I have a major problem with this book, the writing was okay, but was culturally incorrect. I am a Puerto Rican and African American women and therefore I know a great deal about both cultures. I do not agree with the way these "Puerto Rican" men were portrayed. Most of the statements made were the cliche Mexican statements. For instance the word "hombre" is not used in our culture the way it is used in theirs, neither is the statement "one nation" since Puerto Rico doesn't consider itself a nation it is a commonwealth and the closest anyone comes to a statement about the land is "Viva la Raza" or "Viva la Isla". i just think that it should be thought about thank you. |

Nadirah(beautiful name): Sorry! It's an abomination; It is irresponsible for a person of color to misrepresent another people of color, especially a person attempting to be literate!

I liked the book too. I didn't expect to though. Because I don't know very many Latino peeps; I didn't recognize that the author had made a boo-boo in her portrayal of the Latino men in the story. I thought it was a good story....I thought that the ending should be a sequel though...too much left undone. |
