately, that's not a market we've managed to tap yet.

Hi all I'm Chris. I have'nt posted in a long time but this is one of my favorite websites. I'm librarian in Detroit so I am around books all the time and lately some good stuff (IMHO) has come out so I really started to get back into and enjoy reading especially the work of our folks!! One of the things I enjoy is that I am able to direct some of my younger readers who are waiting for Coldest Winter Ever part two to some other books. Some of the titles I'm directing people to are Harlem Redux, The Other Side of the Sky, Bittersweet and I Know Who Holds tommorow.

Wow, this is really a nice thread. I can say, as corny as it may sound, that it truly warms may heart to have read the above posts. I hope more people introduce themselves. I’m Troy Johnson; founder of AALBC.com. You may read more about me at http://aalbc.com/bio.htm. Last year I moved back to Harlem about 6 blocks from where I grew up; it took all my time and money but in the end I’m very happy to have been able to move back home.

The only bad thing about running this site is that I very rarely get a chance to enjoy the site myself! I’ve been on the board posting and reading for the last two and a half hours – a luxury I can rarely afford. So instead of working on the site tonight I decided to take a break and check out the discussion boards.

Thanks to all the posters and even you lurkers for contributing to making this board interesting, engaging. and one of the most frequently visited places on AALBC.com

Peace,
Troy

b.t.w. Tee C. never despair about someone taking your ideas. I can’t tell you how much AALBC.com has been plagiarized. I went to a seminar where a 15 page handout was text copy and pasted from my site but attributed to another author! I’m always finding sites both large and small who freely use my original photos without my permission. It is impossible to copy someone’s spirit, motivation and dedication those are the keys to a successful site. It is the people not the technology, money or a handful of stolen ideas.

Hey Troy, what a beautiful statement in your last paragraph...thanks so much. It's what I tell myself all the time, but seeing you say it and knowing that you can relate makes it just as profound. I love what I do and plan to be here for the long run, so I may get a little annoyed at times, but I shake it off and keep moving.

Now...aren't websites a pain in the BUTT? LOL. As hard as it may seem, please try to take you a little break. I'm glad your move back to Harlem went well and I hope to one day visit the NY area (I've never been).

AALBC is awesome and my members even voted it as one of the Top Literary Sites for 2002 (the second year in a row). Kudos to you and your team, I'll always be an admirer of all that you do for the literary community.

Hallo

A message to Carey - all you have to do is to hi-light the text you want to print off, right click it and select "copy". You can then copy it into a Word document (if you have Windows, not sure what you do if you have a Mac) and print it off from that format.

Skeeeeee Weeeee to all the Sorors on the board.

I've posted under JMT on the old board but since I might be having a little girl in a five months I figure I better stop using her initials. So, now I'm just me, Wanda M. Toby. I'm mostly a lurker. I love coming here and keeping up on what's going on. I'm an avid reader first and because of that have become a writer. Right now, I'm working on getting my new book picked up. That's all folks. :-)

Tee, I love Rawsistaz. The website is great and has a lot of good info. You guys reviewed my book. Nice to have you here.

Hi Everyone: My name is Glenda, but my four grandbabies know me as "GG" short for Grandma Glenda. I live in Baltimore,Maryland. It is currently 15 degrees and we are in the middle of a huge snow storm (about 2 feet of snow). I simply love, love, love to read. I will read books, magazines, journals; basically anything with the written word. I just graduated in January (with honors!!!! :-) with my undergrad degree in Health Care Management. I've worked in the field for years (don't want to give away my real age) and after raising two Black Men and putting them through school, I decided to return to get my piece of paper as well. I love this website for both the comments on books that I have read and for the introductions of the new books that everyone else is reading. It is a joy to see that so many Black Folks are reading and enjoying it. I am currently reading and liking Raising Fences, had it for over a year, but those school books came first. Hope everyone is having a great day and I look forward to writing in from time to time. Peace!

Smarti: What a coincidence, I was just looking through past posts to see how that is done. I again was trying to print a small portion of a thread and forgot how it was done but I remembered that Tee had given me a tip in a prior post. Here is how she explained it to me. I'm sure your method works as well and I will see which is best suited for my needs. See I know very little about my computor, I mean when people start talking in that computor jargon I am lost. Really, I don't know if I have Windows or ceilings *smile* or what versions I have of them. Just the other day a friend of mine wrote back and said I needed to upgrade my Outlook Express to a 8.0 version and needless to say I didn't know how to do this. I just recently got rid of a virus on my system that Thump had told me about some time ago. It was the type that attached itself via my outgoing mail. This is Odd I know, but again it took awhile before I could find someone to walk me through it. I basically had to get a Norton program that did most of the work for me. Anyway, this is what Tee said to do. If you highlight the reply that you want, right click, then click on print and when the pre-print page appears select selection. The other choices will be print all and pages, you want the bottom choice which should be "selection". That's it Smarti, thanks for telling me of an alternative way to do this, I will give it a try. Hey, stop in with us more often and share your reading "stories" likes and habits, we love to hear them.

Hello Glenda, thanks for stopping it, WELCOME. There's nothing wrong with lurking, I understand that only a small percentage of those that visit this site actually post but it's always good to hear new voices. It's a little intimidating at first but once you get rolling and people start responding to your posts it becomes great fun. Now don't be huggin' all the hug out of those grandbabies, save some, because sho nough one day down the road they are going to need it *smile*. You have a nice day and keep posting and tell us how your book is going. I don't believe you told us what it's about.

Hey Wanda and Glenda and WELCOME!!

Glenda, I love that GG nickname...that's too cute. Congrats on your graduation!! That is wonderful news.

Hey Wanda and congrats to you!! Is this your first baby? If so, hit me off the boards... :-) Just remind me about the baby as I'm sure I'll forget. <wink> Thanks also for the kudos on the group...it is appreciated.

Carey you know I'm laughing at that "Windows or Ceilings" thing huh? That's too funny. But I'm always around if you have questions. I'm no expert, but I know enough to get by and occasionally help others.

Um. I am soooo late (as usual; I'm Pisces.:-D ), sorry.

Anyway, it just dawned on me that I really never formally introduced myself and have only really popped in and out, not really getting to know more about you interesting people here.

I am "Beautifulwaterstar". I'm an old woman in a young woman's body (24 in Earth years) who is addicted to good books, good music, good food, and helping to uplift her people. I am in Georgia and um.. What was the question again? :p

I really enjoy reading through the posts here and try my best to respond but I can really only pop in and out for now. Anyway, I guess that's about it as far as my intro.
